That’s a whole point though: it isn’t irrelevant at all. It’s their strongest motivator for being such hateful, hypocritical cunts.
C'mon. Fascist architects don't give a fuck either way about the people they demonize. They don't pick people because they have a personal issue with them, they pick them because they best fill the role a fascist needs of them.
I do not give a fuck about their repressed emotions. No one should. What matters is their actions. Their actions are killing queer people. It does not matter if those actions reflect self-hatred, because they aren't the ones being killed.
It matters because they actively aim to create more shame and repression to increase their ranks.

That's what Hunter said. To be clear he's blaming "closeted gays" not "gays", he's known to troll people on social media and nothing upsets the GOP more than the truth.
The fact that so many progressives can't tell the difference between genuine ableism/bigotry and trolling conservatives is why America can't have nice things.
There are differences anyone can see, but unfortunately there are also unavoidable similarities, including some of the consequences, and that is a lot harder to see.

Why does it matter?
He was given a platform by the GOP when they dragged him through the mud for checks notes struggling with addiction.
It probably started as a therapeutic way for him to take back control of the narrative surrounding his own life and his sobriety journey when he broke his silence a few months ago. Addiction is a mother fucker, having gone through it myself, so I support him and am proud of him.
Everything else is just putting into context how ridiculous U.S. politics is these days. The poor guy just wanted to actually speak for himself, after years and years of having his name dragged through the mud. He didn't ask for Donald Dump to make his life an open book, but he's having fun with it now, and I'm here for it.
Plus, thanks to the GOP, it's confirmed he's packing a massive shlong. And I love that for him.
I'm fine with it. Trump's criminal whelps screamed about Hunter's failed attempts at getting a lucrative gig, and now they're stealing America blind. Hunters criticism stings much harder than anyone else's.
