Lots of very important things, but mostly the smoking.
Also having kids.
true. i saw some people who were 80 and looked like 250. like walking corpses. incredible. probably waaay too many sunburns, etc.
Yes, but the hair loss is real.
ever since i found out about this a few years ago i'm telling everyone i meet: there's fantastic medication (finasteride) against hair loss, and it even causes side effects! such as mild boob growth
note that only some meds to that, while others do not.
yes the thing that changed was lead posioning from gas and chain smoking cigs starting at 12
Also pesticides were even more unregulated than they are now. Remember how they just sprayed DDT everywhere in the 40's till the 70's. Even on directly on people. Shit had multigenerational consequences, even grandchildren of people who had a high exposure to that stuff are being affected.
Recently watched The Seven Year Itch (1955) and the man claims to be 37. He looks like a young 50. Cigarettes.
Just watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Nicholson was 38 during filming. I thought he looked 50 too.

Nah he looks 38 lol
No, he definitely looks well into 45+
I’m 38. He does not look 38.
Well he doesn't look 50 that's for sure. His hairline isn't great, but people in their 20s can have a fucked up hairline.
He does. Its just the hairstyle
And the creases.
You mean wrinkles?
Yep. English and their 100 case-dependent meanings.
I apologize lol
In addition to people not smoking anymore, direct Sun exposure has dropped dramatically too.
I'm 40 and I look like the second picture
I have the body of the left but the clothing of the right.
The gabagool has a hold on you
There was a real missed opportunity to have a picture of Jason Alexander (who was in his 30's during most of Seinfeld's production) instead of James Gandolfini.
Still true tho
Yep, It's not only cigarettes, but air pollution too.
Wasn't Tony in his 40's?
Please say Tony was in his 40's!!!
George Costanza was in his 30s throughout the run of seinfeld
Tony was 41 per the pilot script but the actor was 38.
AJ is now 41 in 2026.
When I was in my twenties people thought I looked older. Now I'm in my fifties, and people think I look much younger.
Yeah, around that age is when the accumulated damage of poor choices start becoming more evident, IMHO.
I have a friend who doesn't sleep, has ADHD, drinks and smokes a lot, uses vyvanse, and he still looks fine as fuck, despite being a little bit overweight. He's on his late 30s though, good appereance genes for sure.
I guess I'm just perpetually middle-aged looking. Mainly, I've gained belly girth, and lost hair, but my skin's still pretty good because, despite using nothing but soap on it, I stay out of the sun.
This is the best news I've gotten all week. I look like a less balding 90s 30. That's great for being 45.
Does anyone else tell themselves all the other dads they meet are actually much younger than you?
My wife and I were watching an episode of Frasier and he states that he’s 38 years old at one point. We were both like YEAH FUCKIN RIGHT. I’m 45 and look closer to the person on the right, but I also don’t give a shit about “dress your age” nonsense. I’m not going to willingly age myself up.
Great example of how stress ages you
Not stress, smoking, drinking and no sunscreen does that to you.
I don’t think stress is any less, but actually more than in the 90’s
