Where can one watch it these days?

[–] yuri@pawb.social 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

legally? no clue

i just search “(show) free streaming” on yandex and pick whichever result has the most complete catalogue. usually some shady site with “movies” in the url.

i think yandex is the only big search engine that doesn’t filter out fly by night streaming sites lmao

Trump Card (2020). It was a very weird movie. It's ⅓ political-ad-like straightforward Trump propaganda, ⅓ interviews with MAGA people, and strangely ⅓ about how Abraham Lincoln was awesome. There's also a tiny bit of "re'enactment of scenes from 1984" mixed in.
It also feels like it's aged very strangely with how much has happened in the last 6 years. I think it really needs a follow-up "where are they now?" kinda sequel documentary.
Obviously not good, but maybe worth a watch.

Recently I started reading Debt: The First 5,000 Years and it REALLY made me want to rewatch Fullmetal Alchemist (2003). Some of the basic ideas in Debt, like moralization of debt, connection to religion, origin of money, etc. really reminded me of FMA. It's really interesting to watch it while especially considering how the characters' moral values are always interacting with alchemy. The 2003 series in particular really emphasizes that "equivalent exchange" is not just a law of alchemy, but an actual philosophy that the characters hold to also apply to transactions and life in general. Notice how in a chemical sense, equivalent exchange is only about mass and energy but the characters always describe that as value. They don't say "to create something, you must supply the equivalent mass and energy." Rather, they say that "to gain something you must sacrifice something of equal value." And there's something about the way the series overlaps debt, grief, guilt, and taboo that's just great. The characters always struggle to answer the question "can something come from nothing?" both physically and philosophically.
It's extremely interesting and I highly recommend the 2003 FMA series to anybody who hasn't seen it. I've just about gotten past the point where it starts to significantly diverge from the 2009 series and I'm excited for the upcoming rollercoaster ending.

I'm quickly running out of things to watch. I watch one episode per night of shows I'm watching, or as episodes are released.

I've been rewatching Mob Land because I realized I forgot what happened when I tried to watch the first episode of season 2. I'll be caught up soon.

The Gentlemen. Half way through season 2.

I don't know that I'll want more Guy Richie after this. Maybe he'll do something different that I'll also like, but I think I've had my fill of British organized crime.

Dark Matter season 2. It's a logical season two, story wise, but not as fun as season one. Although, the boy just got in the box again, so maybe he's going to have some fun adventures. I thought they forgot the reason for the show was to go to different crazy alternate universes.

Futurama and President Curtis, both of which just ended. I liked President Curtis more than I expected to, which isn't saying much, but it's something.

I'm about halfway through my third watching of Lexx. I watch an episode here and there, and skip the ones I don't like, which is about one out of five.

I have Silo season 3 on deck, but I didn't care for the first two episodes. I'll probably try it again.

I have Widow's Bay on deck, I watched the first two episodes when it came out, and found it so-so. I know everyone says it's great, I'm not sure it's for me. I'll probably try it again.

A couple of films:

  • The Murderers Among Us (1946) - one of the 'rubble films' shot in immediately post-war Berlin. A straightforward tale of survivors, trauma, war crimes and consequences very well told, with elements of pre-war expressionism, and the extraordinary backdrop of the city in ruins.
  • The End of Oak Street (2026) - opening with a good deal of homage to early Spielberg, this one is undemanding fun and does pretty much what you'd expect of a dino-flick but offers very little that is new or exceptional. The ending really doesn't bear too much critical thought though.

Gave Drunk Histories a go, the UK version. Pretty funny watching comedians get drunk and tell a historical event. Then have actors act it out, adlib and all.
