Reminded me of an old Reddit post (the old database is still useful to search for) showing Gandalf's true nature. Dude wasn't a wizard, he was a multiclass fighter with an 18 in INT.

Was about to post it. Always wanted to actually make that character, but all my friends moved off of 3.5 before I got a chance.

They killed eachother though. So he had to run all the way back to loot.

You really think any of them were high enough level to take on that Balrog? He was looking out for them! No group XP in LotR, otherwise Gandalf could have spent a few days powerleveling them beforehand.

Also they were on similar level, Gandalf and the balrog, it's a boss enemy he'd be on fairly equal footing if he was allowed to be his full divine abilities. The rest may have been able to take it on if they were willing to die, since I believe that's the only way that balrogs were killed in the past by great elf warriors.

No rezzes in LotR (unless you're a Maia like Gandalf), so definitely not worth it. The quest was too important!

Technically the elves can come back, they usually just don't want to.

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'm fairly sure that this is technically true, but basically only because Tolkien accidentally named two different characters Glorfindel and decided to explain it away.

My favorite is how Fëanor was such a shitty little kid that his mom asked the gods to invent death so she could get some sleep.

[–] stonerboner@lemmynsfw.com 18 points 2 years ago

To be fair he did solo the boss, so he deserves the experience and loot.

Gandalf is OG dungeon carry.

If the Dwarves hadn't dug too deep, Gandolf would never have become The White. You're welcome, Middle Earth.

And he got the crazy expensive white dye to show off!

[–] dovahking@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Well it was a hidden boss. So, of course, the reward would be something exceptional.

[–] model_tar_gz@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Tell me more about this white “dye”.

[–] oce@jlai.lu 1 points 2 years ago

You need to farm for a life time to afford it.

[–] exocrinous@startrek.website 1 points 2 years ago

You can craft it from bone meal

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Like kicking people out of the instance just before the loot drops

[–] halvar@lemm.ee 6 points 2 years ago

What an asshole

[–] guyrocket@kbin.social 4 points 2 years ago

Dammit, Gandalf!
