Thanks to u/nul9o9@lemmy.dbzer0.com for turning me on to Ship of Harkinian. It's my opinion after messing with it for a half hour that this is THE way to experience OoT again.

Here's a link to their comment if you'd like to upvote it.

"Hey, Mom. Can we have OoT?"

"We already have OoT at home!"

The OoT at home:

I've been running Ocarina when I can. I just completed the Water Temple. All I need now are the Fire and Shadow Medallions, then I can whack Ganondorf.

I don't even have a Switch 2, and I'm not buying it just to be sold nostalgia I can already relive with stuff I've had for like 20 years. That said, I am running it on Gopher64 this time around.

Dude, I wish I could launch this to the top of the thread. I just set it up, and it's so much snappier than running on emulator.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago

so much snappier than running on emulator.

Yep, that's because it's a decompilation of the original game's code under the hood, which was then recompiled as a native PC application.

Meaning Nintendo can't do shit about it, unless HarbourMasters decides to start making charging for their PC ports?

[–] nul9o9@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I love it! 60fps, high quality textures, and quality of life options make it feel so much better to play.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I'm already pretty blown away at widescreen support. I never thought I'd get to play '98 OoT in widescreen.

[–] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

If you haven't already, grab a hi res texture pack. OoT in 2k at 200fps is awesome.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Okay, fine! If you're gonna twist my arm about it lol

If you're stuck, I have an ancient tome that may be of assistance.

[–] toxicbubble@lemmy.world 32 points 4 days ago (2 children)

switch 1 is the last nintendo platform I'll support. i hope they improve in the future, but console exclusivity is a way of the past

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago

I don't mind console exclusivity if the console were unique in some way, and the exclusive games made use of that feature.

Nintendo games in the past did this quite well. Many games I've played on the DS just wouldn't work or feel the same way with traditional input.

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago

Nintendo's online stuff has always been junky and I don't love the move to key carts.

[–] Beth@piefed.social 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That’s okay, no one is making you. Enjoyment is not based on what everyone else thinks! I personally cannot wait to play it. Have fun, it’s a great game!

[–] CaptainMan251@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

This is what I have to tell myself every time I go into a final fantasy vii forum.

Hey! Listen!

I've seen some YouTubers like Linkus and PointCrow do randomizers before, and I've genuinely considered it a number of times. There are some of the glitches I'm having trouble nailing. Like the hook shot jump off Dampe's hut to access Shadow Temple early.

But I don't think I ever considered that there would be difficulty levels on these lol I never tried one because I didn't want to get super far into a run and lose it to a glitch that I just don't have the time to master. But knowing that there can be easier rolls set up makes me a bit more comfortable with the idea.

I absolutely love playing oot randomizers, and I actually just beat my first Dark Soul 3 rando this week. If the tricks and glitches are scaring you off you can leave the "Enable Tricks" section like it is and you shouldn't need to do any crazy things to get to the end. I'd also recommend getting a tracker, linked below. I'd recommend the EmoTracker map, you click on the items you have and the map updates to show what is available. Green means you have everything available to finish a dungeon or get a chest, yellow means it'll need an easy glitch or trick, orange for a more difficult glitch, and red is unavailable at the moment. They are super useful if you aren't sure where to go or if you forget about a single odd chest that could have what you need.

If you do try a rando in the future I hope you enjoy it!

[–] bigmclargehuge@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago

Oh yea dude in that case the one linked above is for you! They have easy seeds that basically let you switch things up in a digestible and fun fashion.

I’m pleased to inform you that I will be buying OoT remake! I do have a NS2 and I will be happy to buy nostalgia.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's been a couple Nintendo Switch 2 games that I've wanted to play but haven't been console sellers for me yet. OoT Remake is finally it, and the bonus is there's now enough other games I want to play that it won't just be a single game console haha.

[–] mursejoy@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

As a switch 2 owner I’ve been eating GOOD. I think it’s the console with the best exclusives by far.

[–] garretble@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I just ticked over the 20 hour mark in the latest Fire Emblem, and I’m like, “Yeah this is real good.”

Im pleased to inform you that I will be playing OoT Remake while not supporting Nintendo who are notorious for being absolute assholes to all gamers. I'm also saving my money by not buying a device that locks me into their pay for play platform.

Am I crossing over into another timeline or haven't they already remade an Occarina of Time before?

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 30 points 4 days ago (2 children)

They did for the 3DS. They'll release these every 10-15 years until millenials are dead.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Todd Howard: Every 10-15 years? Those are rookie numbers!

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 7 points 4 days ago

Dude released the same game for so long theres now like 4 slopperscrolls on the steam store.

I think video game remakes will be a thing long after millenials are gone, just like movie remakes. And I bet most of them will be disappointing, with the occasional faithful or even surpassing remake, just like with movies.

It would be cool to chart the distance in time between the original video game and all remakes. It'd be cool to see which games get evergreen remakes, and which go through unpopular periods before a renaissance. People will always remake the classics, but I bet most remakes will go in a cyclic fashion of cashing in on middle-aged nostalgia.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 6 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I specifically meant OoT. Just like you dont see Gilligan's Isle remakes anymore.

[–] queerlilhayseed@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh, I see what you mean. I wonder when the last OoT remake will be. They just remade Nosferatu 100 years later. I could see it happening.

Not really a remake, but there's a port with a few tweaks called "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest" for the GameCube.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

It's also included on the Collector's Edition on GameCube, along with Majora's Mask, the original Legend of Zelda, and Zelda II.

I am also not buying the remake, but honestly mostly because I'm an achievement whore. SoH doesn't support RetroAchevements though, but I'm ok being a purist.

I hear 2 Ship 2 Harkinian wasn't nearly as successful

[–] Banrik@fedia.io 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Successful? Wdym? It's a well made pc port of majoras mask.

[–] Neomega@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

No idea what that means. 2ship is the best way for anyone that isn't a speed runner to play Majora's mask.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's okay.

I'm going to purchase the Fable remake when it drops.

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's not a remake, it's a reboot. They're starting from near the beginning of the timeline again, but it's not the same story or same company. I'm genuinely excited from gameplay trailers.

Honestly Fable was getting a tad messy by the third game, starting over from scratch but using the original as a framework is probably the only way to do it. I feel like if Bethesda were to do a remake of any of the pre Morrowind games it'd be the same way, also I really wish they would remake Redguard because its such a cool game idea wrapped in a jank fest of an engine which funfact is technically 2d fucken Bethesda black magic.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Personally I can't wait for the OoT remake to inevitably get its own Ship. It might take 20 years, but I'm willing to wait that long to finally be able to play the definitive version of OoT.

[–] ergonomic_importer@piefed.ca 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I've been running Ocarina when I can. I just completed the Water Temple. All I need now are the Fire and Shadow Medallions, then I can whack Ganondorf.

Are you doing a randomizer? Three hearts after mirror shield which is an item you get in the last dungeon and still needing the fire medallion is an interesting way to play the vanilla game

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Nope, I'm running vanilla. I'm experimenting with what you can do out of order. There's nothing stopping you from just leaving the Water Temple to do Spirit Temple after you get the longshot. I'm sure there's a way to get there without the longshot too.

I'm also doing a 3 heart run because OoT is actually pretty easy. There does come a point where you have to start doing boss fights perfectly because every hit is OHKO. I've finished a run like this before. But now that I know about Ship, I'm gonna turn the damage multipliers way up and give myself a reason to actually get hearts.
