Do you ever think about how it's called dusting instead of de-dusting?

[-] redtea@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 10 months ago

I didn't but now I'm going to stumble over that phrase for the rest of my life as my mouth says it the right way and my brain tells me it's wrong.

Unless… @simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml when you dust, do you dust or do you dust? That could explain things.

[-] simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 10 months ago

You mean I'm not supposed to be spreading it with a flour sifter?

That explains a lot, honestly.

You need to lick it all up

We invested in a roomba-style robot that has actually been fantastic. Less for the "I am lazy and don't want to hoover my flat" and more for its ability to reach places I can't easily. Keeps under the sofa/bed/etc pretty tidy. Also change the A/C filter regularly never hurts.

When's the last time that you changed your furnace filter?

If you don't have access to that, you tape a filter to a box fan to purify the air. Or go for broke and get a dyson filter / heater.

Also take a moist cloth and wipe down everything once a week, then sweep/mop your floor.

to add to this, do you live near a construction site or a busy street? This can greatly increase the level of dust. if not, get fresh air circulating through windows if possible and avoid lighting candles or smoking inside.

I vacuumed under the bed this week. Highly recommend it but maybe close your eyes so you don't see how much dust is actually under there!

[-] simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 10 months ago

I just vacuumed my ceiling fan so I'm in the same boat!

[-] felhfeltetel@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 10 months ago

Why would you want to cool your ceiling? /s

[-] huf@hexbear.net 4 points 10 months ago

the wood flooring under it did soak up some of the juices... never did get that stain out.

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 10 months ago

no way, you must've got accostumed to the smell lmao.

[-] huf@hexbear.net 3 points 10 months ago

i could smell the other rotting mouse (this was at another time) that was hidden under the kitchen furniture, behind the skirting. i could smell that super well. took me two weeks of tearing my hair to find it though.

this one was on the floor under my bed, directly below where i put my head. the bed has an open bottom, so nothing to prevent airflow.

i really dont know.

[-] voight@hexbear.net 2 points 10 months ago

I'm going to have to make sure I root around underneath the cabinets and whatnot now

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 10 months ago

dust is my worst enemy fr

[-] medium_adult_son@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago

When my hvac broke and was replaced they put in a 4 inch wide filter box, instead of the 1 inch it was before. They said it allowed 5-10x the amount of air to go through and that seems true. Airflow from the vents is way better and I've noticed less dust, plus the filter doesn't have to be changed as often.

Removing and adding the sheet metal on the intake for the furnace filter isn't easy, but in case you have the skills or know someone that does it made a huge difference. Or build one of those box fan filters, if you look up Corsi-Rosenthal box you'll find instructions online.

Do you live in the southwest in 1930? If so: might have something to do with the dustbowl.
