The important thing here is that you're right and should continue preaching the same message because it worked so well the last time. And changing tactics wouldn't be a sign of learning something or not being lazy.
Punching Newsom is punching up. Telling voters they are wrong to criticize him in regards to economics, Zionism, LQBTQ rights, and social safety nets IS punching left.
