Yet another reason to leave Discord.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 60 points 1 week ago (3 children)

The problem with leaving Discord is convincing anybody else to join you, let alone an entire social circle. There are dozens of "better" messaging platforms I've signed up for where I never sent or received a single message because I had nobody to add.

This is why we need it to be socially unfashionable to use discord. I coined the term "Discord bro" to refer to people who love and use discord exclusively. I entourage using that language when talking about the problem online and not being understanding or compassionate towards people. Convenience is a big reason for people using it. Stigma is a reason to switch.

This is a case where you don't actually need to "social!convince" anyone. It's piracy, you are aiming for people who already want to go where the links are. You put the pirate stuff over IRC, people will go to the IRC. You put it on a Discourse forum, people will go to the Discourse forum. You put a catgirl to weigh their souls beforehand to check they are human, they'll praise the catgirl.

Some people can have a fatigue where they're tired of just moving platform to platform. Communicating platforms is heavily saturated to where, nobody would feel that grand of a difference going from Discord to that platform when they can still do the basics. People still wouldn't leave Facebook, even, despite that platform having largely corroded over the years.

Until Discord is like charging people to use it, people aren't going to budge. In a world where your privacy is circumvented whether you know it or not, a lot of people just shrug their shoulders at you when you present alternatives all like "ehh, cool" before just resuming what they're already using.

Right?

I used Discord for about 15 minutes (OK, 6 months) before I could no longer tolerate it's crappiness.

and join fluxer

This will hopefully encourage them to switch to an decentralized open source alternate

We all know it won't

You'd hope so. People are at last actually ditching Windows for Linux, so it's possible.

Frankly if you are still using discord you deserve this.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Now what?

I was very disappointed that the rest of this paragraph didn't go in a completely different direction

[–] Draconic_NEO@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would expect exactly that from Discord bros...

I know right anything but leaving discord.

Mobilism never forgot the lessons of history. 🙏🏾 All hail Mobilism!

(i know they don't serve anime. it's relevant because they stayed on their own forum site instead of flocking to discord like a bunch of bandwagoneers.)

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is Fluxer still trying to get federation going? We need it. It would make it easier to leave Discord.

Matrix and XMPP have had working federation for years.

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago

The one thing I haven't figured out with Matrix screen share audio, I was told one of the last updates to the Cinny app added it, but I haven't found an option for it. Any chance you know if that works anywhere?

[–] waltersf@bookwyr.me 9 points 1 week ago

you should have just 🔁 the !anime@ani.social 🧵
Rizon is still alive and kicking.

[–] esc@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago

Well, irc still works for downloading things. Since like 20 years, with bots that just serve you exactly what you want.

[–] aphonefriend@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

Oh no. If only there wasn't fluxer instead.

Hunh. I wonder when the gaming community's next. 🥲

[–] yoriaiko@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago
