The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed legislation giving Donald Trump broad powers to impose sanctions on Russia and tariffs of up to 100% on countries that buy Russian oil and gas. It will now go to Trump to be signed into law.

aren't WE buying Russian oil??

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 1 points 24 minutes ago

Right and wrong, and even just internal consistency, are for peasants. This is just profitable/convenient. 🤷‍♂️

[–] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 18 hours ago

Idk how we are going to tariff ourselves but I’m sure it’s not a 5d chess move.

[–] nogooduser@lemmy.world 96 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

So they’re going to sanction India in the same week that they did a deal with Putin to supply diesel.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 12 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The hypocrisy is incredibly embarrassing, as an American

[–] wampus@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Nah, most Americans have no shame at this point.

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 1 points 7 hours ago

It's easy when you don't pay attention to the news.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 25 points 23 hours ago

Because they want all the export diesel for themselves to try to lower prices

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 12 points 20 hours ago

The article is from September 17th. Who knows what happens to this policy now. But it's still quite possible the USA will sanction other countries for buying Russian oil, because they want the oil for themselves.

[–] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 17 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

America is getting not even a mornings worth of energy from Russia. Those numbers sound big until you realize that America uses about 4.1 million barrels of diesel a day

For first shipment of 100,000 tons, that works out to be 733,000 barrels.

Even when Russia ramps up to 1,000,000 tons, it works out to 1.5 days of energy for America.

This does nothing to help not only the US or the rest of the world, but it does provide a lifeline to Donald’s puppet master with extra money to continue buying munitions from China, Iran, and North Korea in their war against Ukraine.

It’s another grift sound bite from a pedophile that was voted into power by a sick populace.

Yeah, but it gives Donny a chance to blame Ukraine for being the reason Russia can't uphold its end of the bargain. He'll use this excuse to further distance the US from Ukraine and it's allies

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 21 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

The double standard of USA is insane, USA is a despicable country reserving rights to punish others for what they do themselves.

Also USA should now b sanctioned by the rest of the world for doing exactly what they demand others don't. USA is a traitor to their allies, and that should not go unpunished.

[–] Miller@lemmy.world 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

A pariah USA is the future that is on the cards.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

This has been true for some time, it's just that with Trump it's gone to another level.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (2 children)

I agree but how does that punishment get played out? Like if we manage to kick the fascists out, and rebuild a semblance of of a society, how do we pay reparations to the entire world? I mean we can grind up the billionaires and give people their money but we have $40 TRILLION in debt. There's not paying that back.

What is a mechanism of punishment for a society who so plainly doesn't give a shit about anyone outside their borders?

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Not respecting US patents would be huge.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Nationalize and publicise the research data and other intellectual property of the large corps. That could be helpful.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The US still hasn’t made reparations internally, my tribe for instance was promised a voting member of congress over 100 years ago who still hasn’t been seated… Native Americans didn’t even get the right to vote until the 1970s.

I wouldn’t hold your breath for any of the countries doing bullshit to ever atone for anything.

[–] HasturInYellow@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Unfortunately this is the most likely scenario.

Obviously that is very different and way more acceptable. You see Russia selling cheap oil to USA benefit USA which is good. Russia selling cheap oil to India doesn't really help USA, which is bad.
If India paid a 10% tariff to USA for the oil they import from Russia, it would be much much better.
It's not really that hard to understand. America first!
/s

Cut out the middleman. 10% tariff payable directly to Trump.

[–] Zeppo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 20 hours ago

It’s not about benefiting America, though, just benefiting Trump by trying to lower fuel prices before the election.

[–] MyDogLovesMe@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Absolutely, infinite greed and total lack of morals.

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 2 points 19 hours ago

The spin they have is that Russian diesel was banned for export by Russia itself due to the shortages they were having.

So they can say it was “Ukraines war” causing it to happen, and Trump figured it out by cutting a deal with Russia to release it to the world.

It also makes continued (successful) waging of the war Ukraine needs to in order to get the orcs out something that is now against US foreign policy.

I really do wonder what Epstein recorded for Putin to have the “most powerful man in the world” acting like such a little bitch.

Fuck Trump. I hope he gets Ghaddafi’d

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 5 points 18 hours ago
[–] ShellMonkey@piefed.socdojo.com 10 points 22 hours ago

So this is from Sept 17th in case anyone else is confused, when we still wanted to punish Russia for being bad.

Now they're great and going to give little Donnie all the gas to try and save a couple votes.

[–] MrSulu@lemmy.ml 4 points 20 hours ago

"discussed at a high level...". translates precisely to another idiotic idea by Trump that further screws the population of the US.
Even as an active detractor of Mr. Modi, I think it likely that he will outmaneuver Trump without meeting him head on.

[–] Master167@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

So really this gives the Presidency more control over tariffs? I wonder how the current president will abuse it.

[–] weaselsrippedmyflesh@piefed.social 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

It hasn't even been a month and already this has aged poorly.

[–] Greyghoster@aussie.zone 2 points 13 hours ago

Everything associated with Demented Don ages poorly. Anyone who does a deal with him is likely to be done over.
