Trump using rare power to revoke expenditure with bipartisan approval to aid immigrant services

Donald Trump is canceling nearly $1bn in spending approved by Congress, the White House announced on Friday, using a rare and contested power to axe funding for immigrant services and diversity-focused initiatives.

Trump’s office of management and budget described the funding cut as focused on “the most harmful government spending”.

Most of the cuts are focused on services for immigrants, including non-profits that serve refugees and unaccompanied minors accused of being in the country illegally. The administration says the funds are no longer necessary because illegal border crossings have diminished considerably.

He's not using some "rare power." He is violating the Constitution and his oath of office.

This is the kind of editorial complicity that I truly hope historians will be incredibly harsh on.

Like if you're the editor of the guardian (or wapo, or idk a billion other publications), I hope the whole world knows your name as a complicit spineless bitch that was instrumental in perpetuating this bullshit were all living through.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 33 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

The media is owned by… the owner class. Of course they’re complicit. They’re a weapon. It’s like saying the gun was complicit in the murderer’s killings.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

The editor is not "the media,"

A person okayed this for a paycheck.

Someone's kid says "My (mom/dad) is the editor of the guardian's current events section." When asked what their parents does for work.

[–] BooBees@fedinsfw.app 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The biggest criticisms from the left about the guardian and their leadership seems to be their allegiance to liberalism as opposed to progressivism, so a defense and support of capital and the capital class at the expense of actual progress no matter the subject. This instance would also fit into that category if you perceive the Scott Trust group as owned by the ideals of the capital class.

And yet sometimes they are.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Some of us experienced free press and that's our starting context.

[–] madcaesar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

There is still free good press Online. Zateo etc

We need to spread the word and get everyone listening to free news network exactly what Republicans did with morning radio decades ago.

It's not fucking "rare and contested." It's just blatantly violating the Constitution. Congress has control of the budget, not the president. It's his job to execute on the law, not to pick and choose which laws to follow.

[–] sik0fewl@piefed.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

If that were true then the president couldn’t cancel it 🤷‍♂️

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 35 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The president does a lot of things that he isn't allowed until the courts tell him to fuck off. Just wastes valuable judge time having to babysit his every move because he doesn't know what he is doing.

[–] NewSocialWhoDis@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

You are wrong though. He or his handlers know exactly what they're doing. This has been his strategy his entire life. Break the law, then tie up the ensuing suits in the courts so long that he still effectively gets away with it and/or it costs his opposition too much to continue.

He is proof positive that delayed justice is not justice at all.

[–] yeahiknow3@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

If murder is illegal then why are you dead? Boom, checkmate.

[–] Blibly@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, if the authorities don't arrest/charge then functionally yes. This demented old pedo has legit killed hundreds of thousands through inaction during Covid and killed millions globally by letting that dipshit Musk gut USAID. He's a murderer on par with any other fascist but will he see consequences?

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Well, yeah, murder or sexual abuse against minors is illegal, yet you see the rich and powerful engage in these things constantly without consequence.

The law is words on paper, enforcement is what makes law reality, otherwise it's just a suggestion.

If you deny someone their life-saving medication you might go to jail for it. If a rich person does denies life-saving medication to someone because it makes them a few dollars more, they get praised for it.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago

They'll sue, it'll get overturned and the only losers are the taxpayers.

[–] TheMadCodger@piefed.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

Sorry, is this your first visit to this timeline?

[–] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 weeks ago

I was gonna say, does this not constitute a line item veto?

[–] Blibly@lemmy.world 55 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

"rare and constested" does this apply in court if I rob a bank? Like is my claim on the money in the vault a "rare and contested" legal defence?

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If you bought the judge and the jury, then yes. It’s legal.

[–] Blibly@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Great news for when I finally become a billionaire!

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Sure, or some other project that will harm us.

[–] BigPotato@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Sorry, the odds on that bet are so low, after the transaction fees you would be out money - so, just hand yourself a dollar and be done with it.

Ah, Susan Collins trying to get her name out there in a better way. Too late, Susan!

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Her issue was Abortion, and she blew it. Unforgiveable. No half-assed attempt at morality is going to earn her a second chance. Besides, nobody in Maine cares about immigration, she was just grasping at the first straw she could.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

What a chickenshit sane-washing headline. Shame on you, Guardian.

[–] zoloftt@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Genuine question. What headline would you have chosen?

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

Trump Derelicts Duty and Fails to Dispense Funds as Legally Appropriated

[–] antiphon@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I desperately hope that a deathly illness happens to Trump. I'm so fucking tired of him.

[–] TaterTurnipTulip@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I vote for Ebola, Marburg, or rabies. Those are some terrible ways to go.

I've been hoping for a lightning strike on the golf course.

Make damn sure those evangelical Christian supporters see exactly what their God's opinion of Trump was...

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

And what will he do with the billion dollars?

[–] MIDItheKID@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Give it to Isreal.
