If Trump changed nothing about himself or his policies except his party affiliation he would be in jail. As bad as democrats can be about other things, they do turn on other democrats if there are reasons to, and there couldn’t be more reasons to turn on Trump. The big difference would be that republicans would absolutely be holding Trump accountable for his actions with that one little change, so this is just more projection.

A demonstration of two things to remember.

One: Conservatives are tribal. They value in-group membership more than almost anything else.

Two: They think everyone is like them. They are not good at empathy.

They are bad people.

I know a lot of liberals that fit the first definition. The only real difference being they enjoy symbolic empathy.

The people I see living in my neighborhood with the "all are welcome here" pride + blm flags in their yard; the same people that show up at our town hall meetings fighting public transit, affordable housing, housing for the homeless.

They spend a lot of their energy having to explain why "maintaining the character and culture" of their neighborhood is all they want. Sometimes I prefer the rascist I grew up with in the south. You don't have to spend 30 minutes to realize their garbage people. They at least tell you straight up.

There aren't any liberals that would like Trump if he was a Democrat. Because he doesn't do the symbolic empathy. That's why they loved Obama so much. They used him like a BLM flag in their yard.

I mean, a lot of people like to pretend Berkeley, CA is a liberal city. I don't think they realize that the hippies were mostly kids of conservatives who wanted to do drugs and not go to war. That's about it. The summer of love was just that, a summer. The hippies turned into yuppies and traded weed and magic mushrooms for cocaine in the 80s

That movement was largely a place for young liberals, interested in resistance to Vietnam, to go and be useless and not become socialist. It was a means of keeping them separated from a growing militant resistance to the apartheid in America (Malcom X, Black Pathers, etc).

If you're smoking weed and telling everyone "just give peace a chance" you can stand idle as the violent state attacks black neighborhoods for mass incarceration and condemn "violence on all sides". Which is just allowing the violence of the oppressive state to be justified.

Being against bad things while telling everyone else "not yet" when they try to fight to stop the bad things. That's American liberalism in a nutshell.

Hell, listen to Kings frustration.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice

Or in song form by Phil Ochs: https://youtu.be/3cdqQ2BdgOA

Pointing to historical examples that liberals of the past failed on is hard for modern day liberals though. They know the Jim Crow south was bad. They know the Vietnam war was bad. But they're unable to realize it until after the fact. Israel took them 2 years of genocide to start acknowledging.

If Satan was an angel would you still reject him?

[–] f1error@lemmy.world 0 points 57 minutes ago (1 children)

Lucifer, the Light-Bringer, is an angel.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 51 minutes ago

Yar. And Trump is a NY democrat.

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

I'm not sure what kind of "gotcha" this is supposed to be. Is "J" suggesting that we only hate him because he's a Republican, independent of his actual character and actions, and that we'd change our minds about him if he switched his party affiliation but kept doing the same stuff? Or is he trying to suggest that we hate him, specifically, for some "unknown" reason, and would continue to hate him even if he changed his platform and started doing Democrat things?

I mean, no matter his party or actions, he's still in the Epstein Files, so I'd say he isn't worthy of elected office and should be in jail even if he were to switch his party.

If he weren't a pedophile, he's still a racist, so no, I'm still orange-man-bad.

If he weren't a pedophile or a racist, he's still a remarkably stupid and vain person. Still not voting for him, regardless of party.

If he weren't a pedophile or a racist or dumb or vain, his policies have still killed and will continue to kill millions of people, so yeah, still despise him even if he were a Democrat.

Skipping ahead a bit:

If he weren't a pedophile or a racist or dumb or vain, and hadn't pushed murderous policies and wasn't a fascist, and hadn't attempted to tear down democracy, and hadn't harmed our international standing, and wasn't destroying the global economy, and wasn't enriching himself at the expense of the American taxpayer, and hadn't destroyed any semblance of social safety net we ever had, and wasn't a warhawk and hadn't built a private army out of the worst people from high school, and didn't have a complete disregard for truth and reality, and hadn't hollowed out reasonable discourse in our country, and wasn't the figurehead being puppeted by Stephen Miller and Steve Bannon and Mitch McConnell, and hadn't delivered the Supreme Court gift-wrapped into the hands of conservative activists, and never threatened the free press, and never wasted American money on vanity projects, and hadn't tried to distract from all of that with moldy bread and terrible circuses...

...then, yeah, I guess I might stop thinking of him as the worst American who ever held any elected office. But at that point...would he still be Donald Trump?

[–] avg@lemmy.zip 11 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I disliked him before I was political or knew his political affiliation, everything since then has only served to reaffirm my previous conclusion. Also the person asking has no idea how much we hate the representatives we have to vote for so the literal Satan they voted for in their primary doesn't win the election.

He has dipped his dick in multiple parties before he found the one degenerate enough to tolerate him. He was a Democrat for a while, then an independent, but those didn’t work for him because they had scruples.

Some people don’t know, but he ran for president under those parties and lost miserably.

[–] MrSelfDestruct@piefed.zip 7 points 5 hours ago

A turd will always be a turd.

[–] GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

It does not matter what ideology he claims to represent. He's a criminal degenerate, and that's the only ideology he represents.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

If he was a Democrat, I wouldn't be

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world -2 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Soooooooo.......you'd be republican?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 0 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

If he was the democrat candidate I'd vote republican to keep him out, yeah

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 minutes ago

Thinking about it, if it was him vs like Mitt Romney or John McCain or something I probably would vote Republican.

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

There are many more choices.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world -1 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

The only choices I see are:

Vote Democrat.

Vote Repupublican.

Vote 3rd party and throw your vote away.

Don't vote.

They already ruled out voting democrat. By voting 3rd party or not voting, you throw your vote away.

That leaves vote Republican. What other choices am I missing?

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

If trump was the best option I'd be hopping the border out of this (even shittier) hell hole

[–] LillyPip@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

That’s how you vote, not what you are. I was talking about what you are.

I’m a socialist, but I vote democrat because I understand how this works.

[–] Protoknuckles@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

I'd be way angrier at him. I have such little expectations from the right.

[–] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

he wasn't a democrat. he isn't a republican. he doesn't have an ideology. he doesn't really care about managing public affairs.

he is in it for money (and narcissistic revenge against obama for laughing at him). he will happily shout right or left talking points as long as he believes they will get him 51% of votes in the end.

[–] DigDoug@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Telling on themselves as per usual.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

I knew he wasn't to be trusted ever since he tried to convince the country to eat their pizza crust first.

Everything with this guy is backwards.
