On a wizard, on a whale, Anna no, Anna no I don’t wanna be dead again.

Honestly it’s so difficult to get done as it is that they don’t even need to outlaw. It’s virtually unobtainable for most women unless they already have “enough” kids, whatever that means to a specific doctor, or they travel to find a willing doctor.

It took me 8 years to get it done because I’ve never reproduced (childfree by choice). And I’m one of the easier stories. I got it done at 27, in 2015, and while some doctors are more willing now, most aren’t. Especially in conservative areas.

All they have to do is keep making doctors scared to offer proper reproductive care, make it risky and they stop going into that field. You don’t need to make it illegal, just impossible. Rich white people will still be able to choose, so they don’t care.

I had to deal with a whole bunch of people asking me hypothetical questions. What if you regret it? (what if I regret having them?), what about your future partner? (If they are right for me they also don’t want kids, and I don’t plan to get married anyway). What if you change your mind? (I will adopt if that happens. I don’t believe sharing my junk genetics is important, and the chances of issues are high anyway since I’m also broken, and there are plenty of not-infant kids who need homes if I get maternal, but kids under 5 aren’t my jam and probably never will be, and I’m probably too negligent to raise them right anyway). Ultimately they couldn’t argue with my logic but it took years of finding the right doctors getting the right consultations, etc.

Or the very first time you open the bag, the zip seal pulls away from the rest of the bag.

Or the seal doesn’t line up properly and can’t be zippered no matter what you do.

Or the seal is one of those cheap single layer ones that cross-threads and pops back open every time you think you’ve got it.

Or the zip opening doesn’t cover the whole bag, and you, moron you are, cut the top instead of the disturbing mouth hole they want you to use.

I end up clipping them half the time anyway.. good thing large packs of wood clothes pins are still commonly available at the dollar store :)

This would absolutely flag me for something. I tend to have flat delivery, low pitch, avoid eye contact, etc. and when combined with other metrics, could easily flag me as not being a happy enough camper.

I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m never going to be happy to be working, but if I showed up that day, I’m also in a good enough headspace to do my job… and if you want to fire me for that… for having stuff going on and not faking vocal patterns…

This is why I don’t want to work anymore. It’s gotten so invasive and fraught if you happen to be anything but a happy bubbly neurotypical fake. And that’s wildly stressful. I’m not a machine, and refuse to be treated like one. If that means I have to die in poverty, well, dump me in the woods, I guess.

This shit should never be legal.

I don’t have friends and still got Covid…

I definitely did something wrong (it was “being employed”)

If something like this actually works as designed, I’d like to see companies start to offer it free to employees, in much the same way a lot of them pay for financial planning services as part of the bennies.

With the amount of data brokers can have on people, and the sheer number of brokers, I could see something like this being a valuable component of a good enterprise security team. Help prevent social engineering breaches.

It would also disrupt the data brokerage model, and that’s a win.

Am I the only one surprised there were even that many in the first place?

[-] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 63 points 9 months ago

I just say “it’s personal, and I won’t be discussing it.” If they don’t want to hire me because of it, I don’t want to work there anyway.

It’s absolutely none of their business what I was doing, especially that I went into a deep depression after my mom died and my live-in ex cheated on me while I was caring for her, and then spent a couple years selling her non-sentimental possessions to live off. And I’m not willing to make up some bullshit to hide it either, it happened and I’m not ashamed of it, but I’m not sharing it with interviewers. Meh meh.

[-] ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com 68 points 9 months ago

You joke, but really, it probably is exactly that. They want desperate people who won’t complain about being treated poorly.

Even the used furniture market is obscene.

Used flat pack shit that lasts maybe 10 years in optimal conditions goes used for only half the price, bad lean and all.

Anything solid wood you might as well buy new, cuz it’s nearly the same price, like damn.

I now go to habitat for humanity restore locations or goodwill, because they -can’t afford to charge a lot for big stuff- because they don’t have the space to store it. It’s not great stuff, but refurbishable.

I checked for posts about this and didn’t see any. Hopefully the cross post works properly.

Since yesterdays Sarah Eisenlohr post was popular here's another....

I also found an article which is an interesting read

'.....Since I’m very methodical before I paste everything together, some pieces can take take a year to complete, while others fall into place in a couple of minutes....'

Her website and online shop for prints

If Donald Trump goes to prison, he would likely go to a federal prison. Conjugal visits are not a federal right, so Trump would not enjoy conjugal visits with Melania.

She wouldn’t enjoy them either.

I went digging through settings (always do) and couldn’t find an option to show the instance of commenters.

It’s very helpful to me to have that information. The app I was using, memmy, had it, and I really like the context it provides for users of niche instances, but memmy doesn’t support direct messages and doesn’t handle images well, so it was time for a change. (Of literally all available iOS apps and the couple PWAs I tested, Thunder seems to handle hexbear/other inline images best at the moment - well done!)

Is there a way to enable that? If not, I’d like to request it 😁

Why does it always have to be the consumer’s job to watch out for this crap? It’s exhausting going through everything looking for allergens, imagine doing so just to make sure the product you’ve been buying for years hasn’t changed to lower quality without warning.

Better solution - require that products have a front label stating their recipe has changed, and including a list of changes to it on the back. Quicker reference, easy as hell to tell when something changed.

Consumer protection really needs to be more robust. We shouldn’t let these companies have all the power to mess with our bodies on a whim without warning.

Contact management (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 10 months ago by ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/foss@beehaw.org

I am looking for a contact manager to replace a google account or iCloud account.

I am currently on iOS (and actively dislike it after being on android since forever) and looking to increase my privacy by cutting ties with my google accounts.

A Google account presently manages my contacts, and I do not want iOS to take over this job, I’d rather manage them myself.

I tried searching for FOSS contact managers but all I found was client relation software which isn’t what I want at all…. I don’t think.. I just want my phone numbers and names saved for easy personal use.

Is there anything good for managing a personal phone book?

I was using memmy because it used the default option for voting breakdown to show up and downvotes separately.

I would like to see all apps add a toggle for those of us who want a granular breakdown on voting (the same suggestion has been made to memmy and will be made to any others I try which don’t have it, and I’m on android as well!), for our mental health or for whatever other reason (for me the total vote count up/down is a mental health feature, and why I’m drawn to the fediverse. I want to know my overall reach and how many agreed, disagreed, and, inadvertently, the vote to reply ratio (which tells you a lot about how strongly someone feels about their agreement or dissent). I don’t want that hidden behind an aggregate number when it exists there as data already that need to be suppressed.

I have downloaded and installed your app and have found it does not have this, so I would like to request it. It can be a toggle for those who want to know aggregate data, but it is my opinion that the default splitting of votes into up and down counts should be preserved as the default for apps as well, largely for the reasons above but also to give Lemmy a different feel from Reddit/other SM. We want this place to be different, and our UX choices matter in how that ends up working. If we want to maintain a more collaborative environment, the detailed counts do matter.

Plug-in for requests (lemmy.dbzer0.com)
submitted 11 months ago by ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com to c/plex@lemmy.ml

I am looking for a plug-in for media requests from users.

My users suck, and won’t tell me if I’m missing stuff they want, or my copies are bad (with a few very helpful exceptions) so I’m looking for some sort of integration that like tells me what they are looking for, or makes it easy for them to ping me a suggestion to add/fix. I don’t watch most of my library, so this is a big concern.

Most of my users don’t know my number or email because they are my partner’s friends and I don’t use the email address my server is tied to, for security (nor are messages usually passed to me on the rare occasion they are sent to him). So “have them text you” isn’t really a good option, and it’s enough of a struggle to get them to use it in the first place that adding another standalone app isn’t going to do it either.

Preferably I would like something my end users don’t have to do anything to access, maybe a few button presses in their search interface? Like “search returns no results, request this content” as a button maybe?

Does anything like that exist?
