“Just because we have limited resources, and I think the energy and the resources need to be put into accountability, need to be put into investigations.”

Limited resources? They don't have limited resources for fucking ICE.

Harris, along with every other past President and Vice President need to shut the fuck up.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 43 points 1 week ago

I’m enjoying Obama’s standup routine.

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago

"don't hold him accountable, we need to conserve resources for accountability."

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 28 points 1 week ago (4 children)

They had four years to investigate Trump for January 6th and get accountability and didn't. Now is not the time to be dialing down the heat.

Also, what’s the point of investigations if we aren’t going to then DO something about the crimes they uncover? Taking impeachment off the table is like a prosecutor saying they aren’t going to convene any grand juries.

Every minute they spend doing their jobs is a minute they aren't soliciting donations. What they mean is they don't have the resources to beg for money, pass legislation, AND prosecute Trump at the same time. I know which of those things I don't consider a priority, but they feel otherwise.

If the law doesn’t apply to everyone, it applies to no one

[–] UpAndAtThem@lemmy.world 60 points 1 week ago (3 children)

It isn't a fucking game. After all the corruption and lawless fuckery, impeachment is a moral imperative.

[–] pageflight@piefed.social 9 points 1 week ago (6 children)

If they aren't going to have the votes to make it stick, I agree it feels like a waste of time.

I would like to see really hard lines on ICE, Israel, Iran. Though government shutdown doesn't hit me personally that hard; we would need to be ready to support vulnerable folks.

I actually think getting all the evidence ready for criminal prosecution seems helpful. And separately, building local government power.

But overall, I'm not sure how they can fight an illegal leader from within the legal system, if half the government is also illegal cronies.

[–] Cherries@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A lot of people in the country are politically ignorant. They forget quickly. These folks operate with a, "where there's smoke, there's fire" kind of politics, so if they don't hear about things happening, there must not be a problem. The Republicans understand this, which is why they conducted a bajillion useless Benghazi investigations to help foment distrust in Democrats and Hillary Clinton. Those investigations were useless and lead nowhere, but the side effect of talking about it all the time helped the MAGA Republicans gain power.

A third impeachement could serve a similar purpose, if the Democratic Party was willing to actually try to win. An important part of fighting MAGA is by constantly shoving into people's faces that MAGA are freaks. Democrats should be pointing out the smoke to show there's a fire.

Not investigating and prosecuting Trump and his criminal appointees is not acceptable. Only prosecuting Trump and his criminal employees and ignoring everyday crises like healthcare and cost of living and wage disparity is also not acceptable.

This is the problem with old-school Democrats like Harris. They don't understand that we expect them to walk and chew bubble gum at the same time.

They are adults, ostensibly smart, and there will be roughly 300 of them in both houses of Congress if the polls pan out. The only successful path is to organize themselves and get it all done. It's a false dichotomy to say you can only do one or the other.

Your job, Dems, is to repair the dam that has multiple huge leaks. If you seal one hole and the other is left open, the town below still floods. You fix them all or the dam breaks. Yes, it's unfair. No, there is no other option.

[–] GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

But think of all the missed fundraising opportunities if they have to spend time doing their jobs!!!

https://newrepublic.com/article/217316/democrats-trump-impeachment-party-base-no-choice

I think this response to Harris is interesting.

Harris’s idea that the party can simply run these investigations, uncover damaging evidence, and then—presumably—move on to other scandals is simply not plausible. The party’s base is fed up and insistent that Democrats “do something” about Trump and his cronies, which is to say that people want to see them stopped and punished. It’s hard to imagine that investigations alone will be enough to satisfy this bloodlust, even if Democratic voters know that there is no chance of convicting and removing Trump.

[–] mkwt@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Impeach Trump for the high crimes and misdemeanors of raping children. Make him defend that shit in a public trial. Make John Roberts watch that. Make the senators vote to acquit on that shit.

Ain't no statute of limitations on impeachment.

And I reckon if there's a dem majority they can vote to hear witnesses on the floor of the senate.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Make him defend that shit in a public trial.

That is not what impeachment will get you.

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 6 points 1 week ago (7 children)

It might be literally what is required to prosecute him for crimes he committed while president, according to the SC.

This is a really misleading headline. To be frank, what she actually said was she doesn't think they have the resources to properly entertain an impeachment and that they should spend their limited resources on accountability and investigations, something they had the resources to entertain.

I'm no fan of Harris, but let's actually be accurate.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

Thanks for the clarity.

[–] AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

If there’s any hope of reforming the presidency in a meaningful way post-Trump, it'll be necessary to show how the intended methods failed. Not using them out of expediency will just maintain the illusion that they could have been an effective solution.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago

Fuck her man! Give me a break. More of this, we don't want to be like them, need to concentrate on other things bullshit. Like we can't walk and chew gum at the same time. This administration is THE biggest thing in US history. It needs to be addressed.

She's the reason we will continue to spiral into fascism and someone will eventually show up to throw me in prison for this comment.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Unless they have a majority in the Senate, which I don't even think is possible, she's probably right.

Just bury him in House investigations. There's nothing else that can really be done.

[–] jhymesba@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

This is my thought. Impeachment is easy once you get a majority in the house. The rub is that conviction in the Senate is impossible unless and until Team Red pulls their head out of Trump's ass and entertains the idea that maybe what's good for Trump isn't good for the party. Not going to hold my breath for that. Instead, play the investigate investigate investigate game and drag all of Trump's skeletons out of the closet no matter how much they chatter their jaw bones. Since it's almost Halloween and all... :)

[–] nullify3112@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (12 children)

Harris said Democrats should be “uncompromising” and “not sit around, you know, being genteel about the relationships” but maintain accountability when it comes to cuts to healthcare and oversight on the Iran war.

Ok so now Dems are ok with this war? Am I the only one who still thinks Trump blatantly started a war without congressional approval and should be impeached for it?

Maintain accountability for healthcare cuts? Are they saying that austerity is coming back even stronger and they want to use Trump as a shield for their right wing agenda ?

Class traitors all of them…

The US stopped even pretending to care about war crimes in 1999.

Please, for the love of democracy, read the fucking article and not just the headline. Learn how impeachment works and why it will not work to remove Trump. Learn what politicians can ACTUALLY accomplish and set your fucking expectations accordingly.

Wanting things does not make them happen. I want a pony and a sports car. It doesn't matter how strongly I want those things, wanting doesn't do shit. If I'm a kid, wanting those things doesn't enable my parents to be able to obtain them.

The main problem I have with people not fucking learning this stuff is that it leads to becoming suscepitble to fascist propaganda. "Both sides" because it seems like nobody can fix the problem. Vote third party because you don't like a few things some of the Democrats are doing. Don't bother to vote at all because who cares. All of that only serves to strengthen the fascist hold on this country.

Tired of the Democrats? Well, what are you doing about it? Are you just voting in the general election and bitching that your choices aren't better? Try supporting better candidates in the primaries. Try to help educate people about what's actually going on where you can do so. Or, if that doesn't work, we need everyone to get out there and....... force a change. Which will suck in its own way, and is more work than just "throw them all out!" because you ahve to have people and policies and systems set up to replace them if that's how things go.

The laziest fucking thing is to just browse the headline and griping about things you don't even understand.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I DID read it and her reasoning is shit.

Here's her first statement: "Just because we have limited resources, and I think the energy and the resources need to be put into accountability, need to be put into investigations.”

Here's her second point: "I think after the election, we all have to just also agree that our attitude has to be to get stuff done."

Not good enough for me.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (6 children)

And precisely what do you think a third impeachment without a removal will do, exactly?

Agree.

Just fucking shoot him.

Scotus has already said Impeachment is the only trial the US president has to pay attention to.

So, as expected, the blue dogs are already going for the "lets put it behind us and come together" bullshit.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 week ago

Yep the democrats should do nothing concrete. This is by far the most effective strategy.

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 6 points 1 week ago

We MUST listen to Her! She OBVIOUSLY knows What she's talking about! THATS why she ~~Beat Trump and became President! She has GREAT Ideas that Connect with People!~~

[–] Steve@startrek.website 5 points 1 week ago

Who asked her anyway

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Just because we have limited resources, and I think the energy and the resources need to be put into accountability

I'd have to agree that the military would be better served removing the administration than whatever the hell the goal is with Iran.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 5 points 1 week ago

My biggest issue against another impeachment (another... that shouldn't even be a thing) is how long it took before and how it didn't do much of anything. It's still the right thing to do, but I just see the results as yet another not even slap on the wrist. I guess the difference might be the end votes, and maybe this time it won't be a tie that makes it seem worthless.

The part that makes it feel so pointless is how Republicans will support him throughout, just like they did before, and how in the end they didn't say they still believed he was innocent, but that they didn't think he did anything wrong. That's exactly how they'll stand now, because if they didn't think otherwise... they'd be doing something about him RIGHT NOW. The 25th would have been used long ago. They're fine with this arrangement, and they'll want to keep it going as long as they can.

[–] droniecarp@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

Fuck that shit, I want to see way more than just impeachment. A torture rack on CSPAN would do.

[–] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Why? The first two didn't do a whole lot anyway.

[–] tigerhawkvok@startrek.website 4 points 1 week ago

Even given there's 0% chance of conviction, impeachment is a political process. It's important to announce where one stands, and what's ok and what isn't.

Also, why are Democrats incapable of recognizing that performative red meat to the base drives turnout and engagement? How much mileage and therefore actual votes did "Benghazi" and "repeal Obamacare" get?

That shit MATTERS.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Looking forward, not backward.

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yes, and looking forward we need to keep the atrocities from continuing and attempt to keep this shit from happening again. Which means impeach, prosecute, investigate, etc.

If we just ‘come together’ and ‘put it all behind us’ 100% we are here again, and soon.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 6 points 1 week ago

I mean, we are “here” again. Obama failed to prosecute Dubya for torture and war crimes. Which gave Donald the green flag to do what he’s doing.

  1. The rich and powerful protect each other.
  2. Establishment dems don’t really hate what’s going on.
  3. Or, their donors don’t hate it.
