First-time mothers whose children go through family court care proceedings in England are 21 times more likely to die within 10 years of having their baby compared with other mothers, a new study by UCL researchers finds.

Amy Van Zyl, Chief Executive of the charity Her Circle, added: “Mothers whose children are subject to care proceedings are extremely vulnerable. Many will already have experienced abuse, violence and significant trauma. However, this is often compounded by the experience of navigating the social care and family court system.

“Child removal through the courts or by social services can be profound. This includes grief, stigma, guilt, loss of identity as a parent and, as these findings strikingly underscore, serious and adverse health consequences.

What does that mean? I associate Idaho with bad potatoes, but I think I lack the rest of the context.

Of course public officials should be entitled to family leave! Such a short time though.

Blinded and broken, Sunny the owl becomes another casualty of Russia’s war

Russia sent kamikaze drones to attack the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia in February. They hit buildings and killed several people. One unreported victim of the bombardment was a male long-eared owl, blinded in one eye and found with a badly broken wing. A passerby scooped up the stunned bird, put him in a box and took him to the city of Dnipro.

The owl – nicknamed Sunny – is now recovering in a cosy room belonging to Veronica Konkova. No longer able to fly or hunt, Sunny instead hops around.

Konkova said: “The fracture was so bad his left wing had to be amputated. The vet diagnosed brain trauma. Sunny doesn’t react normally to light.”

You’re right, my math was way off. I shouldn’t reply to posts while on migraine.

With that said, not ever drinking from Starbucks ever again.

I mean, I am relatively ok paid, but $9 would be about 1-1.5 hours of my wage before tax. If I want to live in a both economy and ecology wise manner, I had calculated it to a cup of $4 coffee every two weeks, IF I don’t eat out and instead use frozen home made lunch boxes every work day.

If I can skip a coffee a week and instead donate to a charity or local homeless person of my choice. Or save my money for the LGTBQ+ scouts. That’s way better.

Haven’t had Starbucks in over a year, maybe three, the coffee wasn’t worthwhile of the wait or money and the last time the barista gave me oat milk instead of almond. No faults to the barista, I think the chain stresses them out.

Very beautiful bird, and I am chuckling at its legs. Interesting form.

Too tired to look up the specifics on YouTube now, but several shows have clips there that show what happens during breaks or after. Usually small talk with the interviewee and some banter with the audience.

As I don’t watch the interview part of any show, or don’t watch talk shows that aren’t satire, I usually watch the banter clips from e.g. The Daily Show (there are some great ones with Trevor Noah) or whatever what Seth Meyers show is called.

I can eat sushi, pizza, samosas, kebab (kabobs, döner or shawarmas depending on your frame of reference), gyoza/pot stickers/tortellone/pasteczki (or whatever), noodles/ramen/spaghetti, knödeln/kroppkakor and so on and so on. Leaving lots of cultures unsaid.

I can enjoy music, cringy cultural movies (animated and not), fun cirque sessions (even without animals being endangered), go to festivals for various cultures, enjoin then in our cultures of scouting, mountaineering, hiking and share my love of enjoying nature.

I can drive electric cars, communicate on Internet forums, keep in touch with new friends as well as loved ones across the world.

I would be in a much poorer world without you all.

From last year, as it's too early and hot for it currently.

This picture is so old that image searches turned up even worse resolutions than the one I had on my computer.

The thought struck me that I enjoy hearing seagulls squawking when I am on vacation abroad, preferably close to the sea with a fresh breeze when you open the windows… I can fall asleep to that.

But I absolutely loathe the sound of seagulls that are nesting on house roofs near my home, far from the sea. They are fighting with other birds all the time and won’t stop squawking all night which makes it hard to sleep at times.

So when I am abroad, seagulls are fine. When I’m at home, seagulls are a pest.

Was cleaning up in my picture archive and came across this one. Had to do a reverse image search, as I had completely forgotten what the subject was about. Then I found some relevant articles, here's one:

An 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Japan on March 11, 2011, and this picture was so orderly and serene compared to the other ones from the disaster. Which is probably why I decided to save it.
