Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Its true, though. The number of clients that go silent when I ask what operating system they are running is staggering.

This is one of your primary tools for work, people. I feel it's like a painter not knowing what different brushes are for, or a wood worker trying to plane a board with a sander. A professional should have a more than passing knowledge about how to use and maintain their tools. I'll die on that hill.

    [–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (1 children)

    "what do use?"

    "the Google"

    "huh"

user pulls up their Bing home page, in IE "see"

"...my prices just went up 5x"

    [–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

A week ago someone was telling me about problems they were having with IE, it was Edge.

    [–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it’s like a painter not knowing what different brushes are for

IMO, a better analogy would be a painter who doesn't know whether he's painting on canvas, paper, or a wall.

    [–] kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 week ago

Perhaps a better analogy is a painter who has no idea what their canvas is made out of; they know it's a canvas, they know it's for painting, they're faintly aware they're using some material stretched over a frame, but they just assumed a canvas is a canvas and they just never considered there might be other options than the one they've been getting.

Or ignoring the brand of the car you drive everyday. You don't need to know how it works, just know enough to operate it safely.

    [–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I was just taking a walk through busy streets, and thought about how I've heard of unbranded high-quality clothes and tech for people that have money but no desire to see advertisement in their house, much less be a walking advert β€” but I've never heard of unbranded cars. All the pricey car marques display their logos eagerly, and especially the β€˜executive’ cars' logos are larger than others'.

In fact, it's with really odd cars like retro-styled ones or obscure limited-production outfits, that I have to google as to what the hell I'm looking at. E.g. Morgan has their hood logo looking into the sky, might as well not be there at all.

I don't know why but putting BSDs in all caps disturbed me and I read it as BS DS..

    [–] rtxn@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

It's actually a new project called BSD Secure. The entire root filesystem is encrypted using TLS, and you need both a domain and a valid certificate to boot. Better not let them expire!

Ahh, right... That one weird non-foldable DS. Nearly pointless -_-

    AKA: The BS DS.

Wait, they weren't talking about that AC DC tribute band?

    [–] strawberry_enjoyer42@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Most people actually probably don't know what an operating system is.

Just as accurately, the meme could be:

"[...] the average person probably only knows Android, iOS, Windows, and MacOS."
    "And Linux, of course."
    "Of course."

    [–] KernelTale@programming.dev 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I get why they would know only windows and macos, but none at all?!

    [–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Many people do not think about an OS when they think Windows or Mac

    [–] Mistiygirl@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

    "Windows computer" "apple computer"

Still, a lot of people don't think of computers as anything beyond "computer", and wouldn't be able to make that distinction.

With phones you're lucky if they can differentiate between "Apple" and "Android" (with "Apple" meaning "like my phone" and "Android" meaning "weird Apple clone"). I remember in 2018/2019 we were filming something on our phones with an external mic and the person who provided the mics first smugly thought me an idiot and then was completely dumbfounded when I passed on a lightning to 3.5mm adapter for connecting the mic. Yes, this isn't about operating systems. But it shows that there's a kind of person that doesn't consider tech being like anything beyond what their device is like

    [–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

I've had people tell me the make before.

They simply don't know what an OS is. To them, the UI is simply part of the phone; it's a package deal.

    [–] mustbe3to20signs@feddit.org 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Most people know Windows, "iPad", "Mac" and "Samsung" as OS.

    [–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They're not that bad they know the word andriod.

    [–] MidsizedSedan@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

I still get asked for a Samsung charger, even though I am willing to bet that all of my coworkers phones are USB C.

I just want to say, to no one in particular…

Our β€˜home’ MacBook was end of life / support recently (2017 intel). I backed up then nuked the OS and replaced it with Mint/Cinnamon.

My wife (who is very definitely NOT technical in any way) has embraced this and carried on with no issues so far, with FF and LibreOffice. It’s been nearly 6mo and no home IT support required.

Edit: I think the point I’m trying to make is: if she can crack on with most regular tasks that really boil down to browser + office tools, and not be overly bothered about what the OS is, then there’s hope for people to migrate - especially with how distros have become so accessible of late.

    [–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 10 points 1 week ago

I replaced my girlfriend's old Windows PC with one running Ubuntu. Pretty much no issues so far.

    [–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

one thing about millenial wives : they can linux through a shitty computer. Technically my one's been using linux longer (this time round) than I have.

Okay but surely people get that BSD and Linux aren’t remotely the same thing, even though both are Unix-like and POSIX compatible, right?

    [–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 11 points 1 week ago

They may be quite different under the hood ... but when they both run much of the same open source software and even the same desktop environment, the actual difference that a user sees isn't all that significant. From the perspective of a non-techie user, Linux and BSD could be practically indistinguishable.

    [–] istdaslol@feddit.org 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We need to introduce the commoners to real time OS so they can ditch their fake time stuff

    [–] adeoxymus@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Thanks for putting those links there. I was like I swear I saw a crappier version of this yesterday πŸ˜‚

    [–] ian@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago

Computer scientists maybe. But real scientists know the meaning of the word average. And that out of, say, 1000 users, possibly only one is average.
