Overview:

Electric Vehicles are a key part of our tomorrow and how we get there. If we can get all the fossil fuel vehicles off our roads, out of our seas and out of our skies, we'll have a much better environment. This community is where we discuss the various different vehicles and news stories regarding electric transportation.

It’d be nice of someone told them you don’t need that big pedestrian smasher grill on an ev.

[–] jake_jake_jake_@lemmy.world 24 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

It almost looks like they have framing to obscure the true shape under the tarps

[–] KnitWit@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

I sure hope so.

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 weeks ago

It's definitely foam blocks to obscure the shape. We use them for camo all the time.

Especially since the sole reason for that bullshit is skirting fuel mileage requirements.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You dont need it on ICE either.

Somebody not bezos should make small EV trucks

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 36 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

At some point you need to stop letting perfect be the enemy of the good. Bezos is a Slate investor, but that hardly makes a slate something that's made by Bezos. It doesn't seem connected to the Amazon ecosystem in any way.

It's really easy to purity test oneself into complete irrelevance.

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

They're not saying to boycott it. They're saying people at least less evil should be competing.

Anything that doesn't have mandatory telemetry gets my approval. It's a very low bar to clear but there really aren't any others trying to do it.

Check out telo - i really like them (wish it were more affordable, but still, if i were to buy a new vehicle, itd be that one once available and vetted)

[–] cogitase@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Telo and Canoo really went back to the drawing board and designed trucks around the skateboard design of an EV. No frunk, front seat as far forward as possible, relatively aerodynamic design. Carbros absolutely hated them and derided them to no end but the only real objection was that they looked so much different from the designs they are accustomed to to, that is, designs tailored to the specific problem of accommodating a large engine block. At some point we’re going to have to leave these designs in the past, it’s just a matter of time.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (5 children)

Meanwhile, the past:

Edit: the more I think about it, bringing back the Econoline brand specifically as an electric "cabover" pickup and/or van would be extremely cool.

(It wouldn't really be a cabover because the thing the cab is over is the engine and an EV doesn't have that, but you know what I mean.)

Hadn't heard of those before. I like the Canoo design immediately, Telo less so but if they ever made a 2 door with a longer bed I'd probably be into it.

[–] ReignOfTerror@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

The point of the telo is that it doesn't need a longer bed. The rear seat folds down and you open a hatch and now you have a 8ft bed in a vehicle the size of a Mini Cooper

If telo actually launches a product I'll eat my hat.

[–] actionjbone@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Are you even wearing a hat, sir?

Won't find any of these under $40k at any dealer

[–] plateee@piefed.social 13 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, I'm staying the fuck away from Ford or at least the next 5 years. They outsourced all of their design shit to AI and then had to higher engineers back.

[–] bw42@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Oh look, Ford is making another shit UV with a pretend bed, so innovative.

Will start at $30k with the mandatory fees, before the dealers "value add" it another $15k.

My 2006 Ranger is the last Ford I will ever own.

Great another monster sized truck that needs to do a 3 point turn to get on to my street because they can't corner worth a shit. Even Maverick - which might be the smallest pick up I can get in the US right now is the size of a large to mid sized pick up.

Man I'd love to have an EV truck that is the size of one of the old Toyota pick-ups from the 90s. Make me a truck that I can see over the roof of and I am sold.

[–] st3ph3n@midwest.social 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The upcoming Slate truck appears to be the closest thing to that ideal.

[–] stopforgettingit@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yea I my eye on the Slate, I'll wait to see the rollout on that one.

[–] bw42@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I put money down on a Slate. It was the closest to what I wanted; a simple, no bs, light duty truck that's electric.

Their site puts it at just a little bigger than 1980's Toyota pick-up.

Sounds great. Can I get it without spyware?

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago
[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The MSRP listed is almost the same price a new Maverick starts at. Now let's see if they actually produce enough to meet demand to keep it at that MSRP, or if this will be just like when the Maverick launched and the dealers tack on another 15-20k due to scarcity.

I'd consider this for a trade in of my hybrid Maverick, but we will see when it's fully revealed.

[–] MML@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

The Maverick is a truck, the mustang comes in a crossover, why even keep the names.

I really wish they would make an ICE and EV versions of the 1980's Toyota mini truck, Isuzu Pup, Ranger/S10...

Who remembers Joe Isuzu?

Commercials were so much better back then.

If it's electric, why is the hood tall? There should be no need and it is a danger to pedestrian and cyclists.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Well they have been stuffing their covers to obscure the shape, so dont know for sure. Given their bragging about aero, it likely is not as bad as it looks.

[–] scops@reddthat.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

The kid killer bumper is a feature, not a bug, apparently

That ford CEO is consistently on the wrong side of everything. Not a chance. Not even if you threw in the upgraded aerodynamic cup holders

State of Charge channel on YouTube did some research (and speculation) and believes the battery will be a 51 kWh LFP.

That would mean the likely range on a mid-sized pickup (depending on the aero, wheel size, tires, etc.) is about 200 miles or less.

It is also confirmed to be 400V architecture. So its likely to be fairly slow charging (compared to the best possible charge speeds in recent EVs).

Informed speculation for those who are interested.

I hate when articles like this don’t include a link to the actual announcement.

[–] bluGill@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

How doesn't it tow, and what is the cargo capacity? To me trucks are about work. I hate 4 door trucks because to get cargo space compromises either length or need space. I had one before and it was not fun to drive but I used that full length bed. I have need to haul a big trailer as well. If it is the family I'll drive a car. (Spreading of cars, I want a tiny car as they are so much more fun to drive)

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Based on the tone of their reveal, I'm not having high hopes for towing. Which would be a shame as I was hoping for a 4,000 pound towing capacity. Clearly targeted at city drivers that aren't doing a lot of real truck stuff.

Their emphasis on surfboard in the bed tells me they will at least do midgate for more workable bed... At least in fair weather conditions. That might make it ok at hauling wood from the store for projects.

On the carfront, would love for something like a miata, even with a short range.

I just want a kei car, or functional public transportation, or sidewalks with trees over them.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I think I'm honestly going to do with an ebike. Car prices have gotten insane lately. I no longer travel across the country for work, and it's just me so I think I could manage regular small trips to the grocery store and back on a bike that I didn't have to do all the work to propel.

"Childslayer 5000e" would be more fitting

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 3 points 2 weeks ago

Gotta keep that grille big and manly, especially to make up for the fact that it’s electric! The lives of a few children are inconsequential compared to that.

That’s kind of a cool name. Odd choice for a pickup, though.
