This is a whole enshitification process right there. After a few months Deezer will start removing content that you will have access to over the winamp subscription, or winamp will pull an Amazon and insert ads into the paid subscription, call it basic subscription, and ask for more money for premium without ads.

Though lately I just give the URL to an AI to read and call out red flags. Sometimes there's an email address buried in the legalese to opt out of data sharing (and the LLM can draft an email to copy-paste). Though, at that point, I've usually lost too much trust in the service and find alternatives.

I've been looking for a solid DAP for my car playing and afternoon walks, bit those things, at least the good ones, are super expensive. Still, better than paying for subscriptions though.

It's dead already, then. WinAmp's heritage was providing a free audio player. I was looking forward to a refreshed build to test out, but I won't pay for it.
There are a dozen better, free, maintained, and actively developed players out there. This is less than too little, and far too late. Those of us who used winamp back when it was still activly developed will continue to have nostalgia for it, but I bet it will be DOA to most of the target audience.
I've only kept up on news for it because I was hoping it would be reborn true to itself. I have zero interest in it as a subscription model.
it appears to be just an added optional feature, a winamp-branded deezer subscription and client, with the traditional local play and customization and what-not still part of the 'free' program (presumably.. details are scarce).
but.. i left winamp years ago. i won't go back. i have playlists sorted and can just use vlc these days. idc about customizing or visualizations and that shit. i just want a player to sit in the background and do its thing. there's dozens of acceptable programs without a subscription sales pitch built in.

It sounds like the local playback is the "optional" feature. That's still gonna be a no, at least for me. Fpr Hifi, I'll stick with FooBar2k, or something that is a proper hi-res FLAC player first and has bolt-ons/plugins second. The same article also links to another, they actually already released a new build of classic winamp a few years ago.

So, basically a nostalgic skin for Deezer.
And Deezer is owned by a Russian Oligarch who was personally sanctioned by Ukraine for profiting off of the war.

Yeah, pissed me off when another lemming informed me cos I had left Spotify for deezer because Spotify basically joined the evil big tech club.
Only one that doesn't seemed to have evil ownership is qobuz... Which I have now, but I hate it.
I don't hit the high seas myself, but sometimes it sounds like the only sane choice. ☠️

These owners are just whatever lawyers have gotten ahold of the WinAMP trademark.
Anybody remember when they attempted to push out the source code for WinAMP on GitHub and failed miserably? Or included NFTs?
Last time I heard about a Winamp reboot it was a Bandcamp ripoff with added cryptoslop. While this seems marginally better it's still pretty disappointing.
Deezer seems alright as a streaming service, though, and they're French so there's that.
I just realized it doesn't even need to be reborn to "take on streaming." Y'all with home servers and a big music collection can just start hosting Shoutcasts again and we can use the OG Winamp to stream. :P
I don't understand the point of this. Strawberry Player exists. Shortwave exists. I miss the old Zune Player. Mais, c'est la vie, non?
It's probably just nostalgia, but honestly it never hurts to have more choice.
We have too many companies that keep consolidating and leaving users with little or no alternative for products and or software.

I have the feeling the new version's tagline will be something along the lines of
"WINAMP, IT REALLY SUCKS THE LLAMA'S CORPORATE COCK!"
After the "open source" fakeout that was nothing more than them trying to get free work without actually opening the source code for anyone to use, Winamp and Llamasoft or whatever their name is can get bent by an elephant.
I won't even use an old copy in Wine at this point. They fucked up repeatedly and now nostalgia isn't what it used to be. Get fucked, losers of Winamp.

Winamp isn't even good. There are much better media players. Use Strawberry.

I liked Winamp too. It hasn't aged well. I'm amazed people use VLC for music. I know you can, but there's better software out there.
