Got hooked on Greek frappes (lemmy.world)

Went to greece a while ago and tried a bunch of coffee there. Did a food tour and was discussing coffee with the tour guide. Told her I really liked their frappes and she informed me that it's an old drink and the only people she knows who drinks them are older people like her parents 💀.

Anyways I didn't let that discourage me from learning how to make them at home after our trip and its entered my rotation of coffee I drink.

They are so easy to make. Takes about 1 minute per drink.

Instructions I use:

  1. Add in instant coffee and water (according to the instructions in the instant coffee). Note that I think traditional Greek frappes use nescafe.
  2. Add liquid sugar if you want.
  3. Blend (I use an immersion blender directly in the serving cup/mug)
  4. Add ice and milk.
  5. Serve.

When I make this I also add the ice before blending but I think its more proper to add the ice after.

Lots more instant drinkers than I thought we’d have. No disrespect! Just not my thing. However if you’re going to drink instant, please avoid Nescafé as they’re owned by Nestlé. Fuck Nestlé.

To be fair, this isn't the only thing I drink but I do make it occasionally. I usually bounce between fresh ground drip, cold brew and greek frappes these days.

This is definitely the most interesting drink of the three I think.

I never got into cold brew. A friend of mine tried to get me hooked on it but it just tastes like fridge to me. And I’m usually pretty good at keeping my fridge clean. I keep a water jug in my fridge and that never tastes off, but cold brew does for some reason. Not sure why.

Do you brew it in thd fridge? I would highly recommend against that. Mix your prefered ratio in a French Press (metal is best here), let it sit covered (but not with the filter) on the counter, away from heat and sun for 10-14 hours. Press the filter down and filter it into a glass container with a screw top. Then place that in the fridge until it's cold. If it's brewed in the fridge, it'll taste like coffee-flavored fridge water. Keep in mind, however, that cold brew is not for everyone, and you might still dislike it, and that's ok.

I’ll probably give that a try at some point. I want to give cold brew a good chance, I just haven’t yet I guess. I’ll try your method next.

You don't have to make it in your fridge. You can let it sit on the counter as well if you want to try it again. I do think you need a good cold brew bean though. I think the best beans for drip and the best for cold brew are not the same. You will need to experiment a bit.

Fair. I could try that. I do also have a beer fridge I could try using too. I’ve also heard cold drip or ice drip is a bit different but still a cold brewing method. I’d consider that as well.

I love iced coffee, so it’s not about not liking cold coffee. I just haven’t been able to enjoy cold brew specifically before. I’m not against trying it again though.

I have a metal coffee screen "filter" that I bought some years ago that screws onto a nalgene water bottle, then the lid screws on top of that. I put a bunch of coffee grounds and water in, then shake the bottle to mix. Allow to sit overnight up to a day, and our out the coffee.
That keeps it cold without refrigerator funk. You could do the same principle with a jar and a v60 or just a drip filter basket.

You can add normal sugar and blend it as well. You should try with concentrated (I think that is how it is called?) milk.

Also, fuck nestle, use any other brand.

Same as "beat coffee" in Punjab/ India! I'm guessing the name comes from "beating" the coffee since there were no immersion blenders back in the day. Mom would take a spoon of coffee and a spoon of water and vigorously mix it in a steel container. Then top with milk and ice.

Greek American reporting. Yes its for old people. When I was a kid visiting Greece in the 90s when the locals would still take naps in the afternoon to beat the heat, first thing they would do at 3pm when they woke is drink a frapee and smoke a cigarette. Often at the local cafe chatting with other villagers. Always Nescafe because of hyper aggressive marketing. Those days are gone, hardly anyone still even takes a siesta anymore. Its all very globalized, homogeneous.

Yeah I know my tour guide was right. However I do enjoy how they taste for what ever reason so i will continue to make them from time to time. Of course using non-Nescafe instant coffee though.

I will have to give it a shot for the first time in 20 years, I used to enjoy them. I have Starbucks instant coffee and its half decent. Maybe toss it in my Vitamix and see how it goes! Thanks for the nostalgia!

The recipe you wrote and the picture is similar but different color from the original. The original recipe after you blend it in the mixer, you fill it up with water and then add milk in the end.

I added milk in the end in the photo. The foam is from blending the instant coffee (and also the blended ice).

What instant do you use? My parents use Nescafe, and I've trying to get them off that terrorcompany for years.

I think I saw that at the international store in the Asian section the other day. Japanese, iirc? Anyway. Is it good? It wasn't cheap lol

It's good if you can get it somewhat cheap. I wouldn't pay more than $10 USD for it. I bought it on sale from a Japanese goods store.

I don't remember how much they were selling it, but I do remember thinking it was expensive lol I'll see if I can find if for cheap the next time I make it into town.
