A secret social media influence campaign that attempted to lobby US lawmakers to support Israel’s war on Gaza was organized and funded by the Israeli government, The New York Times reports.

According to the Times, Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs earmarked around $2 million for the campaign, which used hundreds of fake accounts impersonating made up people to target US lawmakers. The accounts posed as Americans and posted pro-Israel messages, calling on members of congress to fund Israeli military operations. The campaigns used OpenAI’s ChatGPT to produce the posts and targeted several Black Democrats, like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

If we wait a couple days, Hakeem Jeffries will explain to us while this organization lobbying on behalf of a foreign government doesn't need to register as an actor of a foreign government...

He just has to finish counting all the money he got from Israel last cycle (more than any other US politicians btw)

It's bad when republicans do it.

It's bad when Dems do it.

We need at least one party to have standards or we're all fucked.

This article just says Jeffries was targeted. Idk his history other than you saying he has received the most Israel money previously, but this particular article doesn't even suggest that it was effective campaign, just that it was targeted.

I vividly recall an article with this exact info more than a month ago. Probably a lot more. Strange how everyone is now quotes an NYT story that released today but basically says the same.

Edit: I think this was it. March 2024 - Israeli Influence Operation Targets U.S. Lawmakers on Hamas-UNRWA

This Verge/NYT article is leaving out the critical UNRWA = Hamas propaganda being spread by those israeli bots. Unless this is referring to a different occurence.

DUH! Every time I see one of these corrupt foreign power tries to influence our low IQ lawmakers I wonder if anyone thinks this is somehow different than its always been.

Why use fake social media accounts when there's AIPAC money to be handed out?

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A secret social media influence campaign that attempted to lobby US lawmakers to support Israel’s war on Gaza was organized and funded by the Israeli government, The New York Times reports.

According to the Times, Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs earmarked around $2 million for the campaign, which used hundreds of fake accounts impersonating made up people to target US lawmakers.

The campaigns used OpenAI’s ChatGPT to produce the posts and targeted several Black Democrats, like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Meta noted that the campaign’s accounts impersonated local Jewish students, African Americans, and “concerned” citizens and left messages on the pages of legitimate news organizations and public figures.

The topics of the comments included campus antisemitism, calls to release hostages taken during Hamas’ October 7th attack, and anti-Islam material.

Like the war in Ukraine, social media has become a proxy battleground since October 7th, where Israelis and Palestinians have tried to garner support from digital bystanders.

The original article contains 413 words, the summary contains 157 words. Saved 62%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
