Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

Honestly, it's a ship collectathon.

STO's game engine is the same one used by other tps mmos like Champions Online. The spaceship bits are fun, but the away missions are stuck in 2000s mmo land and need a revamp.

I played in the beta (2012??) and even then it felt dated. WoW was right there, absolutely slaying, and all they had to do was copy it... but instead we get something that looks more like Shadowbane (nerd points if you know what that is without googling).

By "new trek" you mean everything TNG and after, right?

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 10 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

I've always meant to play it. Is it any good?

It is free and the stories are written pretty well. Gameplay is okay, but it is free entertainment. When I hit the end game i bought a ship for $20 USD, I got my monies worth.

Sort of. Lots of interesting stories. I really love the ship-based combat but dread the ground-based. It’s my favorite Star Trek game.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I play too, and concur with your assessment.

It's a little bit of a shame because the ground combat does have some interesting mechanics (expose/exploit, for instance), but it's just a little too RPG-like and laggy to work well as a first-person shooter.

Pro-tip: prioritize ground speed for your endeavour rewards because the faster you run the quicker you can complete ground daily TFOs.

Prioritizing movespeed is like the secret weapon of most games like this.

Wait, better than either Armada and Elite Force?

It tried to capture the feeling of missions from some of the older Star Trek games, but it being an MMO kind of ruined that for me. Maybe it's better now with more improvements and less people running through the newbie areas like in the first days, but it threw me off. Ship parts were the best. Honestly I was looking for an online version of Starfleet Command, which even SFO didn't quite have the nuances of.

There's a lot of jank and mmo monetization, the ground combat is kinda boring, but the rest flying around the universe doing missions feels like show episodes, picking and outfitting ships and space combat was interesting, I though was pretty fun

I still feel like the ground combat was an after thought added to pad the game. I stopped playing it over a year ago and even then it still felt janky

I feel your pain, is the exact same with Lord of the Rings online. People arguing over the Rings of Power show or if they should boycott The Hunt For Gollum and I'm like, why will nobody come role play running a smithy in the Shire with me?

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 5 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

will nobody come role play running a smithy in the Shire with me?

...is what I got from that. And I'm kinda tempted.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 1 points 57 minutes ago

If you've never tried the game it's great. It definitely shows it's she age and isn't perfect but there's a lot of love and charm in it. I don't actually have time to play these days but if you do I highly recommend trying. It's still being developed and there's a passionate fanbase still.

No, but I'll join your bard troupe.

Dude a power rangers MMO could be dope if done right.

I tried, and found MMO is not my genre. LotRO in particular is waaaay too grindy for my ADHD brain ("Please, kill 15 of this, 18 of this and 27 of that for the 149th time!" - boooring).
I liked the campaigns of SWTOR, and I got my two Live Service Games, but LotRO lost me in multiple attempts and when I tried STO it just didn't catch me from the start.

I eventually stopped about a year ago when they brought back Tzenkethi and dropping some kind of protomatter bomb on a borg cube. Were any of the seasons after that worthwhile?

I recently saw a teaser for the newest release featuring Spocks from SNW, TOS & TUC-era talking with each other..
