Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

As always, stay tuned here on !comicstrips@lemmy.world for a slow trickle out of Jucika comics, but if you want to find more, here’s a good post with a large collection that /u/JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social posted last year: https://piefed.social/post/1258520

The flag code may actually mean something, but it's a bit hard to interpret. The middle flag is "you are in danger" which certainly fits the circumstances, but the others are a little harder to interpret, as is Jucika's response. Her shorts, for example, could be interpreted as "I'm carrying explosives", which probably isn't what she's going for.

Best I can figure (using INTERCO):

The ship is saying “I am operating astern propulsion, you are in danger, pilot aboard.”

Jucika is saying, “carrying dangerous goods, requesting to enter port, message received.”

Almost as if they’re just flirting with each other.

I had to use deduction to figure out the ship’s uncolored flag. Nothing else made sense, and jucika’s polka dots which only vaguely resembles an answering pennant.

The top flag may be a blue Peter, but I think the slowing to a stop interpretation makes more sense. I'll bet you a nickel this strip is printed on newsprint using a limited color process that can't reproduce blue, so we may never know. (I imagine if they could it would have been used in the water at least a little bit.) That was extremely popular in the '60s and '70s to keep costs down, and there are tons of ads out there from those eras designed around one or two color printing. I also had a pile of children's books from back when which did the same and forced the authors/artists to make some... strange... color choices and omissions.

The registration is also exceptionally awful here and reveals that they're apparently only using black, magenta, and yellow. I imagine Jucika's kayak is actually meant to be red, and it would be except for the registration miss:

That's also why the polka dots are falling off of the fabric...

Both you and @radix@lemmy.world came to the same conclusion I did that "operating astern" might mean "we are slowing down" but the impression I got from Wikipedia was that flag was for literally travelling backwards, and the ship is clearly not doing that.

Interpretation 2 is that the first flag is the blue Peter referring to obstruction (usually fishing nets) and it is instead a reference to Jucika herself, kind of a "hey, you, the thing in our way".

Interpretation 3 is the in-port meaning of the same flag, which is "come aboard"

The third flag about having a pilot aboard is also a little weird and I can't be sure whether he's saying the ship has crew or whether they're asking if she needs guidance back to shore.

Still fairly mystified by Jucika, especially the spotted neckerchief. Spots don't seem to be a good match to anything.

... though I do like the idea that the shorts mean she might be calling herself a firecracker.

Maybe she means her dynamite tits.

(comment to be taken with consideration for the time period)

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

Since the flag is her shorts, it's her *dynamite" ass, no?

I did some research and an upright oar means "I'm down to clown" in swinger circles

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

I was also wondering if there was a hidden joke there.

[–] radix@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

I also looked this up. The top flag is non-standard, but that general shape exists with either the inside or outside square colored blue. If we choose to interpret this as a small blue square on a white background, it means something like "I'm slowing down," which would also fit.

Bit of a stretch, but it's the closest to making sense.

She is about to get hit by that ship and probably die!
