However, let’s face it, Valve isn’t about to just let Microsoft run a GamePass app on SteamOS either.

SteamOS is Linux (Arch). If Microsoft wanted to put GamePass on Linux, there's no reason it wouldn't run on a SteamDeck. Valve isn't trying to create the same sort of "walled garden" which you get with other consoles. I have several games loaded up on my SteamDeck which aren't from Steam. And I can even add them to the Steam interface. Microsoft software not running on the SteamDeck is entirely Microsoft's choice.

Yeah, in the Steam Deck interview with ign they even mentioned how Steam Deck can play games from other stores mentioning even Epic. Any absence or ease of use issues is due to the other companies not bothering to support Linux themselves and requiring the community to figure things out with an example being heroic launcher.

Basically the writer is an idiot. As Valve has said repeatedly it's a PC... Embarrassing prompt from a site with pcgame in it.

Yeah, I see absolutely no reason for Valve to restrict that. In fact, I may even try out GamePass if it worked on Linux.

It kind of does, at least its xCloud part.

That's cool, but I'm really not interested in cloud gaming. Thanks though!

Nope, but they definitely won’t do it, as much as I wish they would.

I haven't had an xbox since 360. But the UX was terrible then and I've heard and experienced complaints from this generation. How about an actual good UX? Steam deck isn't bad.

How dare you talk about Blades like that. You take that back. Blades was beautiful.

[-] yukichigai@kbin.social 5 points 7 months ago

Blades my beloved.

Never forget what they took from us.

The early XBox UI was great. Then Microsoft decided that what you really needed to see when you fired up your console was ads. Also some horrible Mii clone. Because the Switch was popular. It went downhill like a body over a cliff from there.

[-] MurrayL@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Xbox UI has been a bit all over the place on Series S/X (and XB1, which shares most of the same design).

It's not terrible by any means, but it can be unintuitive at times and the updates to improve things tend to be 'two steps forwards, one step back'.

[-] Donjuanme@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

Xbox s is the only console (wait I have a switch too?) I've had plugged into my TV in the last decade, I'm not suffering the UI it could be improved in places, but it's not bad.

[-] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world -1 points 7 months ago

I don't know if you mean the One S or the Series S. But either way, I've had every Playstation and Xbox generation. The Xbox UI is atrocious.

[-] Donjuanme@lemmy.world -2 points 7 months ago

Whatever the most recent one is, without an optical drive. It was a present from my wife and I can't keep up with them sadly. It's the first console with a UI (besides the switch) that I've had, and it really does work for what I use it for (access to games via gamepass whenever I have an hour or two)

Oooh me too! Having an ROG Ally has made me realize how good Windows 8’s metro layout would’ve been if tablets had become a bigger part of the market. As a PC user I’m not lost using it by any means but there’s a LOT of room for improvement.

Bring back Windows Phone in the form of an Xbox Phone. Would love a third option to Android/iOS.

If it had a slide out controller on it like the old slide out keyboard phones I would buy this instantly.

I have an LG Wing right now and I love it, but I keep wishing that I could use the bottom screen as a touch controller for games on the top screen. SoftWing exists and kinda does that, but not elegantly. If I could swap it for a low profile slide out controller for landscape mode instead, that phone would be a gamers paradise. Probably sell like hotcakes especially in places like Asia where phone gaming is way bigger than here in the US.

[-] Cort@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

I think the problem with slide out controllers is the analog sticks, since they're so tall. PSP and the PSP phone had fairly terrible analog sticks that were flat and low profile, and they SUCKED. They could be recessed in a little well but then they can't move as far, or have tiny uncomfortable thumb pads. You could make do with only d-pad and a couple face buttons, but at that point you might as well get an 8bitdo keychain controller.

[-] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

The 3DS circle pad is low profile enough to work. Some GPD devices have recessed analog sticks that are probably too tall, but also work okay.

Interestingly, if you remove the nub on the New 3DS C Stick and affix the old PSP stick cap onto it, the usability goes way up and it acts more like a pressure sensitive stick.

The touchpads on Steam Decks also would work well.

If the phone was slightly thicker because it had a built in controller, that would not deter me feom buying it, at all. The LG Wing I currently have is almost 0.3" thick, and I think ots still quite slim.

Fucking please. And I know MS quality isn't great, but I absolutely hate everything Google and Apple have been doing lately

[-] Eggyhead@kbin.run 3 points 7 months ago

I mean, if you think MS is not going to do the exact same stuff...

[-] rdri@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Ask Valve to open source Steam client UI. Create your own thing as you want it to function, let users use it if they want. Should be easy enough for Microsoft.

[-] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago

Called it months ago and was told it was ridiculous 🤷
