Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

It's already both happened to me that I didn't notice I couldn't move a piece without exposing the king or that I won by accident. Had the game not announced this, I wouldn't have known.

And perhaps the opponent might not notice my mistake either. Or it could just be a strategic high-risk scenario, rather than a mistake.

Chess has been extensively play tested and the balance is peak.

It's worth mentioning that white has a small but notable advantage.

They still haven't fixed the board flip glitch or the "look over there" exploit that allows you to rearrange the board if your opponent actually looks.

Not to mention that there's nothing in the rules to prevent you from putting a mirror behind your opponent so you can see the location of their pieces

knights are OP and need to be nerfed tbh

If you think the knights are OP, wait till you find out about the knook!

Technically, chess ends one turn before the king is taken. "Checkmate" basically means, "I can capture your king next turn of I want to and there's no way you can avoid it."

You're not allowed to put your own king in check because, if this were allowed, stalemate wouldn't be possible; the game would always end with the loser moving their king into check and the winner taking it. The rule allows the player of a losing game to still play for a draw, as opposed to simply resigning.

Can you explain how stalemates would be impossible if you could self-check? Functionally I don’t see how that’s any different from resigning.

You could still stalemate by avoiding check and causing threefold repetition.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you self-check, your opponents next move is always to take the king and win. Check means 'if it's my turn I can capture your king'.

[–] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How is that different from resigning?

The player can still draw by refusing to self check, right?

[–] Player2@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you refuse to make a move, you resign, you lose.

If you are unable to make a move, it's a stalemate, you do not lose.

It just gives you an extra chance to avoid a total loss by having your opponent make a mistake.

[–] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

Got it.

A game that would normally stalemate because the only move is self check becomes a loss because you have a self check available.

Had the game not announced this, I wouldn't have known.

Sounds like maybe you need to practice more.

Why, besides supporting your inability to properly apply the rules of chess?

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe -1 points 2 days ago

I mean I absolutely suck at chess (lack of working memory), and it's clear to me that you are correct.

You and your friends can set any rules for any games you play, as long as you agree to the rules together. Sometimes it's fun to try and change the rules.
