Buy a home. The paperwork costs a % of the home's value. It's the same paperwork whether you buy a 2 million dollar home or $200k home. It is not a insubstantial sum. Plus you you tip your realtor a % of the sale value. Absolute scam.

Yeah... I wouldn't recommend shooting at a metal object from a few feet away.

Also, I know it was a different era, but if I saw someone shooting an inanimate out of anger today, I would assume that person belongs to a certain cult.

I never liked avocado or guacamole until I vacationed in Mexico. A freshly ripened avocado is significantly tastier than what you'll find in the average grocery store.

...I still don't like fish.

I'm not even sure if you guys are real. And Lemmy is pretty obscure.

The crate is the dog's safe space, not a punishment. If I need my dog to be in her crate, I reward her when she goes inside.

There are also hand motions to go with common commands like 'sit'. I've found this makes it easier for a dog to understand me.

I think I've seen this episode of Stranger Things. Don't let that thing reach maturity.

You could always start by teaching English in another country. I recall that it pays quite well and is in demand in many countries. The requirements are also very low.

As for learning another language. You get better at it when you're around it constantly.

Oh no, you couldn't possibly take out all of the AI data centers. That would be so awful for the shareholders.

US military spending is already ~40% of global military spending, which is an insane number. Halving that budget could fix so many problems.

I was just discussing how bad sensors are on any vehicle. Automatic lane steering is scary to use and does not feel like an actual driver even when it is working. Those sensors that alert you of something being to close go off randomly at street lights all the time. Factor in weather, faded lines, missing speed limit signs, dirt, and a million edge cases, and there is no way a vehicle can safely be trusted to drive itself.

So many consumers aren't aware of these risks. More so, the people taking these risk aren't just putting their own lives in danger. FSD needs to be illegal.

Most of them are probably 18 years old, poorly educated, and raised on Fox News. They're just pawns that have no idea what's going on.

Congress on the other hand, knows exactly what they're doing, and has no moral qualms.

Pretty sure that kid's arm would hang down to his ankle if he straightened it. Must be all those atomic wafers.

Warranty? (lemmy.world)
submitted 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by AlternatePersonMan@lemmy.world to c/electricvehicles@slrpnk.net

My wife just bought an Ioniq 5 with 20k miles. It still has 2+ years on the factory warranty and the battery is warrantied until 100k.

I didn't realize that she had purchased an 8 year/100k bumper to bumper warranty for $3,500. That seems crazy expensive and redundant to me.

I can still get a refund if I hurry.

We have never had an ICE vehicle this would have paid off on. However this is our first EV. Are there any unusual things that might break that I'm not aware of? The sales guy just kept mentioning sensors and electronics, which seemed like a classic scare tactic.

Update: Warranty cancelled. Thanks for the input.

Tldr: I need a new heated vest/jacket (and accessories). Got any recommendation?

My Milwaukee electric hoodie recently died. I liked it for the warmth under my jacket, but I never loved it because it didn't get that hot. Just kind of warmish. I can always swap batteries.

I live in a climate that often drops to sub zero (F) temps, and I'm often outside for multiple hours. I have a nice parka and a puffy jacket. But electric heat feels so great beneath.

I want some new heated gear. Primarily a hoodie or vest, but a good jacket, gloves, socks, etc., could be nice too.

Ideas?

Found this on game pass (which I keep meaning to cancel, but here we are). Holy. Shit.

It's a cute little cell shaded board style game. Might be fun to toy around with... Maybe just a couple more tries...wait what...?

It's a masterpiece. It's genius. It's madness. It's like Myst shot up the 7th guest and started snorting riddles.

Did anyone else stumble into this labyrinth? I'm obsessed.

Strava Alternative? (lemmy.world)
submitted 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) by AlternatePersonMan@lemmy.world to c/bicycling@lemmy.world

Strava's enshitification continues. It's basically useless now without an expensive subscription. I mountain bike. All I want is to track my lap time, segment time, and compare against personal records.

I tried MapMyRide today, which pretty much just tracked my lap time. Not ideal.

Are there any decent alternatives?

Thanks in advance.

** Thanks for all the suggestions. I've got some research to do. Fingers crossed. **

From my perspective, the traditional way to acquire content from torrents and a VPN.

Everyone is talking about Superbox, which actually sounds pretty cool. How does it work? What's the catch? Can I setup another device to use the same apps without buying the box? If it gets shut down can I fire it up through a VPN?

I'm guessing they host content from another country and sell the hardware at a big profit. But I'd love to know a little more. There are hosting costs somewhere... Is the profit model just to outrun those costs through hardware sales?

Not so much looking to build a PC as buy one, because I'm lazy these days. My old one is forever old and filled with randomly upgraded parts and HDDs. I've also got an old and under performing NAS for Plex. Looking to turn my current PC into my new NAS, and buy a mini PC for my new rig. (I don't game on PC anymore).

The problem is, I want one(ish) large capacity drive on the mini PC. Not 100% tied to a mini PC, just like the idea of being minimalist on this rig.

Any suggestions? 2 monitors. Not much else special.

Maybe an external drive? Or drive bay? Speed isn't critical on the large capacity.

Thoughts?

I bought some hockey sticks recently. Free shipping over $300. UPS made me pay $50 on delivery for "Duties or taxes are due on this package." The seller did not list the potential expenses outside of what was paid, and said they have no control over this.

Has anyone else run into this (with anything)?

I have never paid duties as a direct fee for anything not purchased in an airport. Shipping was Canada to U.S.

This is a sidewalk grip where it ramps up from the street. I noticed that all of them have the same melt pattern. Low traffic area when no one was out.

Just curious if anyone knows why

I have a Naga Hex 2, which I really like. It recently lost sensitivity to horizontal movement. If I move the mouse slowly, the cursor doesn't move. Moving the mouse fairly quickly, however works fine. Vertically it works as expected as well. I've had something similar happen to other mice in the past (different computers, etc.)

Is this common? Is the mouse broken? Has this happened to anyone else?

I can't think of the words to bring back an answer in a search engine.

I'm going to have a party with multiple headsets running, each with a stream so people can view, and I can easily help new players.

I used to be able to begin a stream from the Quest app by clicking cast and selecting the device- Chromecast in my case. Once the connection was established, my phone was no longer necessary.

Easy.

Now. As far as I know, I can either:

  1. Stream to my phone and cast a mirror. I hate that, because private phone stuff, I can't turn off my phone, or use it for phone stuff.
  2. Stream to a PC: Make the request from the headset. Access the headset from a browser. Connect that to a TV.

Option 2 would be fine, except neither option has been stable for me. There is almost always a disconnection within 30 minutes.

Is there a better option? A way to increase stability?

Thanks!

My havit KB395L died. It was cheapish, but great for me. I should have bought 3, because they don't make it anymore.

I bought a Red Dragon Horus (k618rgp-pro) with red switches as a replacement. The form factor is fine, and I like the wireless, but the keys feel mushy and I make typos constantly.

So, now I'm looking for something with:

  • Low Profile
  • Blue switches
  • Tactile (feel the bump on a key press)
  • Full size (I guess I could go ten keyless)
  • Backlight Bonus features:
  • Wireless
  • Hot swappable switches

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

How can I easily make a live USB drive that is persistent? My goal is to boot it through the boot menu (not grub). And just reboot to Windows for the few things I need on my laptop. I would prefer if my laptop had no trace of Linux installed. I found a guide, but it looked endless and needlessly complicated. Does anyone have a premade process? I'm not attached to any distro.

Any help is much appreciated.

Background: Every couple of years I get fed up with windows and give Linux another try. I love the idea behind it, the stability and... Inevitably I find something that won't run, then get fed up. I no longer have the energy for Wine or running more than a command or two. I want the idiot experience.

Recently, I put together a live USB of Mint. It did most of what I need, but I didn't want to deal with grub or partitions. Errors there suuuuck. So, I figured a persistent USB version would be great. From what I read, you can just install like normal, only to the USB drive. Of course I accidentally installed grub and nearly gave myself a heart attack when I couldn't get to the boot menu. (Had to put the USB drive back in). The Linux install didn't work either- not sure why. So, now I'm back to hating Microsoft's increasing ads and data tracking, wishing Linux was just a little simpler.
