This is another reason why I'm trying to move away from anything Google. They have a pretty good track record of shutting things down

[–] grandel@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Pretty good? It seems like it's their business modell.

Devil's (literally) advocate: they also have released a ton of services. Having said that, I still miss Inbox (the alternative gmail app/frontend)

At this point they can just shut down Google. Oh well. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Nice! Had no idea wtf qgis was and figured it was a username or some tangentially related software (and possibly paid)

Horrible text colour choice tbf

[–] grue@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago

The text color wasn't a choice; it was just a consequence of putting the preexisting QGIS logo over the preexisting meme background.

The meme maker should've layered a shadow or contrasting-color rectangle under it.

QGIS logo:

I am not color blind, but holy shit was that easy to miss.

Is there a plug in for 3d terrain / buildings yet?

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Yeah that's the only part of GEarth I really care about.

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

Okay but I'm pronouncing it "Cue-Jizz", solely because pronouncing Arc-Jizz that way royally annoys my Earth Science major wife. XD

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Actually, I was going to download this yesterday.

I need a good app to create gpx files for hiking..

While I am loathe to recommend a non-FOSS option, I have been really happy with GaiaGPS.

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Yeah.. I am also aware of Captopo too.. GaiaGPS is one I looked at, and FarOut (based on info from Maddie and Tom: https://theadventuregene.com/australian-alps-walking-track/#navigation ) .

Google Earth Pro was 100% free for a while though, and I was more familiar with it. I used a OSM mapping layer on top

[–] Slatlun@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

QGIS is what the meme is about. I didn't see it when I looked either

[–] auzy1@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah.. When you mentioned, it makes sense now.

Remember to never try any new Google products for at least five years to see if they’re serious about it

[–] geomela@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Remember never any Google products?

Edit: Now I see it. 'Remember, never any Google products'. I spent ages and just couldn't see what you meant. 🤦

I'm still pissed about how they removed recursive calling from hey google actions

It was neat, the few times i tried it out 10 years back. But Osmand is more performant on the phone than Earth was on desktop and has better features.

Will my flatpak app just stop working?

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)
