I didn’t find the little dumbass in the trash, but my nephew did, then he showed up at my door with a sob story and an idiot cat. He thought me seeing the skinny, hungry, idiot street rat of an animal with his big dumb eyes and stupid clipped ear and how affectionate he was that I wouldn’t be able to say no because he “nEeDS a GooD hOmE, hE’s sOOO tHin anD hUngRy, WiNTeR iS cOMiNg,” and I “hAvE a HeaRt ANd LOvE aNimALs aNd wOuLD tAKe gOOd cAre oF hIm,” like a dumbass.

I hate that he was right.

My uncle was like you when I brought home a stray as a kid. Yelled about it for 2 years. When my cat died he took a week off work and drank and cried all day.

[–] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 15 points 6 days ago (2 children)

That’s the biggest reason I didn’t want another cat, I had just said goodbye to my best friend of 23 years, Jim Bones, a couple months earlier, it fucking destroyed me. It was some ugly cryin’. That’s in my future once again, now.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's so rough losing them, but despite that, at least for me, the time we spend with them is worth it.

I agree, and I do love the weird little guy, he’s my buddy. He’s an ungovernable asshole, but that’s kind of why I like him, he’s a rebel, we get each other. Could have used a little more time between cats, though.

His mom, my sister, did the exact same thing when our mom’s cat passed, showed up two days later with a kitten that was meowing outside her window in the rain. He ended up being the perfect little man, though, he’s the kind of cat that makes people think they want a cat, very much unlike the beast that was dropped onto my doorstep.

Same here. When I lost my last cat. I couldn't bear to have another. Then one chose me. Now she cuddles with my wife and stares at me to make me jealous

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

My Dad never wanted any of the animals.

I have pictures of him with 4 animals on his lap at once.

Untrue. I paid a lot of money for this idiot.

Disrespecting the Cat Distribution System is a serious crime against nature.

I fell in love with the Cornish Rex breed, and the only real option is go through s breeder. I know it's not exactly cool these days to go outside a shelter, but I couldn't resist. We do have 2 dumpster cats that we love dearly to make up for it though.

[–] ickplant@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Casper!!! 🤍🤍🤍

[–] WestlyWhitetail@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

I have never seen a single cat on earth who wasn't named some shit like "Toe Sucker 4"

And for the record, they were always the sweetest animals I've ever met.

[–] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

I once rescued a kitten I found running around outside of my place. Riddled with parasites, easily days away from death. Solid black, adorable and loving. Got her all healed up and then I named her Le Muerte por Fuego (the Death by Fire). Until she had kittens and then she just became "Mama Cat."

Edit - Forgot to add a sentence about how I got her healed up

Your point being?

[–] eugenia@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago

I also found my cats in the garbage (literally and figuratively), but they're smart. Especially my Buffy.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

My cats are intelligent... they are little killing machines though.

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I had an orange kitty, recently passed, who was very clever. He would chase my wife's feet after it was time for her to get up, and would see me off to work just about every morning for a year before he started getting sick. He would always want to be between us if there was a between to be had.

His idiot/asshole black litter mate, would forget who he was if either went to the vet and hiss at and attack him for a few days afterwards. He also knew those were feet his brother was chasing, he just didn't understand why.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 6 days ago

Our orange male does the vet thing, although it takes him months to get over it.

We ended up rehoming one of our older cats because of it, but she always hated not being an only cat because she's an attention sponge, and it was to a retire who had just lost her husband and dog and needed someone to give attention to. And I sill get to pet sit her a few times a year.

I don’t think our local shelters have ever asked us anything other than basic ass questions like “are you going to let your cat outside to get eaten by coyotes?” and “you know to not be mad at the kitten because it can’t control its claws yet, right?”

[–] janewaydidnothingwrong@lemmy.world 59 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Mine is Rusty Shackleford, I did indeed find him in the garbage at work eating sausage patties, and he is the dumbest animal on earth. I love him edit:

[–] EvilHankVenture@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

That's a fantastic name, but I know his real name is Dale.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Tummy up is the best

[–] naeap@sopuli.xyz 22 points 1 week ago (15 children)

I had pretty intelligent cats all my life and the last one exceeded everyone - an orange one by the way.

Obviously there are dumb and more intelligent cats, but I think, it's mostly the owners, that are too dumb to understand their cat.
Communication isn't a one way street

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 6 days ago

Orange cats are the sneakiest, craftiest little bastards imaginable. They can also be incredibly dumbass. The two are not exclusive, look at every character Brendan Fraser has played

The cat distribution system works in strange ways. I had an engine cat once. Or at least what I believe to be an engine cat.

I heard meowing the day after our wedding. I went outside and saw a tiny orange kitten. They bolted and caught themselves in a chain link fence. We took them in. They were missing two claws that had been removed through mechanical means and had some mysterious black oily stuff on them.

They were with us for several years and were one of the best cats ever. One of the questions my wife asked me on our first date was "Have you ever read the Life of Pi?" I had. That book was instrumental in me showing that I was not an idiot and that I read books. We named the cat Pi. Because Pi helped us get married.

[–] TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah... My house serves as a depot for the local cat distribution network. Our neighborhood has a lot of strays and we consistently put out food in an effort to build up enough trust to get them spayed, neutered, or provide some much needed wound/healthcare.

It's a catch and release program, but sometimes they decide the release aspect is optional. The old or sick cats usually decide that being pampered indoors makes a lot of sense, so we've gotten to show some love to some rough old-timers before they pass.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Half of the cats I feed are foster cats that were determined to be ineligible for adoption. I only had one TNR from our property that we kept. We noticed they had neurological issues after getting fixed. They stayed with us for two years before their kidneys failed. They were a good cat.

[–] TranscendentalEmpire@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, a lot of the cats that only end up being with us for a short time had been mostly feral all their lives. For the most part the only reason they end up tolerating us at first is because they are just too old or sick to put up a fight.

By the end though they almost unanimously end up really enjoying their stay. Prob doesn't hurt that once we've decided it's reached end of life care they get to have as much rotisserie chicken or mackle they can handle. Even if they had a rough life, the least we can do is give them a good ending.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Reminds you that while we domesticated dogs, cats just showed up and moved in

Currently have three different little boarders who are more than happy to make me aware it's my privilege to host them.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago

Such a sweet story, love the kitty

[–] az04@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

"Vic for short"

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mine is Fizzgig, born in a window well and found feasting on a squirrel corpse. Given that he was just 3 weeks old, its unclear if he killed the squirrel himself.

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Ours is officially named "Flo" as per his adoption papers, which is a very strange cat name, so we decided to unofficially call him "Fiorenzo Taters III" to give him a normal one, too.
