Politico notes that the appeals panel hearing our case had deep reservations about the government’s arguments, with Judge Patricia Millett asking: “Can the president then offer on eBay to sell them, all of our national security secrets, to the highest bidder?”

The government’s response was, in short, “yes.”

Aaron Schwartz got hounded to suicide by the Feds for downloading a library of scholarly articles.

Good people are in disadvantage in this fight :(

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

good people are at a disadvantage in every fight.

[–] ishartdoritos@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Are good people really good people if they make the world safe for evil people?

Maybe those aren’t good people. Just passive people.

There was a time when openly calling yourself a nazi, for example, would have gotten the shit kicked out of you. And rightfully so. Now good people just don’t respond.

I’m a little bit old, but that came with a genuine lack of shit for my own safety.

I’ve gotten into 3 solid fights in the last year with the kind of people you see in London Tommy Robinson rallies.

I really like the idea that I made this time quite shit for a couple of bald head racist dickheads.

I think they should be scared of being proud racists.

I’m as white as they come, I’m also bald, I’m also old. So it’s really difficult for them to point at me and accuse their imaginary immigrant enemy.

I hope they’re still hurting.

He wasn't a good person, he was a less bad person.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 117 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They aren't even hiding the corruption any more, the enforcement arm is mostly MAGA and if we don't do something it will get much worse.

[–] MalReynolds@piefed.social 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You'd think it has bottomed out, and you'd be wrong.

All it takes for evil to flower is good people not weeding.

Armed, masked men kidnap and murder with impunity on American streets and not a single round has been fired in their direction. Nothing, nothing, has made me more aware that we are done as a country.

Anyway, I'm actively looking for them. None within 100+ miles so far. I'm not ready to die, I'll be scared shitless, but I'm opening fire if I see masked men abducting people on my streets. I'll die, but I won't die regretting cowardly inaction.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 5 points 3 days ago

This is the way. And same here.

Armed, masked men kidnap and murder with impunity on American streets and not a single round has been fired in their direction.

Trump had at least one assassination attempt, and Charlie Kirk got murdered.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

trumpletantrum had a staged assassination attempt to sucker fools like you into sympathy votes. And Charlie Kirk died protecting the gunmans rights to give him a much needed emergency tracheotomy.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So the same Secret Service that Biden purged, and Trump wasn't in charge of, was in on it? Biden's FBI who concluded it was a real attempt was in on it? The NYT photographer that caught the bullet in flight was in on it?

Here's the best part, and I want you to repeat it, "Brave Donald Trump schemed to have a teenager fire live rifle rounds at him from 350'. And because Trump is known to run tight-lipped, crack teams of professionals, there wasn't a single leak."

How'd that sympathy vote go BTW? A very short, single-digit bump in the polls?

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 1 points 2 days ago

You morons will believe anything Fuhrer trump tells you. It would be funny if it weren’t so pathetic.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I don't get it.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

They’re not hiding it because every time they do their corrupt shit, no one comes to drag his coward ass out and separate his hemispheres on the Shite House lawn.

So, it boils down to this:

If you’re above the law, there is no law. He has proven this time and again.

And if the only recourse we have isn’t even allowed to be spoken because of some bullshit Voldemortian code that doesn’t allow open defiance of fascism, then I’m afraid there just isn’t much we can do.

[–] Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz 77 points 3 days ago (3 children)

You know if someone wanted to cripple the US militarily and diplomaticially, MAGA is how you would do it.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Why do you think Russia is waging Cold War II and supporting MAGA? Precisely for that reason. As you probably do know, I'm not trying to educate. Just venting frustration.

[–] kkj@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago

And they won't even end up reaping the benefits because their government is so corrupt itself. China will and Europe might.

[–] GenderNeutralBro@lemmy.sdf.org 15 points 3 days ago

Hypothetically speaking, of course. Like O. J. Simpson's book "If I Did It".

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

The Russian book on geopolitics is fun

imagine how fast you'd go to jail if you just accessed information without permission.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I'll buy all the secret papers in the Epstein files for public release, thanks.

[–] RattlerSix@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

People don't get this but the entire classification system is done under the authority of the president. Legally, the president alone decides what is and isn't classified. Of course one person can't do that so he delegates that authority to thousands of people under him. But it's literally impossible for the president to mishandle classified information because he's the sole authority on it. If he goes on TV and start spilling Top Secret info, that just means he has decided to unclassify that info and that's his right and no one can do anything to stop him.

It's just... never been a issue before.

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Wow that’s wrong. Yes he can declassify documents. You can’t sell secrets.

See when you declassify something it no longer has value as a secret because everyone has access.

So what trump did before and plans to do now is take classified files and sell them while they are still classified.

That’s illegal. He can declassify stuff, but you have to actually say it declassified.

You can’t keep it classified and say “well I have the power to declassify things”

I have the power to drive the correct speed in the school zone. That doesn’t mean all speeds I drive are therefore legal.

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

No, that's not how classification works.
