Mmmm I love a good French toast

[–] dkppunk@piefed.social 2 points 10 hours ago

Last year, I actually had a problem with them getting into the house. They were always heading towards the patio door, but since that door was replaced, I don’t get them inside anymore. Now, when I scoop up a handful of soil in the garden bed and I can find 10-20 pill bugs. There are just so many!

Most of my vegetable gardening is in pots or wheeled raised garden beds, my in ground garden bed is only 3ft x 6ft. At least the issue doesn’t affect all of my plants.

I cut down an old tomatillo plant yesterday, I will stick the dead root ball in my garden for the pill bugs to eat. Hoping that between the diatomaceous earth rings around my plants and mulch/old plant cuttings, I can keep them happy and not eating my plants lol

Such adorably frustrating little cuties!

I feel the same way, I’ve been switching as much as I can to proper left handed tools. Changing to proper left handed scissors made a huge difference, I’m sure a good lefty knife would too.

You are not alone in your frustration!

I actually love invertebrates and I’ve always considered pill bugs very cute. I fully understand how beneficial they are to gardens but O.M.G. they are destroying my plants this year. In 2 months, I’ve lost 5 luffa, 3 hot pepper, and 2 soybean plants to these adorable little fuckers. Thankfully, they are completely ignoring my Roma tomatoes.

I am going to get some diatomaceous earth today to sprinkle at the base of my plants and probably put down some sacrificial plant scraps to lure and feed them away from my vegetables. I don’t want them all to die, but I can’t get my plants to grow when they eat the stems.

Last year, I had an issue with hydrophobic soil, so this year I have put down straw to keep moisture in, which has allowed the pill bugs to run rampant throughout the garden. I do not overwater but I do live in a more arid climate, so things do get dry pretty quick and plants get thirsty. I almost prefer hydrophobic soil at this point.

I’ll be moving the surviving 3 soybeans and 2 pepper plants to a separate raised garden bed that the pill bugs cannot access, but UGH I never thought I’d be so frustrated with these cute guys!

Looking for any additional advice on getting rid of pill bugs/rollie pillow/sow bugs or whatever you want to call them. Such adorable and incredibly frustrating little fuckers!

I don’t have an answer, but as a fellow lefty, I have a lot of empathy for you. Ambidextrous items are still usually built for right handed folks. I’ve been replacing everything I can with left handed items; cooking utensils, really sharp scissors, garden shears, etc. It’s not easy to find everything, but having things built to be used in the left hand is a game changer.

Hope you find a lefty knife! I’ll definitely check out what other folks recommend:)

The bees really love my marigolds :)

My lettuce box was infested with a bunch of aphids. I sprayed them with a mix of mildly soapy water, which killed most of them. Some survived, but the lettuce is for my rabbits, so it’s all going to get eaten soon anyway.

For my bunny greens, I use the mild soapy water method because I don’t want to make my kids sick with other stuff. For other plants that are not for my buns, I use a sprayer with neem oil, which also works on the powdery mildew that gets kind of crazy in my garden.

I commend you for your patience because you have far more than me.

I’ve seen him around for a while and he’s always making the same comments about women. That guy is only going to change when he truly wants to, which does not look likely at this time. Good luck if you decide keep trying.

Hope you have a great day :)

It’s not a cultural thing, it’s a weird manosphere thing. If you read the guy’s comment history, it quickly becomes obvious why he is single and can’t keep a relationship. If you don’t feel like it, which I don’t blame you, I summarized it in a recent comment to him:

I’ve noticed your complaints up and down this thread, I’ve also noticed them around the threadiverse for a while and I am beginning to see a pattern. You tend to be aggressively argumentative, denigrate women as a whole/complain about “woke”, refuse to see things from other people’s perspectives, and don’t listen to anyone’s advice. Have you ever heard the phrase “if everyone around you is an asshole, then maybe you’re the asshole”? Perhaps part of the issue is your behavior and attitude.

I don’t really worry about this because I don’t bring my plants back inside when hardening them. I start seedlings inside under a light. Once they are big enough, I move them outside to a semi sheltered area, usually under the edge of the roof and out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day. When they have a few sets of leaves or the roots start showing at the bottom of the pot, I put them in the ground. After they go into the ground, they are on their own to live or die.

I live in a very mild climate and, with exception to harsh midday sun, I don’t have to harden the seedlings much. Aphids are a serious problem and I don’t want them in my aerogardens inside.

Yeah, I don’t blame you for blocking lol. I don't block much because the threadiverse is pretty small, but I do tag folks often so I can remember things. I have this person tagged for misogyny and I typically ignore folks I have tagged for stuff like that. I decided to reply this time, but it’s pretty obvious why that guy hasn’t been able to hold a relationship for very long. Lots of negativity, complaining about women, and probably has his standards way too high, but oh well 🤷‍♀️

Museums make great dates! As do aquariums and zoos!

Cute little Buttonhook Leafbeetle Jumping Spider that did not want to sit still for a picture. It kept moving around to the other side of the stem when I got close lol

It was super cute 💚

Hi! I have a vagina and I identify as a woman, I am also a working professional in my 40s and I live in an urban area. I love museums and I think they make perfect dates and I often go to the same museums multiple times. The Boston Public Library was beautiful, there is an entire section that is dedicated to art and history. I didn’t see a single thing that you described during my walk through. There was a live taping for the local NPR station at the cafe though, that was pretty cool to watch.

Anyway, you can look for ways to change or stay angry, doesn’t make a difference to me. Either way I hope you have a wonderful day ✌️

I remember that one, it was the first time I heard of this scenario. It really sucks for folks involved, but it is kind of interesting too.

Little cutie that was hanging out on my lemon tree. It kept going to the other side of the leaf when I came around to get a picture lol

This is my bark lynx spider friend. I call her Bump because she looks like a tiny bump on my tomato cage :)
