Fox News and the entire GOP is so terrified of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's success that they are mocking him for asking New Yorkers to be careful with their thermostats during an extreme heat wave. This is the same advice Trump's Energy Department has suggested as well.

Not only do they look foolish, but they appear desperate in their efforts to smear and ridicule a popular political rival.

This morning on Fox and Friends, the three co-hosts were beside themselves that the mayor of New York City would ask residents to turn the thermostat higher to conserve energy so that there aren't any blackouts during this massive heat wave.

American conservatives talking about “freedom” have very much come to resemble spoiled children wailing about any resistance to even their flightiest whims. A government advisory does not impinge upon your freedom, jackasses.

Come to? What the fuck was the second civil war about?

The whiskey tax one, the chattel slavery one, the coal/slavery one....

[–] metermatic26@lemmy.world 10 points 12 hours ago

In America, asking someone to do anything for anyone other than themselves…

Is COMMUNISM

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 16 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

If they hate Mamdani so much why don’t they leave New York instead of whining about it ?

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 12 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Better to live in blue states and blue cities and complain than to live in a red state, I reckon lol

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

How they make their money is by constantly bitching at what a Democrat does and gladly misinterpret good policy or announcements to their own greedy benefit.

[–] suicidaleggroll@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

All while living in that Democrat-controlled area because it's much nicer than the Republican hellhole they keep clamoring for

[–] Hazor@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

But haven't you heard? All cities are crime-ridden hellscapes full of immigrants who will steal your job while also being lazy and collecting welfare, and who are brutish rapists/murderers but also sickly plague carriers, and who... don't always speak English. 😱

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 hours ago

I always laughed at the "stealing jobs" comment.

There is no stealing involved. If anything they got outbid and their employer took the bait.

I wonder if it'll still be communism when the data centers advise it

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 18 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Fox news logic is:

IF person who said is Mamdani THEN its communism

We can then extract from that communism isn't a set of actions and values to Fox News, its an adjective we apply to specific people to make them scary.

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 hours ago

Purposely conflating socialism and communism also reinforces this notion

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

But we also need to understand what they think is so scary about it: the government might give benefits to people that they hate.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

As much as I agree that is the driving concern behind fox news as an institution imo its more them trying to piggyback off decades of anticommunist propaganda and direct it at people who threaten their many cash cows and corrupt bullshit because even modest reforms to incrrease market competition at this point threaten their extreme levels of corruption.

The level of thought you put into your reply is far more than they expect from most their viewers and probably most the hosts.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 11 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Why are they suddenly back to using "Communism" as a catch-all pejorative, while at the same time apparently sending their kids to learn Mandarin?

Fuck these assholes.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

It's a legacy we inherited from the cold war. Half the time, Fox News is speaking to Boomers and older gen-X, all of whom grew up and/or lived under the shadow of thermonuclear war and the looming threat of "Communism" (USSR). Nevermind that's all passe, the propaganda still echoes in their ears and can be recalled in an instant by uttering that one trigger word.

[–] tonytins@pawb.social 3 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

It actually goes all the way back to the early 20th century, starting with the first red scare.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 5 points 15 hours ago

In Canada it's also become a dirty word all of a sudden.

[–] kingshrubb@lemmy.ml 4 points 12 hours ago

My A/C can't even get my rental to go below 80°F in this heat wave anyway 😆. I'll be relocating to the basement with frozen açai until further notice.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

This is literally what got Reagan elected. The same tactic will still work on many people.

[–] tauisgod@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

It predates him by far, but yes. It just goes to show how effective nearly a century of government propaganda can be.

[–] Microtonal_Banana@lemmy.zip 4 points 14 hours ago

Fox news viewers need to feel like victims every single day.

[–] Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world 14 points 18 hours ago

This is why an actual democratic socialist wins in new york.

To them, Gavin Newsome, Joe biden, and Kamala Harris get called socialists like it's a prize in a cereal box. At one point the young just ignore them.

[–] Kurtismayfield@lemmy.zip 18 points 19 hours ago

The best part is, now that Mandami is being criticized by the Fox outrage machine, all of the government websites that had similar recommendations are being changed.

Is everything sensible or socially conscious Communism now? Taking public transit, being more physically active, telling my family that I love them... all communism?

[–] Master167@lemmy.world 7 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

Correct. Anything MAGA doesn't like is Communism.

  • Enforcing Tax codes -> Communism
  • Lower Fossil Fuel usage -> Communism
  • Being told no on being asked out on a date -> Communism
  • Investigating anything for corruption -> Communism
  • Having to ask for mustard on your sandwich -> Communism

Basically anything.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

Its a thing they apply to specific people. You either do things communistly or freedomly even if its the same exact action.

For instance, when the DSA is saying the public should have ownership over Intel they're being real communists about it.

When Donald Trump does it, he's doing it freedom style, which makes it okay.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 32 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is everything sensible or socially conscious Communism now?

No, this is way off base.

Everything sensible or socially conscious has been Communism since the 1930s. Shoutout to Behind the Bastards, who coincidentally aired a couple of episodes about this very subject this week (Elizabeth Dilling episodes).

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Heyo, saw the episodes but didn't know who Dilling was, now I know I gotta listen. Thanks 👍🏿

Ah yes, asking your community as Mayor to be conscious of thermostat temperatures during a heatwave, to avoid brownouts or blackouts...

Communism. Not common sense.

Off topic, but as somebody who remembers when eastern seaboard grid died during the summer. I wouldn't want it to go down in this fucking heat.

And these "hosts" seem old enough that they should remember.

[–] jumjummy@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Yeah, but this way they can complain about him asking folks to adjust their thermostats, and if people don’t, and there happens to be a blackout, then they can ALSO blame him as if he’s somehow running the Eastern power grids.

Jimmy Carter asked the nation to turn down thermostats ~50 years ago, and these people are still freaking out about it.

[–] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 11 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Carter was promptly voted out of office and replaced with Ronald Reagan. We all know how that went.

It might have had something to do with Carter putting solar panels on the White House roof as well. Or the backroom deal that Reagan's people made with the Khomeini regime to keep the American hostages in captivity until after the election. Who knows.

[–] demonmariner@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 hours ago

I think Carter was simply out-charisma'd by Reagan. The televised debates had a clear winner (on presentation, not policy).

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 8 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

backroom deal that Reagan's people made with the Khomeini regime to keep the American hostages in captivity until after the election

I still hold that that was treason and should have been tried as such, but we only ever try people that attempt to make America better for treason

Automatic temperature controls engineer here:

This is exactly what you want to do in a heat wave. It’s called load shedding.

78°F in 100°F weather is going to feel perfectly cool. You’ll prevent your equipment from breaking down faster and see a notable difference in your electric bill.

Fox morons - this is definitely a Gandalf-I’m-trying-to-help-you moment.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

78°F in 100°F weather is going to feel perfectly cool.

Only if I've been outside. For those staying inside it's going to feel pretty unpleasant.

It's still the option though.

[–] Commuting4375@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

No it does not feel perfectly cool for all of us. Sincerely, someone who was soaked in sweat in their own home due to high indoor temperatures like this all week.

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 2 points 14 hours ago

It will feel perfectly cool if you repeatedly transition from outdoors to indoors.

That being said, I'm a pragmatist and 78 inside feels a shitload better than 94 inside.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

What business is it of yours what I do with my own thermostat?!

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

I think you've set the thermostat at 65 degrees for quite long enough, Bilbo.

load more comments (2 replies)

Fox and their audience would happily unplug someone's life support to charge their cell phones. God forbid they turn up their thermostats a degree or two to prevent widespread blackouts.

[–] toiletobserver@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Kinda like telling a woman what they can and can't do with their body, right?

[–] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 day ago

Men telling women what they can do with their bodies is like a dog giving advice on car repairs cause it likes to ride in it sometimes.

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

in other words. they can't find any legitimate issues with the mayor of new york and how he's governing and presenting himself to his constituents and the public, so they came up with this line of bullshit about thermostat settings.
