Not to say it’s not 100% true that America has a lot of racism, but also realize comment sections are flooded with bots and paid shills making it look way worse.
Off My Chest
RULES:
I am looking for mods!
1. The "good" part of our community means we are pro-empathy and anti-harassment. However, we don't intend to make this a "safe space" where everyone has to be a saint. Sh*t happens, and life is messy. That's why we get things off our chests.
2. Bigotry is not allowed. That includes racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and religiophobia. (If you want to vent about religion, that's fine; but religion is not inherently evil.)
3. Frustrated, venting, or angry posts are still welcome.
4. Posts and comments that bait, threaten, or incite harassment are not allowed.
5. If anyone offers mental, medical, or professional advice here, please remember to take it with a grain of salt. Seek out real professionals if needed.
6. Please put NSFW behind NSFW tags.
Why don't you come to the South instead of thinking you're the only real person online? People fucking suck. That's the reason we're online.
Be at funeral. See someone who you were not sure if they were coming. Ahh glad you could make it! Smiles when greeting them
Clearly happy the person died
These are rich people fomenting a race war to avoid the much needed class war. Don’t fall for it.
America isn't the way it is because of Trump.
Trump is the way he is because of America.
It's more like "Trump didn't shit on the floor, he just raised the carpet the turds were already there." IMO
I mean, I agree there were turds in the carpet already, but Trump absolutely did shit on the floor, whether figuratively or otherwise....
Fucking finally. Yes!
I mean — immigrants and people of color, especially balck women, have been shouting at us for generations that we are a racist country.
We started as a racist country, we inspired other countries to be racist (al la Jim Crow inspiring Hitler).
We’ve ALWAYS been this racist, it was just that for a little while people were a bit more quiet about it.
I just think white people are really good at pretending bad things aren’t happening all around them, just as long as it’s not to them.
alot of cinema has help whites being white washed so they are never seen as done anything bad. they dont like be confronted about racism, or even talk about it.
also there are unresolved greviences between POCs
Not to simplify too much, but the "they're eating the cats, they're eating the dogs" guy won a national election.
That was really the moment that solidified for me that a significant portion of the people of this country are irredeemable.
Racism is the cornerstone of Republican power. its why they are so hostile to anything that threatens racism, like education, and empathy, and moral values.
As President Lyndon Johnson once said.. "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."
Social media is a caricature. It doesn’t represent reality, don’t buy any of it.
But the racism is real, deep, and more subtle but scary. It’s shit said behind closed doors in my family, and that has left terrible imprints on generations.
Ted Cruz is the Senator for the State of Texas. This isn't a fringe county clerk in Mississippi.
He is one of the 120 most powerful people in the US. Senators have more power than representatives. The only people more powerful than a Senator are the President, Senate Majority Leader and Supreme Court.
What he says absolutely matters.
“I like Ted Cruz more than most of my other colleagues like Ted Cruz. And I hate Ted Cruz.”
- Al Franken
Yeah. Thought we were kinda winning the war against homophobia, racism, and all that.
Before trump.
But then trump showed up, and he said he was going to drain the swamp. He accomplished that feat. Every horrible human being living in the slime at the bottom of the swamp took a big breath of air, rose up into the daylight, and make their presence loudly known.
I had no idea the seething mass of willful ignorance, hatred, selfishness, and racism existed as deeply as it did here. It was like people all took their masks off and said “Here I am, and I hate every good thing you stand for.”
My ex-wife's grandparents lived just outside Chicago. Her grandfather used to hang out at the local mall, because he wanted to practice his Spanish by talking to random Latino families that passed by. He was so casually racist, that he would occasionally have someone threaten to kick the shit of him over something he said...and he had absolutley no idea why they were even mad at him. And I'm not kidding, he was probably the sweetest old man you're ever going to meet...would give anyone the shirt off his back, and genuinely didn't mean any of it in a negative way. He was just so saturated in white privilege, that had no idea that most of the things he said were completely inappropriate.
As a Canadian, I always marveled at the idea that he was "one of the nice ones". That if you put him on one end of the racist spectrum, there was an entire range of people out there, that were progressively worse than him. And in US culture...this was just "normal" behavior.
There is certainly a difference between oblivious accidental racism and intentional hatred based racism. Neither are good, but one is certainly a bigger problem.
I felt this way seeing how they treated Obama during his tenure. There was so much bullshit mudslinging, and at one point I said to myself: oh, it's simple racism.
Funny, because my biggest complaint with him was that he didn't address some of the worst abuses of the Bush years.
Dijon Mustard!? A tan suit!? C'mon those are clearly worse than the checks notes dismanteling of democracy that... oh... oh wow there's so much more in these notes... wait a minute, rape? What does Jeffrey Ep... a war with Iran? And he... ALL US allies? Canada?!
White culture in the US is very sensitive to overt racism. they really detest it. but if you let them, with a nice little cloth to hide behind, they will be the most grossly racist people you've ever interacted with. every news story about ICE harming brown children warms their hearts, as long as they don't have to see it or do it, or be told about it in a public place, that would be embarrassing.
Edit: dear white culture enthusiasts, feel free to keep telling on yourself, I'm here for it.
This is so true. I grew up in the deep south and everyone in my family was racist save for one uncle. All the rest, except for my dad believed they weren't racist. My dad was the most honest of the bunch. He was deeply racist and he would talk openly about it with us. We argued for years, but it never got loud.
But the weird thing is my dad could also recognize that racism was used by the Republicans to get people to vote against their own financial interests. And one really weird thing is when my dad died, he had several black and Latino friends who were devastated by his passing. They never knew he was racist. He didn't have a problem being friends with other races he just genuinely bought into white supremacy, but without all the hate. He was a weird guy.
My other family members, however, will insist they aren't racist while simultaneously saying that most Muslims are terrorists, Hispanics are lazy and Blacks are dumb. They vote against "socialist" programs they like because "those minorities and illegals will just use it all up and make us go bankrupt."
I live as close to Canada as I can and wish I realized when I was younger that I should emigrate. Now I'm too old.
Occasionally I will go south for business or to visit and it breaks my heart every time. The racism is so deeply ingrained that most people down there don't see it, but once you do see it, you can't unsee it.
That's also been my experience. Most racists that I am aware of think that being a racist means that you are a "bad person" and since they are not "bad people" they can't possibly be racist.
I would argue that there are many, many people who are racist to their very core, but they're not evil or bad people. You don't have to hate to be a racist. You don't have to murder people or burn crosses on their front yard or hang out with rednecks in white bed sheets to be a racist.
You can have friends of other colors and invite them over for dinner and go to games with them and treat them exactly like you treat every single other person around you and still be racist. You can sleep with people of other colors, spawn children with them, and raise those children in a happy family, and still be racist.
Racism is not an action. It is a belief.
If you believe that people of other colors are different from you in anything other than melanin content and possibly a handful of relatively minor bone structures, then you have at least some racism in you.
But explaining that to your family over Thanksgiving dinner is incredibly difficult and at best unproductive.
Racism is not an action. It is a belief.
I'd say it's a spectrum of belief and behavior or actions. For example, people can do racist things without realizing it.
It has been my experience that the people who are less honest about their racism tend to be the worst.
Being in the south already fucks with your head. I'm convinced that a lot of the hyper religiosity in the white south is overcompensation for the sin of slavery. You can see it in a lot of the laws they make trying to downplay slavery because it hurts the feelings of white kids (and makes white parents uncomfortable). They know it was fucked up but rather than fix the systemic inequities that exist as a holdover of those days, they'd rather keep the inequities, tell themselves racism is long gone(except for those democrats) and pat themselves on the back.
The right is trying to fabricate an Islamo-Bolshevik conspiracy just as they invented a Judeo-Bolshevik conspiracy a century ago.
Let's all take a moment to remember that a lot of racist online accounts were unmasked as bots from Russia and other foreign countries.
Not saying that bigotry doesn't exist IRL in the US (as an American myself I can confirm it absolutely does), but don't judge a country by what its "citizens" are saying online.
To be fair none of the racist fucks i have known ever posted racist shit on the internet, and didn't say anything racist in public, but behind closed doors in a safe suburban home they would tell you what they thought. These are the people who say "it's not polite to discuss politics" if they think you disagree with them, and they all vote, they want the far right world they just know it hurts people and they don't want to get yelled at.
This is very true, BUT also consider that they're enabling and rallying the actual racists here to join together and fight for racism.
Imagine your job security depends on tweeting about the mayor smiling at an event to inflame racist natonalists. The political leadership of the US spends more time on bullshit like this than governing, but the fact that it's effective is the real sad part.
he was attacked by the old guard DNC and the gop at once, using the same tactic. hes too likable to be hated. even the "racist/islamaphobic" comments fall short. i think mamdami has been careful as far as legislation goes.
They can say whatever they want as long as he's the only politician delivering material prosperity to working people. The price of rent and groceries will always be more important than sharia law or whatever nonsense the neoliberals come up with.
We still have sundown towns and cops still pull people over for DWB. Also, the Supreme Court ruled this year that ICE is allowed to uses their racism as justification to stop someone and detain them.
so i would have said that the degree of racism was exaggerated like 10 years ago, but as it turns out, there was more shame involved with being racist but when trump declared he’s bringing open racism back, they all fell out of the wood work like they could finally breath after decades, and they are going to fucking tell you about it.
In my experience, Americans are just full of hate. Just point to someone to hate, give a vague justification, and here you are
The easiest segment of the population to manipulate is racist and so politicians and the media weaponize it to get what they want.
The scary thing is I think Americans are less racist than Europeans and Asians, Americans are just presented with more opportunities to be racist.
This is the world view you get when you consume your current events via ragebait extremism algorithms. I've never met a single person that has shared these views.
Absolutely.
But it's a bit more than that too, because it doesn't just have to be race. It's just differences, and race, religion, gender, regionality, politics and more all play a part in it.
It gets a little confusing for folks because most people (rightfully) aghast at the situation latch onto the issue most close to them as the primary one, but when dealing with bigots, it's usually more of a grab bag.
For example, did people not vote for Kamala because she was black, a woman, or a Democrat? From data it's likely most people's order of disgust went Democrat - > Black - > Woman, but that's definitely not all of them.
For Mamdani, for most people who hate him, it would appear to me that it's because he's Muslim. The fact he's brown too is just icing to them.
It is tribalism. If every person was of white, northern European descent they would still find some angle to split it into "us vs them".
Am European, can confirm. It's then about gypsies and literally anything that differentiates the cultures (Like Jews in the time of/before WW2)
(Tho that's mostly overshadowed by the insane islamophobia everywhere nowadays)
Works amongst us South East Asians too. We generally have a shade of "brown" for skin color. Never stopped us from killing each other.
Conservatism is a bigotry-based ideology. All conservatives believe in a made-up social hierarchy in which they are at the top, with only conservative billionaires above them. This is the mechanism by which all conservatives are bigots.
Conservatives are unable to see any problem with this imaginary hierarchy because conservatives are biologically unable to experience empathy for others. This is why overt racism, sexism and other forms of bigotry come so easily to them.
Conservatism is the very definition of evil. A conservative cannot become normal. They cannot change and become non-evil. Once you understand how truly, deeply evil conservatives are, it becomes immoral to keep any relationship with a conservative. Disown them.
I don’t know what to say: I can’t believe it either. Granted this is from a white male perspective and I realize I’ll never even notice most of it, but wtf?
- Before the current MAGA, I hadn’t seen blatant racism in many years, not even private jokes, we seemed to be making progress on systemic racism, and in general had a more diverse, healthy society (obviously I’m not claiming racism didn’t exist, just that we seemed to be making solid progress, from my privileged viewpoint)
- Now blatant racism is popular? We’re reverting any recent progress? We’re saying the quiet part out loud? Even the worst parts of humanity are encouraged to speak up _and find people not ashamed to support it? And people get elected despite that? And the only federal agency with a massively increased budget seems based mostly on racism?
I used to believe conservatives were just people with different ideas how to make things work better for all of us, but wtf? How did this happen?
conservatives were always racist, they pretended not to be in the past. some just learn how to not fully express it, because thier livelyhoods, jobs or family relationships depend on it. now that trump has been giving the ok to say what you want, they have shown thier true colors. a little manosphere media helps too.
