The pupils’ grievances range from overloaded timetables and overcrowded classes to insufficient teachers and unbearable temperatures during heatwaves earlier this year.

These things have been going on for too long. I live in France and work in higher education.

It might seem like a weird thing to complain about, seeing how many vacations we have here, but students do spend more time in class compared to other countries. We have to start at age 3 here. We haven't seen any benefits from this yet.

It is a very normal thing for teachers to be absent without replacement for months at a time. Some students I work with didn't have a maths or language teacher for their final year in high school.

There are schools with more students than desks, with windows that don't open, with leaks, with bathroom stalls without doors. I have held lectures in rooms where the temperature was 37°C and admin said "bring a fan from home". On Tuesday of this week it was 32 in my class.

I hate seeing things burn. It makes the protest look like a wild riot. One of the private elite schools also did a walkout and protest... Did the police show up? They sure did, but they didn't lay a finger on anybody because you never know who their parents are. The press makes this look insane, but student protests have the support of the communities as far as I can tell.

It makes the protest look like a wild riot

This is not a bad thing. A protest that doesn't offer the threat of a riot is nothing but a parade.

As an American I was so impressed that the students immediately saw though the bullshit system that knows time is on its side. Ots obvious their problems were being ignored but the state can't ignore a fire.

Starting at three wont stop as its about providing free childcare so the parents can work rather than being results based. Yes thats awful, its also the same reason schools wont shut during heat waves as it impacts child care and thus workers.

[–] Miaou@jlai.lu 4 points 1 day ago

Ugh, I can already hear my parents parrot Zemmour's "l'eNsAuVaGeMeNt" while watching CNews.

[–] cinoreus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Woah, is this the scene in both public and private schools in france?

[–] pasdechance@jlai.lu 6 points 1 day ago

Private schools have smaller classes and more funding from tuitions and fees. I have not heard about issues with missing teachers in private schools, but the temperature part does happen. Just looking at what is happening where I live today, most of the high schools are closed to keep students safe, a few are barricaded by students.

It isn't like there are roaming gangs of teens out in the streets. I have not seen any of the protests with my own eyes because there are no schools between my house and my work (which is a university, but a private one so the students won't blockade it because they pay to be here...)

Education national is just utterly badly run. If u r a teacher and wanna do good u wont have the tool to do so. On the other hands if u dont give a flying fuck then everything will go well for you. The only viable short term solution is to simply reshake the hierarchy of that watsefull institution that doesn't produce anything of value. On the other hand wanting every kid going trough school as a way of national cohesion show their limit since so long. Having teacher being beheaded cause some inhuman retard cause offended is next level broken. The institution still hasn't learn their lessons. It s not giving 10k prime a year so teacher are enclines to take care of trash that the system will work. I also known most student only use the legetime concern about the state of affair do do everything under the sun except learn. So much stuff to do about everything in regarding that failing administration.

French person here : they're making it look like civil war.

It is not.

It's protests, and it should be a revolution. The gov is just treating it like the Yellow Jackets in 2018, putting the emphasis on isolated incidents to justify the use of force and intimidation on young people who fear for their future.

They claim they'll listen to the student's representatives and open a platform for students to express their doleances, but it's all façade, as it was for the Yellow Jackets and the Citizen Climate Convention.

Macron and his goons are the most hypocritical, cynical, lying cunts that have ever been in power in this country, and it's been going on for almost 10 unbearable years of silent complicity with the far right and poaching poor people's lifeblood to line the pocket of the upper class with more money than they could ever need in a 100 lives.

Can't wait for Mélenchon to chase those cunts out of power.

Mélenchon's party "La France Insoumise", France's equivalent of the DSA in the US, has expressed their support to the students protests and has called for its members to accompany and protect them, wearing white helmets or armbands. The collaborationnist establishment is, as usual, using the same old tropes we're all getting tired of to "condemn the violence" and make it look like Melenchon is responsible for it all. It's been their go-to for so many years, it's not even funny anymore, just pathetic.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Media: reporting it like it's a civil war = the protestors are just winning.

Media: trying not to report on it at all: nobody listened to the protestors and now it's a civil war.

[–] bigmamoth@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lmao

Mélenchon wont do shit since he will never be elected. He s litteraly the most rejected political figure in France, more than lepen, and even zemmour. So if u want something to work dont associate anything with him. He s just an oligarch that won't let his power go when his time is over for so long. The left won't be able to propose anything while this individual want to play the politician.

[–] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 2 points 1 day ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 yeah yeah, sure. Go vote for Glucksmann or Le Pen or whatever establishment replacement is in store, nobody's keeping you from it nor from your propaganda

We in the U.S. have much to learn from the French, including their students.

I've seen grown adults in pickup trucks harassing and ridiculing high school kids who walked out to protest ICE. And not as some scandalous anomaly, everyone received it as roughly normal, and it wasn't a one-off either.

It is hard to maintain a commitment to virtue and justice here. Of course it must be done, but the constant social pressure not to, even just directed at children - it's wild. It's a thick, suffocating blanket of ignorance and hate.

[–] kestrel7_7@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The USA had the largest series of sustained protests in human history in 2020. Several of the largest one-off protests in world history have been in the USA in the last two years. Americans protest plenty, and get quite rowdy sometimes, even though we have a much higher chance of being murdered by police than French people do.

The difference? The French media engages this stuff, the American media suppresses it.

This is what a healthy democracy looks like when the rich get out of line

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's just a campfire by french standards.

This is why Americans ain't on shit. The French know how to fucking protest. Americans schedule a protest for a few hours then go home without anything.

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Reddit/Lemmy always says this but these kinds of protests are a lot more polarizing in France than you all seen to think. People are generally fine with disruption but actually destroying shit is another thing

protest by high-school students over long hours, teacher shortages and decaying facilities has escalated into “urban violence”, the French government has warned, as it said many schools would switch to online classes to protect teachers and pupils.

The pupils’ grievances range from overloaded timetables and overcrowded classes to insufficient teachers and unbearable temperatures during heatwaves earlier this year. Riot police have been deployed to confront the increasingly violent protests.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 26 points 2 days ago

Sounds like the conditions of schools are urban violence.

[–] remon@ani.social 4 points 1 day ago

Looks like a regular French protest 🤷‍♂️

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 25 points 2 days ago

These students are my heros. I wish we had this kind of energy in my country.

[–] aizakku@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 days ago

You know, these kids are all right.

*Continues to play with the weed.

[–] nkat2112@sh.itjust.works 20 points 2 days ago

This is the way.

[–] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why would these kids need to be educated? AI will be doing all the work by the time they're ready to enter the workforce anyway, so how can educating them now possibly help the shareholders?

[–] 001Guy001@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

how can educating them now possibly help the shareholders

They need to have meaningless busy work, they need to be distracted and occupied enough to not think about and not have the time and energy to build community and organize a societal revolution that would threaten the shareholders profits, or feel powerless to do anything about it.

Won't be a problem soon, now that musk and hegseth have the autonomous warfare command the shareholders will have armies of drones to keep the peasantry away from their fortresses and any valuable resources in no time!

Meh they need to go harder to top the french Revolution
