I heard kill the billionaires ... and ban future tax evasion. anyone else hear that?

[–] FE80@lemmy.world 15 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

This guy is auditioning for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 3 hours ago

dont think he needs it, the DNC likely determined already. hes just giving himself more exposure so that people vote on him based on recognizability alone. thats also how trump won too, being in MEDIA alot helped him.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 17 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Let's all be clear, this is him campaigning for president.

What, the, fuck. What goddamn idiots are advising Democratic candidates?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 hours ago

he disappeared for a few months after making those stupid rants at trump, where was he the whole time.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 3 hours ago

Not idiots, or well not just idiots. Representing the interests of the rich is his job with everything else being secondary. This is the default state of a neoliberal regardless of intelligence. The target of this message is American billionaires, not you.

[–] bertlewirth@lemmy.world 12 points 5 hours ago

I already had no respect for him, but, somehow, I have even less now. You fucking turd.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

he was always there to serve the rich nothing more. even his own father was defending rich people as a lawyer. and thats why he had no influence out of moteray, when he was still in the state congress for a while.

Shocking, the guy who was caught at a 2020 dinner party at French Laundry during the pandemic when he had asked Californians to avoid group gatherings for the Thanksgiving holiday.

People like him, HRC and DWS are the reason Bernie wasn't the DNC candidate in 2016...and are why we're in the mess we're in right now.

Trump didn't win in 2016, HRC lost.

They were too scared Bernie would expose their crimes and corruption, and now we're living in the Turd Reich.

EDIT: DWC should have been DWS

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 18 points 8 hours ago (6 children)

He reminds me a lot of HRC. We know he exists to run for president, but we know very little about what he actually stands for. We know what he's against.

Social democratic policies were also just not as popular in 2016 as they are now. In just a few weeks, a full decade will have passed since 2016.

In 2016, people more or less took American democracy for granted. The voters never knew about the danger that Trump's ideology posed to the republic. This was following eight years of Obama, so right-wingers were thought of as fundamentally just people with bad policy ideas and not people intent on destroying democracy.

Only since then have people really started coming around to social democracy, democratic socialism, and other left-wing ideas. Over time, people have begun to realise, Bernie was right.

It really is too bad that Bernie is so old. He deserves a good retirement, but given the current political climate, he's going to keep fighting for the working class until the bitter end.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

they were blinded by culture war issues, thats why.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Traditionally, when times are good economically are when people find time to advance social policies. That's why the Civil Rights movement found success in the 1960s. I'm sure had King marched across the South in 1929, the voters and political class would have had no appetite for it. Democrats through the economy was fixed forever once Obama was elected, but they were evidently wrong.

As long as there are different socio-economic classes, it will always be class warfare. Everything will be done to veer the fight away from class warfare. Legitimate causes like feminism and equal rights will be used as distractions to veer away from class warfare. It will always be the mega rich vs everyone else.

Gavin realizing he will never be president, so he is trying to secure his future as a Silicon Valley lobbyist.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 25 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Newsom is a fine example of the kind of democrat that needs to go.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 3 hours ago

id say hes further right than biden, he makes him look tame in comparison. newsom was willing to entertain right wingers like nick fuentes.

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 10 points 6 hours ago

This dude will let you down every time, trust me.

[–] inari@piefed.zip 17 points 8 hours ago

The one good thing here is he's made it clear who's his boss (and it isn't the people)

[–] modestmeme@lemmy.world 9 points 8 hours ago

Taxes need to be raised for the wealthy at the Federal level. Prop 40 is a one time, performative scheme that will spend years in court being struck down. But if it gets you guys to vote, fine.

[–] mr_rusty_shackleford@lemmy.world 8 points 8 hours ago (6 children)

Feel like an outlier here, but creating a billionaire tax at the state level seems ridiculous, and would actually harm the state. It is so easy to move the money outside the jurisdiction of that state to another when you are that wealthy, so the only effective way to implement would be at the federal level. Can someone help me understand why a state level billionaire tax makes sense?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 3 hours ago

billionaires arnt going to live in redstate hellholes like missouris/misssipi, unless its an wealthy community, but they wont do businesses there.

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 11 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Didn't New York already do it and it proved that billionaires will stay put and not move to a hick backwater just to save a few bucks they wouldnt even notice losing?

[–] mr_rusty_shackleford@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

What they did is very different. They taxed residential properties not used as primary residences valued over 5 million. The CA tax is a one time 5% tax on the worldwide net worth of billionaires.

[–] obvs@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Or, and hear me out, the states that they move to could follow suit and completely negate the ridiculous argument to begin with.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 2 points 4 hours ago

It has been shown multiple times that a few will flee, but many just stay. Depends on how good life is for them in that area, and a highly developed state with a massive GDP will have no problem to stay attractive.

But i agree, making it harder to avoid on a federal level would be better.

[–] Hello_there@fedia.io 14 points 7 hours ago

Somebody has to do it, and waiting for the death of the filibuster to have anything get done is a terrible idea

[–] hazard_iguana@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

You’re not an outlier, but it’s where the current political climate sits. State governments have to do something because the federal government, headed by a facist, has withheld funds from states it deems enemies.

The difference between trying to get rid of a leech on the government and just sitting there and taking it is pretty clear to me. If they leave… so be it, billionaires don’t create jobs, the companies full of employees do. At the point they become billionaires, they are likely trying their hardest to reduce jobs as well.

But also California is a very nice place to live and people want to live here. It’s not like you can just say “I don’t reside in California” and not pay the tax either. The FTB has the 5th largest economy in the world behind it, it will determine if you have residency in CA or not regardless if you say you don’t. And it’s in their best interest to put the time and effort into proving it for the billionaires that want to try.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 hours ago

If it's so easy to move, why are they fighting it?

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

If that headline was only the first 8 words, he would have my vote
