Went to greece a while ago and tried a bunch of coffee there. Did a food tour and was discussing coffee with the tour guide. Told her I really liked their frappes and she informed me that it's an old drink and the only people she knows who drinks them are older people like her parents ๐.
Anyways I didn't let that discourage me from learning how to make them at home after our trip and its entered my rotation of coffee I drink.
They are so easy to make. Takes about 1 minute per drink.
Instructions I use:
- Add in instant coffee and water (according to the instructions in the instant coffee). Note that I think traditional Greek frappes use nescafe.
- Add liquid sugar if you want.
- Blend (I use an immersion blender directly in the serving cup/mug)
- Add ice and milk.
- Serve.
When I make this I also add the ice before blending but I think its more proper to add the ice after.
Greek American reporting. Yes its for old people. When I was a kid visiting Greece in the 90s when the locals would still take naps in the afternoon to beat the heat, first thing they would do at 3pm when they woke is drink a frapee and smoke a cigarette. Often at the local cafe chatting with other villagers. Always Nescafe because of hyper aggressive marketing. Those days are gone, hardly anyone still even takes a siesta anymore. Its all very globalized, homogeneous.
Yeah I know my tour guide was right. However I do enjoy how they taste for what ever reason so i will continue to make them from time to time. Of course using non-Nescafe instant coffee though.
I will have to give it a shot for the first time in 20 years, I used to enjoy them. I have Starbucks instant coffee and its half decent. Maybe toss it in my Vitamix and see how it goes! Thanks for the nostalgia!
