CW: Transphobia, ableism, misgendering

I've posted a video from Nicco Loves Linux covering the whole situation to the libre community here for context.

TL;DR: Vaxry, the lead developer of the popular Hyprland wayland compositor and tiling window manager has been banned from ever contributing a patch to freedesktop, a highly influential software group that is responsible for the modern Linux Desktop. This was due to him violating freedesktop's code of conduct because of his toxic discord community and crypto-fash blog. Vaxry then writes two screeds and throws a public temper tantrum, leading to inevitable clash when his nazi friends harass the freedesktop people.

(EDIT: Removed direct links to blog, the entire blog is pretty reactionary outside of the purely software related posts) The blog posts that got them banned:

What if instead of a leftist woman banning me for being a neonazi it was a young leftist woman getting banned by a Christian org?

You mean... Something that happened every single day for the last 1000 years, and we had no recourse or any platform from which to complain about it? And instead of asking us to not submit code, they tortured us to death for it?

the wise man bowed his head solemnly and spoke: "theres actually zero difference between good & bad things. you imbecile. you fucking moron"

I just love it when Vaxry's gotcha moment is when he accepts a merge request from a trans contributor to prove he's not transphobic, never questioning why a trans person in his community would feel unsafe doing so.

All the comments saying he's a little bitty baby and he doesn't know any better can go to the gulag

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 68 points 1 year ago (2 children)

By the way I'm infinitely grateful for hexbear being such a great site to be trans in. Every single other thread about this topic has some chud whining about muh free speech and making up conspiracies.

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 28 points 1 year ago

Transphobes fuck off meow-knife-trans

[–] someone@hexbear.net 25 points 1 year ago

As a cis man, I've found hexbear to be an incredible resource on how to be a better ally to a close relative who is trans.

As someone who's been exclusively Linux-at-home for about a quarter-century, I am constantly disappointed in the chuds who infest the various subcultures in the broader Linux community. Trying to explain basic fucking empathy to these people is an uphill battle. Honestly it's made me leery of contributing code to established projects. Instead I just do small from-scratch projects for myself. At least then I know the project founder isn't a bigot.

Trans software devs should be allowed to, like, kill the cis ones. trans-gun

[–] highalectical@lemmygrad.ml 31 points 1 year ago

My favorite part of this saga is the chud dev trying to pass off the fact that there is no objective morality as an excuse for his behavior.

[–] HumanBehaviorByBjork@hexbear.net 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

they're such snide little removed jesus fucking christ "um mind explaining to the class why you said it's okay to bully transphobes?? but i'm not trying to start a hate campaign or anything, tee hee, but if anyone's interested and motivated to dig through a trans woman's social media for things to get mad at please be my guest." shut the fuck up and pull the trigger you worthless shithead.

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Vaxry pulling up a trans person social media page on his blog to complain about her transness while also being put on blast for transphobia to subsequently being banned i-love-not-thinking

I don't even mind the people who agree with Vaxry (because they are all transphobic neckbeard shitheads who have never talked to a trans person in real life) but the liberals who play the civility game and say that the trans person and the crypto-fash antisocial creep are both bad because one of them used their company email. madeline-angry

Oh neat I just learned about how shit the hyprland guy is.

Glad I opted for swayfx instead.

[–] polskilumalo@lemmygrad.ml 28 points 1 year ago

Btw, there is nothing more infuriating to chuds in FOSS than forking their code and telling them to fuck off lol

They love Free Software until they don't lmao

r/Linux when you don't use le based difficult distributions only for enlightened geniouses: 😡😡😡

Im related to one of the original developers of redhat

[–] PoisonIvy@lemmygrad.ml 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Never bothered with hyprland, it always seemed like one of those things chan bros would hoot and holler about for some reason while sway/swayfx works just fine…looks like my intuition wasn’t far off the mark.

[–] reddit@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Recently had the opportunity to set up a new system from basically scratch and tried a few different wayland options, assuming I'd land on hyprland since it seemed to be the most beloved, but then I finished configuring sway and realized it was basically perfect. Might try swayfx at some point but I really don't understand how hyprland got so much of a following

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hyprland has this annoying thing where they track the latest git commit of wlroots so orgs like debian and fedora can't package it.

Sticking to things like Sway and River is better in the long run since they update alongside wlroots.

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I don't understand. Why is it wrong to use hyprland? The dev doesn't get any money or anything like that right.

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Vaxry is synonymous with Hyprland for the most part. He has a large community who looks up to him as well as he has a very high opinion of himself (contrary to what he says). His GitHub states he is the leader.

People refusing to work with him/use his passion project might get the message of "dont be a loser bigot" through.

Or it isolates his community and quarantines it away from the non bigot infested FOSS world.

Nobody cares if you use hyprland (people will package it anyways, it's technically impressive), but in the FOSS space we can curate what software we use (down to the very kernel). Bad actors who don't respond to criticism have to face consequences somehow and refusing to use hyprland is an example of that.

I mean being banned from freedesktop has ruined a big part of his career. He will always be known as the chud debate bro who tried to bargin with social norms. Who wants to work with someone whose judgement they can't trust?

[–] itappearsthat@hexbear.net 7 points 1 year ago

The currency of the FOSS world is prestige and the respect of your peers

[–] Civility@hexbear.net 18 points 1 year ago
[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago

oh Vaxry is from poland-cool? That both explains a lot and causes me to discard the rest of these blog posts as trash

[–] forgotmylastusername@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

r/linux has been suspect for a long time.

Years ago I noticed they had the sub set to auto remove posts on as low as a couple of user reports. I don't know if it's still that set up that way. I bailed on that place a long time ago.

People seemed to be intentionally abusing that to shadow moderate the subreddit. They seemed to be primarily targeting posts and comments with anything related to China or Chinese origin authors/topics. Maybe even any topics or authors of east Asia all together? I never pieced together a clearer picture.

It was obvious there was unusual behavior going on with certain types of posts getting [removed]. The one topic they didn't touch was when the Asian American college student was doing a research study about submitting patches to the Linux kernel. The whole sub was having a meltdown over it even though what they did was superfluous changes and they had done so under the approval of the university.

I tried myself to fuck with it a bit getting some posts removed by reporting from a couple of accounts. The mods almost immediately reinstated the posts.

You really shouldn't bite the hand that fixes your kernel, get fucked

All the cool trans people are in wayland, it's just the one crypto-fash chud who wants to make this space unsafe. Compositors are implementations of wayland protocols and this chud got banned from ever contributing to wayland and the linux desktop outside of his compositor.

Wayland vs. X11 is linux debatebro nonsense.

every time i hear some new Linux drama, i'm kinda glad i'm too dumb to use it 🤷🏼
