"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

I was asked whether I use any AI.

When I said that I don't need it, I was given a strange look and was called primitive/a madman.

Is humanity really that far gone that we have to rely on a data collecting machine by big tech to be our second brain?

It seems that people have gotten too lazy to even look something up online.

Edit: "b-but he bombed people" I in no way compare myself to the Unabomber and only agree on his take of humanity becoming slaves of the tools they depend on.

The way I see it, people who avoid genAI are going to eventually rule over the people who have let their minds atrophy. They'll be brain dead enough that we would easily be able to take back our planet from those empty shells once called humans.

Does this sound extreme? Yes! I am very aware of how bad this all sounds.

Do I care? No. I only care about those who wish to willingly atrophy their brain if they choose to remedy that problem. I am too far above them, otherwise, to give a damn. My autism refuses to let me become one of those creatures.

This is oddly inspiring

What would happen if you asked an Amish about living without phones or Internet? Our memory and attention span has already been going down the crapper. I think humanity's been doomed since the invention of tools and passing on development. I feel guilty of it at times when spending money on new, shiny, unnecessary hardware.

Mind you, AI is exceptionally bad, but that's mostly because of the bubble going on, making it affordable for masses when only the rich (unfortunately) should afford it. And the rich have been brainrotted since ancient Rome, or earlier.

I only read parts of Unabomber's manifesto and don't remember much. I think most of it was either obvious already (but maybe spoken fancier) or I disagreed.

All my schoolmates thought I was crazy when I told them I didn't have a Facebook or Twitter account. Now who's laughing? Stay strong, this too shall pass.

I know that look you saw. I enjoy it. If people ask me what I think I usually give them some version of "I prefer my critical thinking unaltered, thank you"

Consider how stupid the average person is. Now remember that half of them are stupider than that.

[–] alecsargent@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago (5 children)

If that quote is real then George Carlin does not know the meaning of average.

[–] Jason2357@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

While people typically equate "average" with the mean, that is not a hard definition. Average is a colloquialism, and can be the median or mode, or other central tendency.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 5 points 11 hours ago

Average is a decent proxy for median when things are on a standard distribution.

What distribution is IQ on again? ...

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 11 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (2 children)

Nah he was just good enough at what he did to know "Median" wouldn't work as a punchline.

If you doubt this quote is real, look him up. Cuz you are almost certainly missing out.

[–] alecsargent@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

First time I hear about him, I guess it makes sense he would say that in a comedy show.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

He was incredibly good with words.

His routine on near misses.

His get on the plane? fuck you I'm getting IN the plane!

He has some cringe stuff by today's standards but he was an incredibly insightful and intelligent comedian.

[–] pdxfed@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

He used "median" when playing shows for the upper intelligence half.

Kidding.

[–] aport@programming.dev 1 points 9 hours ago

Mean, median, and mode are all types of averages.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 2 points 14 hours ago

He knew his audience would understand what he meant because a lot of people use average to mean the middle even though it isn't technically correct.

How old are you? 14?
If that is so, I was of the impression that you had to be of age to make a Lemmy account and I see good reasons for that.
If you are older than that, why do you glamorize a misogynistic loser who had his head so far up his own ass that his idea of making the world a better place was bombing and killing random people with package bombs.
Either way, you are weird and not in a good way.

If you were more literate for your age, you'd read the whole post before jumping to conclusions.

You mean the stuff you edited just minutes ago?
Even with this added, Kaczynski wasn't some genius far ahead of his time. He was the Proto Incel Schoolshooter. His rage and frustration didn't come from some deep held believe in a better future but because he felt that he didn't got what he felt entitled to. Hence why he didn't try to form a community and work together with like minded people but cowardly killed innocent people.

[–] H3rm7t@infosec.pub 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

It'd be self explanatory even without the edit if you consider common sense. Besides you really should do more research or atleast read the whole manifesto

I think that's the Unabomber, a Luddite terrorist from the 1990's whose log cabin rantings seem prophetic today.

[–] H3rm7t@infosec.pub 13 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

He did make some valid points, even predicting how modern society will be (currently is) dependent on modern technology, including artificial intelligence.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 6 points 15 hours ago

He was a genius with a PhD in Mathmatics

[–] Harvey656@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It never occurred to me that op was comparing themselves to the unabomber.

[–] H3rm7t@infosec.pub 5 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Is admiring someone's thoughts automatically make me the same person? He did kill a bunch of civilians and I'm not a big fan of bombing people

The man was fucked late in life- REALLY fell off the sanity train, BUT if you're not familiar he was also an unbelievable genius-level man before losing it. Crazy freakin' rabbit-hole to go down if it interests you. It did interest me.

This ain't too bad either, from his 2016 book:

Chapter 2, "Why the Technological System Will Destroy Itself", develops the author’s theory of "self-propagating systems"—systems that compete against each other for power without any regard for the long-term consequences, since any self-propagating systems that take the long-term into account will lose their competitive edge and be out-competed by self-propagating systems that do not. Kaczynski ultimately argues that since the technological system itself is a self-propagating system composed of self-propagating subsystems that competes for power in the short-term without regard for the long-term negative consequences, that the logical conclusion of the continued growth of the technological system is the complete destruction of the biosphere, wiping out all complex lifeforms.

Theodore John Kaczynski was born in Chicago on May 22, 1942, to working-class parents Wanda Theresa (née Dombek) and Theodore Richard Kaczynski, a sausage maker.[12] The two were Polish Americans who were raised as Roman Catholics but later became atheists.[13]

What an odd thing to include.

Edit: Here's another oddity:

Kaczynski used a typewriter to write his manuscript, capitalizing entire words for emphasis, in lieu of italics.

Typerwriters didn't have italics and it wouldn't be only a crazy person writing on a typewriter in 1995.

Just seems like a detail that would probably be ignored in almost any other case. How often have you seen a parents later change of religion mentioned in a Wikipedia biography? I think the subtle message here is, "Maybe lack of belief in God led to his terrorism."

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Interesting thought. Still, if anyone ever made a record of my life I'd want such a thing mentioned.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 16 hours ago

Yeah, but if you were a terrorist, they'd try to tar whatever your origins are, no matter how tangentially related.

I mean, if I were a terrorist, I'd feel it weird if they mentioned something like me being 1/4 Jewish on my dad's, raised Catholic, side. I didn't even find out about it until I was in college. I'd guess it was some anti-Semite wikipedia editor with a grudge.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 0 points 17 hours ago

I feel that way about Castro. I love his anti-US screeds, but he is a total piece of shit; also probably unlikely he wrote them anyway.
