I’m sorry, can anyone remind me of the joke without forcing me to rewatch this at 8:33am?
In the movie, Star Trek:Generations, some of the old commmand crew come to see the launch of the Enterprise-1701-B, it is an Excelsior class modified and most of the part aren't available for said launch, and the media are reporting everything live. The most memorable line for the unfortunate captain is, "It will be installed Tuesday..."
The ship and crew were incomplete but they wanted to do a quick christening and publicity tour for media and some dignitaries (Kirk, Chekov and Scotty). The idea was to do a quick trip around the block within Sol then finish within the next couple days (torpedoes, tractor beam, final crew staffing).
The common interpretation of that scene was that he was grossly inexperienced and unfit to captain a ship, let alone the Enterprise (beta canon says he was spoonfed the posting because his dad was a well respected ranking admiral). My headcanon is more so that he knew how ill-prepared the ship was to mount a rescue, let alone a dangerous one, especially with civilians and "celebrities" on board.
You forgot the most important thing. The half-finished 1701-B was the ONLY ship nearby that could answer the distress call. As usual, even at Sol.
That part always gets me. I can try to handwave some of it away as the bulk of the ships in and around Sol would be still under construction or otherwise in repair, cargo ships or puddle jumpers.

He knew, he even tried to get another ship to respond, acknowledging the situation. He's just following orders for this trip around the block, and could have even argued against them in private.
This dangerous energy ribbon comes by every 37 years, very close to Earth, but no one knew it was due for a visit? There are so many issues with that entire plot point, which others have pointed out, in part. I don't have a problem with the overall concept - it's sci-fi, after all - but the issues with how Kirk ends up in the Nexus are plentiful.
...but we haven't heard about the recurring energy ribbbon...let's talk about script continuity /s i am soooooo kidding!

Imagine 1967. A young science fiction fan was restricted to the occasional 'Twilight Zone' rerun on TV and 'War Of The Worlds' at the school library. And then...
"You're the only ship in the sector..."
So you're saying there will be no 60th Anniversary today .... and that a a deranged El-Aurian scientist, will launch a trilithium weapon as an explosive agent into our sun, stopping all nuclear fusion within the star, leading to an instant supernova that will cause massive gravitational disturbances that will alter the trajectory of a nearby energy ribbon to pass over our planet, and in the powerful gravimetric field emanating from the trailing edge of the energy ribbon, send this psychotic scholarly experimentalist into an extra-dimensional Heaven-like realm in which one's thoughts and desires shape reality while leaving behind our homeworld to be destroyed by the rapid expansion of our local star.
I'd say we had a good run.

Theaters are playing original movies now.
I saw. Each paired with an episode from TAS. Wish they'd include an intermission, then I might be more tempted.
Cinemark did when I went to Wrath of Khan over the weekend. Episode, quick intermission with enough time for bathroom and snacks, then the film.
Guessing there was an intro bit, the episode, then intermission? So, that covers maybe 30 minutes, short break, then roughly 2 hour movie. Would prefer a more balanced approach, but it's better than nothing for 3ish hours straight.
That about sums it up, minus much of an intro. It was just straight into it. Space Seed is about 50 minutes long, WoK runs another two hours. Definitely not the best split, but it’s manageable.
