Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

There's no single point -- it's a gradual process.

This suggests the existence of the poop event horizon. Science totally rocks man.

[–] rmuk@feddit.uk 7 points 2 weeks ago

Rocks big part of science. But science not totally rocks. Science more than rocks.

Since you can empty your stomach back up, I guess the event horizon for food is after the stomach. After that the only way out is down.

Umm no? Have you never vomited? I'm not sure I'd call that "food". I guess, maybe, it's still food after you've finished chewing it; you could spit it out into your hand instead of swallowing, and someone else could choke it down. But it stops being food long before it hits the intestines. At some point when it starts mixing with stomach acid, probably.

Some dogs eat shit (literally)

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

See, still food.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I have a dog that did that until the older dog died. Didn't like her own product I guess.

I'm in a silent study room full of other students and you're making me laugh uncontrollably, thanks

And so do some humans. I guess this kinda stretches the definition of food….

It’s called chyme from the moment it’s swallowed

[–] Azzu@leminal.space 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

So you're saying the point is somewhere in the esophagus?

[–] fastfinge@rblind.com 3 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

The point when it goes from food to vomit, yeah. I’m not sure when it goes from puke to poop, though. Maybe that happens in the intestines?

I'm from Texas and used to hate Oklahoma, because I was taught that was correct. I've since learned that's essentially the poop calling the turd a piece of shit, but that's beside the point. When I lived outside of Dallas, I once learned that I was less than an hour from Oklahoma. At that age, I'd never driven outside of Texas, and decided to check something off the "things I've done" list.

When I neared the border, I hesitated and asked myself if I really wanted my first out-of-state driving experience to be in Oklahoma. So, I turned around and drove back.

The point is, there's still a delineation that determines when a person is someone who's only driven in Texas vs someone who's also driven in Oklahoma. The same kind of line is what's being proposed by SatansMaggotyCumFart's Law. Even if I covered myself in stomach acid, I could still identify as someone who has only ever driven in Texas, even if I looked and smelled like vomit.

As further evidence supporting my incredibly intelligible argument, the beloved founder of Globo Gym once noted:

in some cultures, they only eat vomit.

In conclusion, I took more time writing this comment than I should have, and I'm sorry if you read it.

Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.

Fun fact: some people stop it near the top or middle, and alter nature's plumbing

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 15 points 2 weeks ago

That point is much closer to your mouth than it is the other end of the system.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 12 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, it's called the pyloric sphincter.

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 weeks ago

More like a slush of gastric acid and whatever you ate, but in principle, I agree. :)

If you divide a woman in half horizontally one side has poop and the other side has boob and both are plaindromes. Also you will go to jail.

Reminds me of philosophical question of a boy eating an apple: at what point does it cease to be the apple and become the boy? I suppose this is a similar question: at what point does it cease to be an apple and become a turd?

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

At what point does a boy become a turd?

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Usually about 11 or 12.

[–] deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's like a Food of Theseus.

Bit by bit the food is replaced with a bit of poop, at which point does it cease being food?

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

No that's mixing metaphors in a pretty crazy way.

This is more like the Sorites Food

If you eat Taco Bell, it goes in and comes out exactly the same. I honestly don't know how they manage to keep collecting, processing, and serving the same diarrhea since 1962, but it's no wonder they'll win the Franchise Wars.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I don't think you can call what's in your intestines food, once it leaves the stomach. The stomachs job is kind of to make it not food anymore
