2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

How is that supposed to work, when the entire premise of the game is to skate with others? You're just going to skate alone in an empty city?

I mean seriously, the multiplayer aspect is the only decent part of this game. The only fun part is where you free skate around the city with others. This ain't Skate 4; remove the multiplayer, and there's no reason to play.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I think the mod has been downloaded 350k times because they asked for Skate 4 and this is what they got instead.

$20 says most people will give it a week and then realize there's no substance to this game and quit.

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Very well could be, but they don't want the game as-is. The same thing happened with SimCity 13 years ago. And as a stat that keeps coming up from developers of online mulitplayer games, 70% of people don't engage in the competitive modes, even of games where that's seen as its main attraction, like PVP in an RTS or even the biggest MOBAs. I don't know exactly how that translates to Skate, but it's not surprising to me that people didn't want a free to play online social version of this franchise.

Why don’t more devs just stay anonymous and send fuck yous to lawfirms

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

if the law firm found them, they're not anonymous anymore.

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

That just means they weren't anonymous enough.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 15 points 1 day ago (4 children)

How are they going to distribute something while being anonymous?

[–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 40 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Without even thinking: open source public code repository, p2p networks like torrents.

[–] artyom@piefed.social -5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You should probably think a little more. Public code repos are not anonymous. And torrents require some form of advertising to even know they exist.

[–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Public code repos are not anonymous

They can be. Throwaway account on hosted git service, connected through anonymity service (TOR, VPN..).

And torrents require some form of advertising

Many indexers are anonymous, a magnet link on a forum or even a site like lemmy is good enough.

I'm not going to argue about the semantics of anonymity on the internet. If you want to stay hidden enough to distribute a mod and not be found out who you are, you can do it. Its not that difficult.

I'd say if you can stay anonymous while distributing physical goods online, you can stay anonymous while distributing software online

You just did. Those things are not anonymous. And are subject to EAs lawsuits and likely to be taken down elsewhere just like they are on GitHub.

Nice try, law firm trying to learn our tricks.

[–] joelfromaus@aussie.zone 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This is honestly a valid question. We live in a time where even if what you are doing is in the boundaries of the law you may have to protect your identity to avoid the threat of lawsuit.

This is a good example. Paid for the game but don’t want it to be always online or whatknot? Don’t go tampering with EA’s game you naughty boy/girl.

I think about the times I’ve downloaded mods for games like the original Dawn of War or Star Wars Empire at war. Legality was never a question especially since those mods were still in-universe in those franchises but now licensing agreements mixed with more hostile and litigious publishers could make you a target for lawsuit.

Yes what about it

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 17 points 1 day ago

Biggest boon here is it seems to work on Linux with this mod. I can finally play it!

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 39 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've been waiting for 15 years to pay full price for Skate 4. They never gave it to us.

Not sure what it was about the new game that just didn't pull me in.

[–] Console_Modder@sh.itjust.works 24 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It was definitely Skate 4 being live service and my absolute boycott of anything EA touches that kept me away from Skate 4. If you still want something that plays like Skate 1 and 2, you should definitely give Session. Skate Sim a try

[–] BodePlotHole@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

This is the way...

[–] Gyrcas@piefed.zip 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

created (with AI assistance)

:(

[–] dil@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 day ago

Damn humans didn't do all this tedious work for free

[–] Cavemanfreak@programming.dev 11 points 1 day ago

I assume this uses the newest models to decompile the game so that they get the source code. Like it or not, but if that's the case this couldn't have been made without AI.

Install base game on steam, download zip from github, drop into install location of steam files, launch included program.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A lot of these ai decomps are going to be windows only.

[–] Twerp10@reddthat.com 1 points 4 hours ago

Yeah but not this specific one.

[–] AstroLightz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Might want to back it up if this is something that interests you. Never know when it'll be shut down.

I haven’t played a skating game since the old Tony Hawk games. Honestly, this is tempting me to buy Skate.

Is anyone here actually playing the mod?

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

If Tony Hawk is your only skating game experience, you're going to be disappointed. The controls are completely different; instead of hitting buttons to do tricks, you move the right joystick. It's intended to simulate real life skating. You're not going to pull off a Triple Impossible in this game. Also, the gameplay is nothing at all like Tony Hawk.

Also, unless you mean microtransactions, there's nothing to buy. The game is F2P so go ahead and grab it from Steam and then see for yourself if you like it or not.

[–] Erusset@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

I just downloaded and installed it on my steam deck easily and it plays fine. Also like someone else mentioned it is free. I didn't see a tutorial or anything so I'm watching videos of how to play now.

[–] DillDough@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

It's f2p, nothing but lame ass skins to buy. I have not played the mod yet but plan on doing so after I get bored of the new Star Wars racer.

The core of the game is actually good, there is a lot of fun to be had if you like skating but holy shit playing the live game is painful and this seems to fix most of that.
