Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person or their instance. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on. Keep on-topic

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Keisha Lance Bottoms will be the first Black female governor elected in the country, after she won the Georgia governor's race, according to a race call by the Associated Press.

Bottoms' win marks the first time Georgia has elected a Democratic governor in more than 20 years, breaking the Republican hold on state government in Georgia. But she will likely be working with a Republican majority in at least one chamber of the legislature.

Wild that we've been a country for 250 years and we've never crossed this particular intersection. Makes you think

It's also wild that it's Keisha Lance Bottoms, of all people. As an Atlantan, I didn't like her as a city councilperson or mayor and I can think of several local black women who would've been better, such as Felicia Moore or Stacey Abrams. But in this case, she's still better than the alternative.

Abrams deserves so many flowers for building the apparatus that gave us Ossoff, Warnock, and now klb.

She's a real one

but their names weren't funny enough. sorry.

We're only like 60 years removed from Jim Crow

I voted for her. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm pleasantly surprised. She was honestly a weak candidate because of how so many view the way she ran Atlanta. I'm ecstatic that she won, and it is a huge statement; not because of her identity but because of the fact that I drive by multiple permanent Trump signs every single day. Outside of the cities here, the MAGA runs deep.

Agreed. It was her or “I’m gonna be Trump’s favorite governor.”

I'm so happy for her.

Texas just got a Hispanic woman governor pushing out Abbott too.

Its a historical night.

These kind of news are horrible for the pedosphere. For them it's already bad enough that they lost, but doing so to a black woman? I mean, not just a black person, not just a woman... A black woman! That's something unbearable. I'm worried about the amount of people who will get a rage-induced aneurysm because of these news.

Now, for the sad news of today, it still is NOT Friday.

What a wonderful thing to wake up to! Today is going to be a happy day for so many reasons.

Stacy Abrams fought a very hard battle a few years ago and was instrumental in helping getting disenfranchised voters registered.

[–] Gpennyhigh@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

This is great! I thought it would be Stacey Abrams from the headline. I liked her from what I saw in previous election years and all the work she does.

[–] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 19 points 2 days ago

That is simply huge. A few weeks ago people were talking about it being a split ticket election. Democratic Senator but Republican governor. Wow.

Thankyou GA. You've been fighting the hardest since the Civil Rights Movement. Bless you and may your state prosper!

Wait, really? I would have sworn we'd have had one in one of the states by now.
