This is step one in a very long road.

I hope all these newly elected democrats have the inclination to do the right thing, and the stamina to continue doing it long enough to actually have a positive impact.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 days ago

This is step one in a very long road.

Probably more like a dance move in Thriller. Forward, backward; looks like forward but goes backward. High kick; looks like backward but goes forward.

It took things to get that bad before they flipped. I don't expect them to stay there, but I have blind optimism.

Now let's just hope there aren't so many DINOs that we actually have a majority because i do NOT have blind optimism there.

Holy shit. It's real.

Blexas is really happening!

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 109 points 2 days ago (1 children)

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 56 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is the best news I've woken up to all year.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

I sat up all night in Europe following the election results. Couldn't fucking believe it. The whole world just drew a slight sigh of relief.

[–] theedqueen@lemmy.world 67 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I’m loving Abbot getting the boot too. Eat shit asshole

When is Cruz’s ass up for re-election? I’d love for Jasmine Crocket to take the other seat. Plus Cruz being felled by a black woman would be delicious.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just want to say one last time that Greg Abbot is a piss baby.

Kind of in disbelief right now. A far cry from how I felt back in November of 2024. If only I knew back then how severe the backlash against Trump would be in the midterms, I might not have been so despondent at that time. South fucking Carolina, and possibly FUCKING MISSISSIPPI have elected Democratic senators. Like...what???

Edit to add: Almost forgot, but Alaska might be going blue as well. Un fucking real.

[–] andrewrgross@lemmy.today 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I remember folks asking in 2024 "What do we do if Trump wins?!?" and my answer was "The same thing you should be doing if Kamala wins: the same thing you should be doing now." Which is organizing locally and building outward.

If you have a union, participate in it. If you don't, get to know your coworkers and normalize talking about what you'd like collectively. Organize your apartment building to get together on the holidays. Know who your city council member is, and your county supervisor. Participate in mutual aid and lobby for laws in your own backyard. Think about not just what you don't want -- Republicans in national office -- but what you really, really want: a shorter work week. Guaranteed access to living essentials. And then find the people, both inside government and out who have ideas for how to do this and ask how you can help. And keep doing it through the ups and downs.

Because your despair at Trump's victory can be just as ephemeral as your joy at Paxton's defeat if this is just sports. But if we have a purpose and a plan, every step forward or backward is part of a journey in which we can see our progress towards something that matters more than just the latest poll.

As a progressive Christian, I'm SO THANKFUL to finally see a US politician who doesn't wield his faith as a tool of division and hate but as an inspiration for change that helps people in need. I wish him all the success at flipping tables and fighting the power.

Wow, I'll take some good news even if a little premature. How nice of Elon Musk's few hundred million spent in Texas was completely wasted.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 110 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Elon keeps spending record amounts on campaigns and keeps losing. I love that for him.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 37 points 2 days ago (2 children)

If rather have his money being taxed, so he actually contributed his share to society, but the schadenfreude is tantalizing.

If Texas flipped, any state can flip. Why it matters is that’s where 1/2 of the U.S. Billionaires fled too, so as too avoid the California Billionaire Tax. Perhaps these new Texas Democrat leaders should consider a Texas Billionaire Tax.

BTW – the other half of the Billionaire carpet baggers escaping California either went to Florida or left the country.

I never thought I’d see the day Texas flipped blue. I’m so happy.

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I love to see it. I also loved seeing r/conservative melting down.

Turns out $7/gal diesel isn’t popular. Hmm who would have thought.

It must be a very cold day in Hell.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's so cold, it froze over with blue ice.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 79 points 2 days ago (12 children)

Hey Lemmy: No more making fun of my state anymore. We're blue now. We finally fucking did it. Lol.

All that money elon flushed down the toilet could have been used to feed people or house people.

[–] Nonprophet@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So shocking that 'Tala-FREAK-o wants TRANS EVERYTHING' wasn't a winning platform...

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

The Republicans have beat that horse to death and still refuse to stop.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 28 points 2 days ago (29 children)

Congratulations to all Americans! I can finally type your countries name with a capital "A" again. Looking forward to your healing and cleansing. Canada is quite forgiving, give us at least a few years though. Surely a better day and future for the American people. Phew! Take this opportunity to tighten up those authoritarian loopholes. The only way you should fall is from total external invasion, not from within, like trump and his enablers were trying to do.

Proud of Texas. All it took was a very bad blizzard, A bad governor. And some ice.

I might go visit.

[–] CreativeShotgun@lemmy.world 126 points 2 days ago (11 children)

Most of us don't suck. I keep hearing this rhetoric that because I live here, because I was born ans raised here, that I am a fool or complicit.

I am trans, hispanic, and atheist and I can't leave for many reasons, but amongst those reasons are because

this. Is. My. Home.

I love my city, my culture, my Home. I will fight in the face of the worst of us because I know we can be better here.

Do not damn us all, we're fighting

I know I'm very skeptical but many of those states only turned blue because guys like Talarico would pretty much run as a Republican 15 years ago. Texas didn't suddenly turn progressive, it simply didn't turn as fascist as the general MAGA movement. For example Talarico still run on hiring more Border Patrol agents and has a border security plan endorsed by republican Sheriff. On energy he still wants to "protect good-paying oil and gas jobs". If you look at his program it's mostly "I will push back against the worst parts capitalism while protecting most of our values". Which is great but it doesn't really reflect change of direction as much as different pace at which red state go full fascist.

[–] Ravenheart@lemmy.zip 52 points 2 days ago (4 children)

As a Texan, I don't fully agree. Talarico isn't perfect, but I've not in my lifetime ever seen a pro choice, pro LGBTQ, pro workers rights Republican. Texas, fucking finally, just voted for all three. This IS a sign of progress, and hopefully some healing.

Dread it, run from it, Blexas arrives all the same.

Never thought I'd see the fucking day. Holy fucking shit.

[–] plateee@piefed.social 53 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (10 children)

Yeah, the AP hasn't called this yet. Talarico may be heavily favored to win, but there's still a slim chance this doesn't go his way.

Just hold on until we get some better reporting.

(Also wtf is decision desk hq, and why are they wanting me to pay for "pro"?)

Edit: NBC called it for Talarico as others have mentioned, I'm still waiting for AP, but it's looking good for Texas! (Also Texas legislative is looking up for grabs too - at least their house).

[–] Squirrelknight@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It probably won't change much for Israeli politics, but it'll be nice if he personally faced some consequences at the very least.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 15 points 2 days ago (3 children)

My congratulations to Texas, who seem like they'll be well served by their new Senator. That's long overdue.
