Maybe if Elon throws out a few more Nazi salutes, it will fix the problem. Surely that will increase sales.

How do you lose money selling electric cars when two oil critical straits are blocaded

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 88 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

By having your CEO come out as a fascist, pissing off the demographic that tends to buy EVs and also stagnating while allowing your competitors to catch up.

By pivoting to humanoid robots and LLMs.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 28 points 3 weeks ago

However, the company's gross profits dropped as operating expenses climbed far quicker than revenue, in large part thanks to AI-related capital expenses and other research and development

Teslas are objectively last Gen. The only reason they still sell well in the US and some other markets is tariffs.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 18 points 3 weeks ago

Other US companies are actually competing with them for market share now, too. It certainly isn't helping Tesla sell.

Also, Teslas are starting to get the reputation they deserve: overpriced shitbox vehicles that have horrible build quality because Musk has stripped anything good out of them for profit.

The company missed Wall Street expectations, despite its core automotive segment generating just over $20 billion in revenue, up 23 percent from a year ago.

How the fuck did it make $20 billion? How the fuck did it make 23% more than last year? Who the fuck is still buying this shit?

As always, people have short memories, or just do not give a shit about ethics

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/26/business/tesla-elon-musk-europe.html

Tesla’s vehicle sales rose 77 percent from January through May compared with a year earlier, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said this week. In May, Tesla sold 22,000 cars in Europe. That’s more than Ford, Nissan or Honda, even when including their fossil-fuel models.

Many people seem to have put aside their personal feelings about Mr. Musk after Tesla cut prices for its entry-level models to levels that are competitive with comparable gasoline or diesel vehicles and inexpensive cars from China. In some countries, Tesla’s Model Y sport utility vehicles can be leased for less than 300 euros, or about $340, a month.

“Once you go down the pricing scale, people pay less attention to ethics or morality,” said Matthias Schmidt, an independent analyst in Berlin who tracks electric vehicles sales. “Tesla’s product has become so appealing from a price perspective, it’s almost too good to refuse.”

[–] GratefullyGodless@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

As the old saying goes..."Ethics are a luxury that poor people can't afford."

[–] msage@programming.dev 16 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

But they can afford a Tesla

I remember Tesla sales dropping after this

so I hoped people are still capable of using ethics when making financial decisions but it looks like I was wrong.

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

The people I know who bought one don't give a shit about ethics. They stayed away from them for as long as they were socially unacceptable, but as soon as the storm blew over they saw their chance to buy one.

Just... a data point. My experience is that at least 20% of a population doesn't care about stuff like this. They care about their own social status, but not ethics.

Absorption by SpaceX incoming.

[–] andallthat@lemmy.world 26 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, it would still make more sense than SpaceX + xAI. Unlike a data center, a Tesla did actually go to space

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 15 points 3 weeks ago

And even that was out of spite. That was supposed to be the roadster that the actual founder of Tesla had ordered.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 34 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (4 children)

Headline conveniently phrased to attract clicks from certain segment of internet users.

[–] eager_eagle@lemmy.world 56 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

that's usually the goal of a headline

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 18 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

Futurism's are particularly egregious. It exists to get clicks, and I mean in a way that clearly none of its writers give a single shit.

This headline and story in particular are okay enough, but in general, Futurism will take scraps and turn it into "[x person/business/industry our readerbase doesn't like] is literally shitting its pants and DYING".

Chat, is it good when a stock is down 28% YTD?

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 15 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Not sure it quite qualifies as a free fall yet, we can all hope though.

Every now and then there's a news about these corporations crashing but after a week they are all back at their all time high. This sort of news doesn't seem to achieve nothing but give these corporation visibility and keep better news at bay.

tesla has had disastrous earnings in the past and it hasn't bothered the investors before. what charged?

[–] geekwithsoul@piefed.social 47 points 4 weeks ago

I think in the eyes of many investors, Elon has lost whatever mojo they thought he had. As Elon never had any mojo to speak of, this mostly just means the investors are finally catching up with reality.

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 18 points 4 weeks ago (3 children)

Could be that some of the irrational Musk fanboys have moved their money over to Spacex? Could also be a complete coincidence though given past Tesla price movements.

Oof.

I sold my shares years ago, when Musk started to show his first signs of becoming radicalized. Looks like it was a pretty good call.

I predicted this after his reputation fully tanked when he went full MAGA/ DOGE. Every earnings report is going to depress the stock price more and more, until the floor just falls out, and it collapses.

Tesla is NEVER coming back. It will be bankrupt in 3 years.

Nobody wants to buy a car from a car company that only wants to build robots in the future.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 22 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I bought an EV recently, and Ive been asked a few times why I didn't get a Tesla. There's a wide range of reasons but the one that's the most fun to say is "I wanted a car made by a real car company".

Wall Street spent years pricing Tesla like a future AI empire instead of a car company. Now investors are getting a reminder that robotaxis, humanoids and promises don’t magically pay today’s bills. Reality has an annoying habit of showing up right after earnings season.

Oof, 1 year of gains wiped out

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 19 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

In two weeks when SPCX employees can sell, please let them cash out and resign as hard as possible. They're reasonable intelligent people who know the promises are science fantasy, so this is a plausible scenario. Then, as investors lose faith, Tesla enters true freefall right as fElon tries to leverage his shares to float SPCX. Let this Icarus of Grift come spiraling down so we never have to hear about him or his cultists again.

Looking at short term with stocks is never the right thing to do. Stocks go up and down every day.

You should always look at 1Y and 5Y and as we see for Tesla, that's ..... oh.

Nevermind.

Don't be fooled by the headline. Look at the long term trend. It is still high. Just a bump. Its the same price as July 2025.
