Inspired by the intellectual tradition of ancient Greek symposia, this two-day event brings together prominent thinkers, academics, and members of the public for meaningful discussions about some of humanity’s most important questions.

The symposium will feature four major sections, each led by a distinguished speaker:

Philosophy: Stephen Hicks

Science: Steven Pinker

Religion: Justin Sledge (ESOTERICA)

Politics: Steven Bonnell II (Destiny)

Each section includes a one-hour featured lecture, followed by a 90-minute debate/discussion and a 90-minute community discussion involving the audience.

We are currently inviting academics throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to express interest in joining our speakers on stage during the symposium discussions.

"Four disciplines. Half a mind on a good day. Somehow, six pedophiles".

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

six pedophiles

In keeping with Ancient Greek traditions.

Calling what Steven Pinker does "science" is an insult to actual scientists, but has his star really fallen so far that he has to show up to events like this? Man's a professional bullshitter but he did bullshit his way into Harvard.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Take a look at his bio...

Has degrees in Philosophy. Main interests in Epistemology and Buisness Ethics.

Obsessed with Ayn Rand, writes books against socialism, and thinks the Nazis just took things too far.

not-a-journalist Mr. Hicks, you are not an economist.

[–] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's my thought too! Like, sure, in my mind Pinker is a complete hack and not worth paying even the slightest bit of attention to, but in his mind he's a serious academic. It's gotta sting that he's getting equal billing with a shitty twitch streamer. I hope it eats him up inside that fucking Destiny is considered of a similar intellectual level to himself

This is his Lydia Tár moment

Stephan Boticelli: Politics

The guy who thought Erdogan was the president of Egypt?

[–] miz@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago

calling Sexpestiny "distinguished" is laughable

[–] CliffordBigRedDog@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

My opposition to torture leaving my body as i hear Destiny open his mouth

This guy shouldn't have intact fingernails

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 31 points 2 days ago

finkelstein-lambaste Mister Berelli

[–] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 28 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I hope finkelstein shows up to heckle everyone.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Honestly an insult to the concept of competence Finkelstein has been pitted against him

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago

so two confirmed paedophiles, but two i've never heard of - so someone give me the rundown on Hicks & Sledge

also pangburn lmao. just send professor dave to eviscerate these freaks

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 26 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

Okay but Dr. Sledge is a marxist and fucking cool. Read his dissertation. I can almost guarantee he has no fucking clue who Destiny is as well, might be a funny watch.

[–] DBL@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Sadly, it seems that he's a Zionist. The FAQ section in the bio on his website says, "I am Jewish, belong to the Reconstructionist movement, and closely align myself with the teachings of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan." Which, as I understand it, makes him a Zionist.

[–] AstroStelar@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

He might not be:

Although the Reconstructionist movement officially supports liberal Zionism, it also has a disproportionate number of anti-Zionist members. Of the Jewish Voice for Peace rabbinical council, about 60 percent of their members were trained at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.

Wikipedia cites this: https://jewishcurrents.org/a-reconstructionist-reckoning It's about the increasing tension between the RRC and its non- or anti-Zionist students

[–] DBL@hexbear.net 2 points 1 day ago

Heard. Let's hope for the best then

[–] Maturin@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He’s definitely done a lot of work with academics in occupied Palestine but he also tends to say the right things about the genocide. I don’t think we should make political assumptions about people based on their religious denomination and doctrines. He appears to be a religious Jew and reconstructionism is the denomination that he connects with the most (which is basically the most progressive of all Jewish denominations). I’d rather we judge his politics based on his words and actions about the state and the project rather than his religious affiliation.

[–] DBL@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"I’d rather we judge his politics based on his words and actions about the state and the project rather than his religious affiliation."

I didn't judge his politics based on his religious affiliations. I judged it based on his own quote where he states that he most closely aligns his views with that of a zionist

[–] Maturin@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I may not be the Kaplan expert that you are, but as others have pointed out, a significant number of living anti-Zionist rabbis are reconstructionist, which is a movement Kaplan founded, so I do not think it is a fair inference to say a religious Jew who most closely aligns his religious beliefs with Kaplan is necessarily a Zionist. Unless you are saying Judaism and Zionism are the same thing.

[–] DBL@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

I'm happy for those rabbis who were able to pull their heads out of their asses but we're decades into the formation of the zionist entity and years into a genocide and if his self-professed ideological stance is, "I closely align with a fascist and their fascist, settler-colonial ideology" without so much a peep decrying the zionist entity then I'm not going to give him the benefit of the doubt. And I don't understand why you have an expectation of me to do so. Sorry your youtuber is probably a fascist piece of shit.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 days ago

That's genuinely devastating

Isn't sexpestiny like a hardcore far leftist who proves horseshoe theory? He's a Batista-Netanyahuist Isn't he?

[–] ALoafOfBread@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Esoterica is an interesting channel, too. Sledge definitely is an expert in his field (religious studies, mysticism/occult) and is a good presenter. Really good if you're into that sort of thing.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 days ago

I fw it heavy. Idk if he would entirely approve but I used to get super high and watch Esoterica videos. Still watch them sometimes but sober now which is less fun but I do retain more information.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 8 points 2 days ago

I love Dr. Sledge.

[–] larrikin99@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

You're mocking this? Really? The symposia which is going to raise 20 billion dollars for charity?

Anti obscure edit: Pangburn is an event organizer scammer who has been trying to book debates with Destiny (Bonnell) and public figures with far more importance by conjecturing that they might absurdly generate $5 million or more dollars of net revenue that can be donated to charity

[–] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

can be donated to charity

[–] regul@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago

Yoooo they made ragebait irl!

[–] kotak_doost@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

Hardest fuck marry kill

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'd watch if it was a battle to the death. I want to see the dude who looks like he's 900 years old and the dude who looks like he's 9000 years old pretending to be 30 call a truce and beat destiny to death with baseball bats before getting sledgehammered

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Wow I just looked up the first two people they suck so bad and their own very specific ways. Why is Sledge here lmao?

[–] Wertheimer@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That's funny, I recognized the other two names, but had to look up Hicks, and when he was about what I expected I thought I didn't even need to look up Sledge.

Edit - Thanks for posting his dissertation in your other comment -- this looks like my kind of read.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 5 points 2 days ago

OMG, noooo... Not Dr. Sledge?!

I thought UU churches were supposed to be cooler than this

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

You're probably thinking of UwU churches, easy mistake to make

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

In my experience, they tend to be much cooler than this. I was genuinely shocked that one was hosting this slop

What has PInker been up to? Anything slop?

Found an op-ed from last month that offers "two ways for universities to truly improve campus discourse — and their reputations." Let's get some reputational advice from a friend of Jeffrey Epstein, everyone!

  1. Get out of the moralizing business.

That’s rich coming from the guy whose whole schtick is finger waving at people for being “greedy” and not realizing how good they have it.
