I started self destructing since AI has slithered its way into aspects of my life that gave me a reason to exist.

Not because I think it’ll save me but because I just don’t give a shit about anything anymore thanks to it’s gross existence.

I refuse to believe that's actually truth and not some BS from a professional bullshitter like the palantir cto

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

They hid their smoking and now smoke openly.

Article quotes 1 CEO, one of their own "journalists", and 0 labor leaders

Also he fails to name one noted in the article but they went ahead and published it anyways because fuck journalism I guess. He is lying, business insider has never been a reputable source for news

[–] subverted_per@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 3 days ago

Journalism is dead at pretty much all the major news outlets. Its bought and paid for slop that maybe has a human editor if it's important enough to the wealthy prick that paid for it.

"A cure for cancer" is such a magical nonsense phrase. We can already cure a lot of cancers. There are tons of people living healthy lives after surviving cancer. And we know more and more about how to prevent it (like not smoking). But they want magic.

Even bigger nonsense is the claim that AI will solve global warming. We already know the solution to global warming. We're just not doing anything with it, because of destructive business interests.

[–] redballooon@lemmy.world 25 points 4 days ago (8 children)

An AI tasked and powered to solve global warming will quickly work against humanity.

Not beating those cult accusations, are they?

[–] Sineljora@sh.itjust.works 31 points 4 days ago (3 children)

The world’s leading oncologist helped develop a lung cancer vaccine already, but he lives in Cuba, so they’ll probably just kill all Cubans and credit ai.

Just another out to lunch article trying to hype ai and keep it on the forefront.

Taking up smoking because they expect cancer to be cured in the future is like deciding to purposely crash your car because you know that broken bones can heal

They should skip cigarettes and jump straight to smoking asbestos

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 35 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

can you explain to me exactly how you'd smoke the famously nonflammable lung cancer rocks

I'm just curious, is all.

Now, cigarettes with asbestos filters, on the other hand...

Cool. Excellent thing to write a news article about, Business Insider.

Oh great people who can't research what cancer is are the ones researching AI.

They should do more research on what cancer is and what it is not. Cancer is not a single disease. "Cancer" is an umbrella term that is used to classify tumors with different genetic makeups. Different tumors behave and are treated differently.

Lung cancer can kill you FAST if you have a certain type of lung cancer. Smoking also causes almost half the bladder cancer cases people develop. It also increases your risk of stroke and heart problems.

Even if AI finds a cure for 'cancer' which it won't, I don't know why these people think the technology is going to be readily available for their treatment. I'm gonna state this again, these are the people working on the forefront of AI.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What the heck are you talking about. They'll just need to adapt their prompt to include, "Solve ALL cancers. Do not make a mistake." and they'll have it!

Even if you believe that, then is it also going to cure copd and pulmonary embolisms? I know this is likely just the CTO spewing bull, but 🤦‍♂️

Cancer isn't the only thing to worry about with cigarettes here's my experience :

I quit cigarettes for the second time when COVID happened. I haven't touched a cigarette in almost 8 years.

My sex drive was destroyed, bringing up the laundry wasnt easy, bringing my groceries up the stairs wasn't easy, I couldn't bike the miles I can now; My TMJ was going nuts, my breath smelt like shit, my teeth were being destroyed not just yellowing but actual tooth loss and pain, the amount of arguments that I think I spawned just to have a cigarette, the amount of emotional indifference it causes because you're never truly dealing with anything you're just smoking instead of dealing with whatever the fuck is going on and actually solving life problems is also fucked up.

And man are they stupidly addictive, like there's no possible way to buy a pack of Natural American Spirits and go, "I'm only gonna smoke once a week," trust me I've been there and it's impossible to just be like "I'm only gonna do this when I....." because you will want it again and even if you don't them, they might want you and that's the worst.

It's the absolute worst!!!! 15$/pack too like what the fuck!!!!! There's never gonna come a day where cancer research will outweigh the facts that cigarettes will destroy you. There's over 5,000 chemicals in one cigarette too, it's not just nicotine and tobacco, it's rat poison and arsenics.

More accurately: AI researchers are taking up smoking because of the immense pressure and burnout they're feeling.

[–] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I’d be more convinced if they intentionally contracted AIDS because they were confident in their slop machine.

… I still wouldn’t use their products, but I’d believe that they believe the word guesser machine might cure cancer

"So many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI," Sankar said in an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

This is the first clue that's it BS. I would like to believe that the techbros are doing it, but techbros aren't "AI researchers." They actually know the limits to their work. If Shyam Sankar wont name names, it's not happening. At least not in any appreciable numbers.

Now that just pisses me off more. As someone who thoroughly enjoyed smoking but has stayed quit since the 90s, one of the things that has kept me quit has been the very quiet idea in the back of my head that if I ever needed to, if I ever really needed to, I could and would.

But the deal is I have to hold out as long as possible, or until an occasion where it no longer really matters. Meaning that because I'm a fucking mule of stubbornness I would probably see a mushroom cloud on the horizon and then die cursing that I have no time to fire up one last smoke for the occasion.

I don't even remember the exact year I quit now. I only remember I made that deal with myself and have kept it, and how good that very first toke of the very first cig is: all the rest go very quickly downhill from there and you're back to tasting like an ashtray and feeling like shit and wheezing up stairs. (Yes, it took me multiple tries to quit.) But I always had that one fantastic "emergency" first toke hidden in the back of my wallet of self-restraint.

And now these motherfuckers have taken that too. Pride's not great for much, but goddamn if I'll join these little pricks in a smoke. They've just sucked all the joy out of even the thought of it. Probably for the best, but damn. Hope it kills the little shits.

[–] Hobo@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

From one ex-smoker to another, take some solace in the fact that they're at the extreme tippy top of the Dunning-Kruger curve and somehow think cancer is just one thing. There's so many different kinds of cancer they're hard to enumerate. With any luck you and I both will watch them slowly kill themselves in their death cult while we still have that last smoke tucked away in our back pocket.

Do they promise? Do they also promise to never spend healthcare money on lung cancer? And will they promise to smoke far away from us so we never have to smell that s***?

Somehow I bet they won't make those promises. Because they're liars. Because that whole field is built on lying. Vaporware can't make anything real, ever, than the people who actually do the software development are keenly aware of that fact.

[–] Alfredolin@sopuli.xyz 11 points 3 days ago

Yeah sure Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, I believe you 100%.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 25 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Sankar did not name any researchers or provide evidence for the claim. Smoking remains a major cause of preventable illness and death, and no AI breakthrough has eliminated the health risks associated with cigarettes.

He's full of shit
