Dragon's Crown is a fantasy side scrolling beat 'em up style game that came out in ~2010s, if you consider consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 retro.

It is similar to the old Capcom Dungeons and Dragons arcade game, which itself was similar to Golden Axe.

Wanted to like it couldn't get past the boobage

Diablo on ps1 had a couch coop. Also legends of mana too.

I saw this one mentioned online, but how far into the story does second character option become available if I may ask?

[–] anamethatisnt@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes or so depending on how fast you are.

Always interesting to me how Japanese games tend to require story progression to unlock coop. Luigi's Mansion on Switch needed over an hour of gameplay to unlock coop.

Thanks! (I must acquire the context myself)

With the tag of multiplayer retro fantasy, the first game that came to mind was gauntlet legends. Playing it co-op was a mind-blowing experience for my younger self.

I was about to ask how it compares to the OG Gauntlet 4 person coop arcade.... Because that was peak if it were not for the quarter drain.

Then I processed that ("younger self" + Gauntlet Legends) = I'm an old man. I'll go page my nurse to wipe my but now. Go on about your business kids.

Gauntlet Legends on the Dreamcast is a very faithful console port of the arcade version, albeit with characters added from Dark Legacy.

How has no one recommended Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara? Classic Capcom beat 'em ups with a ridiculous level of D&D added on top.

Cast a spell at the Beholder? Bad idea, unless it's looking the other way. Dwarves find extra treasure, there are tons of secrets and hidden items, the cleric can turn undead, it's a ton of fun. Available via emulation or as a 2-pack on Steam.

Exactly what I came here to recommend. Both came preloaded on my r36s and are a fucking blast!

You might try Barony. There's for sure a learning curve, but it gives those retro arcade cabinet vides with the chunky 3d perspective and fast paced play style. Kind of like dnd if you weren't always pausing to check rules and you had a DM who hates you

Ooh I love how chaotic it looks. Appreciate it!

[–] capt_wolf@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Very chaotic, incredibly hard. The dlc race and class add-ons are fun to. Love playing as a succubus and having a horde of charmed creatures do my bidding!

How retro do you wanna go?

Divinity Original Sin, and the sequel, are older and both excellent

Can we stop calling 12-year-old games "retro"?

[–] anamethatisnt@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The funny thing is how the word for the newly produced items imitating older styles has come to mean "older" when speaking of games.

If we look at the description for retro it's original meaning is something new imitating an older style:

Compare to the word vintage that means old:

I see the word retro used for "old" spread outside of gaming nowadays too, I wonder what we will use to describe a new production imitating an older style in the future. :)

I think "throwback" is the term I see used most often these days that fits that definition

[–] essell@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Yes but Only for the people who people who don't consider 12 year old games retro.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Plus one for this suggestion. The Divinity games are some of the best co-op games ever made.

I believe you can also play Baldur's Gate 3 co-op as well (same developer for anyone who didn't know).

[–] Vinny_93@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

If you're open to expanding the horizons a bit, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a lot of fun. But it is a lot of mayhem and explosions and such. If you're familiar with Borderlands, it's that with DnD sauce.

Retro, coin-op, fantasy, co-op games that follow DnD classes, and first came to mind are:

Magic Sword

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Sword:_Heroic_Fantasy

Dark Seal (AKA Gate of Doom)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Seal

Also, Magician Lord is a decent fantasy platformer that is listed as multiplayer(I only remember seeing it single player though)

[ Bubble Bobble is the GOAT of arcade coop. Look up the Power-Up cheat code, for input into the attract screen]

Titan Quest is not RetroArch and more Action than RPG but it was a fun Diablo-like.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

If you want something emulated, Golden Axe or Gauntlet Dark Legacy for action or Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance for action RPG.

[–] missingno@fedia.io 2 points 1 week ago

Most of the Tales series. Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, Symphonia, etc.

[–] yaroto98@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

The old sidescrolling fighting games like TMNT on the NES/SNES were pretty good. Sticking with SNES, super mario kart, street fighter, and all important: NBA JAM!

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Maybe Terraria?
