Shout out to various mom groups that organized, canvassed and door knocked for Gina, all in hopes of saving the Texas public education from the christo-fascist legislators who have been gutting the funding and changing the curriculum to indoctrinate the kids with their religious believes.

As a liberal in Texas, FUUUUUUUCK YEAH.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 63 points 2 days ago (2 children)

As a left-wing Okie, I'm proud of y'all.

The fact that it's a quarter to 11 and the AP only just called the race for Mazzei gives me some hope for '28 and '30 and maybe even '32. Every county in Oklahoma voted for Trump in '24. This was a state Trump won by 34 points.

Maybe the turd receptacles who keep voting to keep this place a total shit hole will mostly be dead in 10 years, and those of us who care about bettering the places where we live instead of abandoning them can actually get some work done.

I think this changes everything.

Texas has been a non-voting State for decades. This shows what is possible, and that scares Republicans.

Good. I hope they're terrified.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Texas has never been that red. The GOP first took over the state legislature in 2003 riding Bush's 9/11 bump.

And the first thing they did was a mid-decade gerrymander, and the Dems tried fleeing the state to prevent quorum. Sound familiar?

And it was way worse than what they did last year. Between the 2002 and 2004 elections, Texas's US House delegation went from majority Democrat to 2/3 Republican with about the same number of voters for either party.

Then they started rolling out voter suppression schemes and catering to out-of-state Republicans. They imported a conservative base.

Talarico just put all these down ballot mostly unknown and extremely underfunded candidates on his shoulders and shit stomped the Republican party. If he isn't the next Dem nominee for president I'll eat my cowboy hat.

[–] Fribbizz@feddit.org 12 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Honestly, I don't think I'd want to see him as the presidential candidate next. He's very young and after being president you are mostly spent as a politician. Look at Obama. He could have had a longer productive career if he hadn't been president as early as he was. Talarico I'd hope to see for two or three full cycles as a Senator. If he's then elected president he'd still be young, but more experienced.

Look at Obama. He could have had a longer productive career if he hadn't been president as early as he was.

At the same time you constantly hear Amercans complaining that their politicians are too old and too out of touch.

It's also not worth giving up an incumbent Texas Senate seat as a Democrat.

I loved the way El-Sayed spoke and addresses people, I think a 2028 Run would be too soon, but let's check back in 2032

It'll be an uphill battle for her against the state house and senate.

That was a pleasant surprise as well.

[–] booly@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Plus the incoming Lieutenant Governor is a Democrat. And in the Texas governmental system, the Lieutenant Governor has a ton of power over the Senate, akin to the Senate Majority Leader in most other American systems: ability to set committee memberships, control the calendar, etc.

[–] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 127 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Wow, didn't imagine Texas would get rid of Abbott too - incredible.

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago (6 children)

I'm waiting to see Dan Patrick and the rest admit defeat as well. The fact that he called it without a fight is insane

[–] CMDR_Horn@lemmy.world 42 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You expect him to stand up and fight like a man?

[–] sudo@lemmy.today 30 points 2 days ago (3 children)

You know people fucking hate Abbott when a sexist and ableist joke gets up voted here

Throwing off both Abbott and Paxton feels like finally getting the test results and finding out your gonorrhea has cleared.

[–] rindo25@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Now we need the next election cycle to oust Cruz

I kept saying that there will be flips that nobody was expecting, and this is one of them.

Texas has been edging us over its flirtation with democrats. I never expected the truck to hit the pole either

Fucking incredible!!! I had really lost faith in the purple Texas that felt just below the surface for so long. I left last year and was feeling guilty that my blue vote today was going to a solidly blue California instead of fighting the good fight in Texas, but they fucking did it. I'm thrilled.

It's a bright day in Texas!

[–] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Good to have that hateful little man out. I never would have believed it if you predicted it.
