Hi Lemmy,

I'm in the market for a new phone as my galaxy S10+ that I've had for ~5 years has a dying screen. I haven't really been paying attention to the market in the same number of years, so I"m not sure what to go for and I would really appreciate your recommendations!

Some info:

  • My budget is definitely no more than 700 EUR (preferably under 500, but I'm willing to make concessions)
  • I'm expecting to buy refurbished to save money, so the device need not be from this generation
  • I prioritize:
    • a high quality panel with high refresh rate, could be nice with LTPO
    • Hardware that is at least as capable as the S10+
    • All-day battery life
    • Preferably flat screen

I don't really care about the camera, I'm sure most these days are serviceable for the few pictures I take.

I'm very interested in the Nothing phone 2, but it's just at the edge of my price range so I'm trying to see if I can find something that scratches the same itch, both in specs and form factor (but I'm sure that's too much to ask). Any advice would be appreciated!

I think it's unfortunate that you're being so hostile. It was an interesting point and very good sources that you brought to the discussion. But you've decided to play the "you're all 'autists' " card.

I disagree. The connotation and literal meaning of the phrase "doing better than", combined with the comment on social circles indicates that they're trying to suggest the poor are somehow doing well, whatever that means.

That's how I read it, anyway. And I think that's why they're getting down voted as well.

I think the wording in your original comment is pretty misguided. Nowhere does it say the poor are "doing better than" the wealthy. They just had the strongest short-term wage growth since covid. This does not equate to prosperity. Perhaps it is you that has the restrictive social circle.

Hey there!

I'm a chemical physicist who has been using python (as well as matlab and R) for a lot of different tasks over the last ~10 years, mostly for data analysis but also to automate certain tasks. I am almost completely self-taught, and though I have gotten help and tips from professors throughout the completion of my degrees, I have never really been educated in best practices when it comes to coding.

I have some friends who work as developers but have a similar academic background as I do, and through them I have become painfully aware of how bad my code is. When I write code, it simply needs to do the thing, conventions be damned. I do try to read up on the "right" way to do things, but the holes in my knowledge become pretty apparent pretty quickly.

For example, I have never written a class and I wouldn't know why or where to start (something to do with the init method, right?). I mostly just write functions and scripts that perform the tasks that I need, plus some work with jupyter notebooks from time to time. I only recently got started with git and uploading my projects to github, just as a way to try to teach myself the workflow.

So, I would like to learn to be better. Can anyone recommend good resources for learning programming, but perhaps that are aimed at people who already know a language? It'd be nice to find a guide that assumes you already know more than a beginner. Any help would be appreciated.

If anything it'll be below 100 due to altitude. For example salt water for making pasta boils still at approx 100 deg. C. It takes quite a lot of salt (way more than you would ever want to consume) to meaningfully raise the boiling point.

You must be at altitude. That definitely makes a difference for the boiling point, but of course water freezes at 0. Impurities that you'll encounter in tap water, for example, will not have a large effect on freezing point.

Even if it was different by a few degrees, how does that make the scale any less intuitive?

Quite some years ago I offhandedly recommended a band to a friend, and like a week later she texted me thanking me for the recommendation, and gave me her thoughts. I thought that was really cool of her, because it's all too common that recommendations are ignored. I decided then that I would do my best to actually follow up on recommendations from friends and then try to let them know what I thought. It's a practice that's generally very well received.

I also then decided to be more honest about whether or not I actually will check something out. For example, I don't really listen to podcasts so I'm pretty upfront with people that it's not likely I'll listen to whatever they recommend. I think it's had a ripple effect of generally being more honest in my relationships, which has been transformative. I highly recommend it.

Sometimes I'm astonished by people's inability to put together coherent thoughts. I think it it comes from a complete lack of self awareness, but I'm unsure. Working theory.

This is some really high quality reading and critical thinking. I appreciate your write up as well as your identification of and attention to nuance.

His headshot looks like Jeff playing the dean.

Mental health issues are treated medically all the time. Drugs + therapy are common treatments for nearly all mental health issues. Who's to say that gender dysphoria (not dysmorphia) isn't treated the same?

And if someone wants to physically alter their body to match their preferred gender, what's it to you? Honestly why do you care so much? I can't help but imagine those like you as those codgy people with antiquated ideals, spewing hate and judgement because someone has tattoos or body piercings.

I noticed there was no physics-specific communities (at least that I could find) so I went ahead and made one! My idea is that it'll be a community for all people with an interest in physics to discuss, ask questions, and share knowledge. Come post stuff you find interesting!

You can check us out at one of these two links that may or may not work:

Ahhhh that makes so much sense. I was wondering why some communities with a large number of active users only had like 3 subscribers.

Anyone else notice that you can still access reddit through rif if you're not logged in? I noticed after opening the app out of habit haha. You can even view NSFW content, so I'm not really sure what's going on.
