Battlefield 6 unexpectedly removed fan-favorite game modes, such as King of the Hill, Squad Deathmatch, and Rush. This sparked anger in the community because players could no longer access modes that they'd consistently returned to in the history of the franchise. ExplorEverythingOnce, a particularly disgruntled fan, decided they’d had enough and took it up with Steam support to ask for a refund.

In the refund request, they pointed out that several modes shown as available on the Battlefield website were no longer listed on the Community Broadcast page and had been removed without notice. Despite having played Battlefield 6 for over 470 hours since launch day, the support agent agreed that it “wasn’t right” and refunded the game in its entirety, amounting to the $109.24 that they paid on launch day for Battlefield 6 Phantom Edition. ExplorEverythingOnce added a screenshot of their Steam purchase history as proof of the refund. “Battlefield Studios, you don’t get to remove the games I play and still keep my money,” the unhappy customer said triumphantly at the end of their post.

Because these claims rely on hearsay and a screenshot, there is no way to confirm how true they are. It is strange that Steam would grant this refund request, considering that Battlefield Studios made a statement about the recently vaulted game modes. Some game modes are more popular than others, which leads to inactive servers. To combat this, the devs temporarily removed game modes and put them on a weekly rotation. This decision was made to incentivize players to try different modes and increase active players to prevent dead servers.

The refund was a permanent solution to a temporary situation, and it might have just led to something much bigger. Considering that the post got a lot of impressions within a few days, other displeased players might just flood Steam support with similar refund requests — whether to return Battlefield 6 or any other game.

Dangerous to whom, corpos that arbitrarily take back stuff you already bought?

[–] GoebbelsDeezNuts@hexbear.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah I honestly fail to see the issue here.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 36 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Because these claims rely on hearsay and a screenshot,

motherfucker you literally relayed how he used the publisher's own documentation of their product to argue that this was no longer the title he had paid over 100 dollars for

[–] Tabitha@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I assume they meant the claim that the user successfully got a 6 year post partem refund.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, I doubt it's real because of that. With 470 hours played they'd just say "no". I failed to get a refund for a game that I had 0 hours in that wouldn't even launch on my PC because I waited too long after buying it.

Good. If you change a game after releasing it, the players should be able to get a refund if they don't like the game.

I fail to see the problem that this article is trying to get me to worry about.

[–] nfreak@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 weeks ago

Looking back I'd love to get refunds for practically every Destiny 2 expansion considering how much they kept fucking that game up more and more with every update

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's a terrible standard to set and not necessary for defending refunding in this case specifically.

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Imagining chuds doing this every time a black character gets added in a fighting game.

Maybe this will kill games getting endless updates and live service games finally at least.

[–] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

there's room for discretion here, adding a character is almost entirely unlike removing modes.

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The world is now just consumerists vs. corporations and I'm being tricked into picking a side.

I'm demanding a refund on this webforum for removing the c/dating community.

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I met my wife on c/dating. Those were the days

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

I'm so happy for you.

So exactly what I said?

That's a terrible standard to set and not necessary for defending refunding in this case specifically.

[–] haxboar@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

As gross as I think that is, I still think that they should be able to.

If a game brings in a nazi as a hero, I'm pretty OK with the publisher having to give me a refund.

That's adding new content to the game, not removing content already paid for.

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

The removed the all-white cast the game had prior.

Give me my $88, Valve.

Polygon has always been a shitty publication but holy shit. Fuck every person involved in writing this bullshit.

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

I remember when Polygon launched and it was being presented as the serious new site. And then it started operation and it's just another Kotaku with slightly longer articles.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Kotaku and RPS are the only good game news sites imo.

[–] RedNajm@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

https://aftermath.site/ is pretty cool too afaict, I discovered it by this article https://aftermath.site/war-crime-n64-palmer-luckey-m64-modretro/ and I love the energy

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

Rock Paper Shotgun is legit the best PC gaming news site. I know of

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

100% rps is great (unless there is any mention of Ukraine or Russia)

[–] 9to5@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean they are (I assume) well meaning progressive libs with everything that comes with that. Which still makes them much better than Capital G gamers mind you.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

Oh yeah for sure, and it isn't so much them as some of their reader base. I get they are trying to walk a difficult line, it's just funny every time it comes up and the frothing gamers still get mad they aren't 100% Slava Ukraini fash.

[–] EmmiLime@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Is RPS the one with the Witcher Gerald bathtub on every article related to Witcher? It was very funny.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 3 points 3 weeks ago

PC Gamer did that too iirc. RPS does have long running gags like that though so probably them too.

PCG is alright most times but they are cowards and disable comments on any article remotely controversial politics wise.

[–] Chronographs@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

It was sold to valnet a year ago and has gotten much worse imo

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

it was good for the first year or so then just kinda disappeared. It reminded me of EDGE magazine during that time which back in the day was a pretty serious mature magazine for decent videogame journalism. No idea if that mag still exists or if it's still like that today though.

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

The only interaction I ever had with Polygon is BDG's Unraveled videos. Honestly forgot they were supposed to be an actual news site.

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The entire staff got fired and replaced with contractors/AI recently IIRC

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

Lmao that explains a lot

[–] IranOuttaOil@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago

We need ethics in games journalism!

Tye bad politics is one thing. can-excuse-1 If there's no Zombinis she's fucking cancelled.

Edit: There is Zoombinis, fuck. Their story comes off as zionist as fuck though. Maybe that's where she got the liberal zionist brainworms.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

Oh I didn't actually watch it, wasn't gonna subject myself to how vidja taught her hanging out with Hilldawg was based

[–] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 28 points 3 weeks ago

Steam has handed out special case refunds like this for years. It's not even a new phenomenon.

Awful article.

[–] Romkslrqusz@lemmy.zip 25 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Why does it seem like every publication reporting on this is simping for EA?

[–] 99zz99@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

Because they are. Marketing budgets are for controlling narratives; it’s more than just Google ads.

[–] shath@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago

it is the point of the publications existence

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago

Won't someone think of EA's shareholders?

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

In 2020, Nintendo successfully got the right to refund digital preorders removed in the EU, so you'll excuse me if I don't care about another company having a lenient refund policy. Especially considering EA is now owned by Jared Kushner and Saudi Arabia.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Where's the problem exactly?

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I wouldn't necessarily say problem, but the question I would ask is if Steam Support is the one doing the refunding, how does that get sent up the chain to EA? Or is that money now coming out of Steams hands? Not saying that's how it is, I genuinely don't know.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

I imagine it's refunded the way the split goes in the first place.

[–] muhg@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 3 weeks ago

I've been waiting for this kind of thing to happen.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

If Overwatch 2 hadn't dropped the number and switched back to "Overwatch" I think that one might be eligible given the original game literally ceased to exist.

[–] muhg@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

Will never get over the fact that blizzard killed my original copy of overwatch before thr game even shut down. Literal paperweight now.
