Average Reddit mod behavior.

Also, that rule 5 is kind of bizarre given the DSA closely associated with the Democratic Party, how is a "Democratic Party" subreddit just gonna ignore this not insignificant part of the party their board is about?

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 37 points 2 months ago (2 children)

From a Hexbear perspective, they are closely associated with the Democratic Party. However, party leadership has been going on TV all week declaring them the enemy. This is the point of DSA electoralism if you offer it some charitability: the Democrats, as a bourgeois capitalist party, will be forced to purge the Democratic Socialists.

The question is: what should the US Left do when that happens? Furthermore: what do we expect he US Left to do when that happens?

My understanding is that there is no mechanism to do this in american politics. American parties are not "parties" like they are in the rest of the world. Anyone can self label as Democrat or Republican and run and there is absolutely nothing either "party" can do to stop them other than run a different person and tell people that's who the leadership endorses.

In most of the world you register with a party and pay dues to the party as a part of membership. In the US you just register with the government as having a party affiliation, the party has no control of that.

What they gonna do? Fund zionist primary opponents? They're gonna lose.

Only way to stop it is to change US law to make parties more like real parties that control themselves and have proper membership lists etc. That or just arresting all "communists" as traitors to america or something.

So, they do actually have a few methods at their disposal. They can expel DSA members from the official party caucus, forcing them to effectively act as independents though they cannot be prevented from self-identifying as Democrats.

The only other disciplinary measures would be to censure them by simple majority (officially this is a form of public humiliation, they have to sit there and listen as they're berated, but literally nothing else happens) or vote to expel them from Congress by 2/3 majority vote.

Fun fact: George Santos is the only Republican to ever be expelled from Congress. Most expulsions were for supporting the Confederacy.

In 1980, Michael Myers was expelled from the House for ~~wearing a William Shatner mask and murdering 5 in Haddonfield, IL~~ taking bribes.

In 2002, James Trafficant was expelled from the house for taking bribes, racketeering, tax evasion, and making his staffers do chores on his farm (lmao)

[–] RobnHood@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Doesn’t being censured also remove them from any committees that they may be on? Which is not insignificant.

[–] EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago

Nope! That's just a second, other thing they do.

They're not connected other than that they're both used as a cudgel. A legislator can be removed from committees without being censured, or can be censured without being removed from any committees.

I can't imagine any of these DSA candidates would be allowed on committees in the first place, so that's unlikely to be useful ammunition.

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago

Idk I guess I figure they will come up something just like they do when they need to pass military funding or something else important to upholding capitalism.

I also dont know if I'm full onboard with DSA electoralism, maybe that's all wrong, its just one of many perspectives I keep in mind when thinking about this stuff

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You are assuming the Democrats are interested in winning, instead of reveling in humiliation.

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What humiliation? They are very efficient in protecting capital.

Do they enforce that for AOC? lmao the top post on the subreddit right now is an AOC post

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 26 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Report it for rule 5 violation.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 25 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

lmao I just did a search for AOC sorting by new and the last time she was posted about was 5 months ago and then 9 months. They are 100% removing posts where she is mentioned. They're leaving up the posts that are older, probably because they cba to remove them.

[–] free_casc@hexbear.net 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I wonder what these people will do if she wins the nomination for 2028 lol

Like, given the Platner situation, the liberals seem to have plenty of appetite to vote for her, since her spine is fucking titanium compared to Jeffries or Schumer lol

Theyre ready to vote their hearts out, so it might as well be her, and the party machinery just might be too jammed up to stop them since their Zionism is so fucking unpopular but it isn't really possible for them to change their ways.

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago

Even /r/democrats realizes she's not a (any kind of) socialist. Wonder when DSA will figure it out.

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 27 points 2 months ago

democratic ""socialists"" will give their dying breath to the demoKKKratic party and what do they get?

no posts about democratic socialists

[–] copandballtorture@hexbear.net 27 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They have established time and again that the party would prefer to lose to the right than to compromise to the left

[–] Trioxin@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 2 months ago

Well, of course... Socialism threatens capital, fascism does not; so those committed to preserving capitalism will prefer the latter.

[–] denver@hexbear.net 22 points 2 months ago

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 21 points 2 months ago (2 children)

What a ridiculous sub. Here's rule 4. Emphasis mine.

4. Don't attack Democrats

Posts and comments attacking Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Democrats or the Democratic party will be removed without warning.

  • The mods will determine if any content breaks the rules.

  • Users that attack Democrats will be banned without a warning. [Example]: A user or Sanders is a corporate Democrat.

  • You can criticize members of Congress but you cannot base it off of things like age, gender, ethnicity or religious affiliation

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wait so can I make negative comments about democrats based on policy or not?

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 23 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Yes! But expect to be banned.

In all seriousness - the rule is basically they'll ban you if they wanna. Our criticism is what they'd consider an "attack".

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Reminds me of when I made the mistake of going to a local "club" of Democrats because some politician was visiting. One of the attendees actually said the politician should be primaried if he doesn't support universal healthcare. The politician said he didn't appreciate "threats" and I got booed by the whole room when I countered that it's just how democracy is supposed to work.

Liberals are so fucking tedious.

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

How dare you check notes want your democratic system to do the things you want it to as a citizen?

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Love how they use up the first bullet point to just remind people how rules and moderators work. Just in case people forget.

[–] LeninsBeard@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

It's the Democrat sub, of course they need to clarify that the people who hold positions of power actually do things.

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 20 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I keep reading her name as Metal Kilos.

[–] ziggurter@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

Why not both?

[–] blunder@hexbear.net 17 points 2 months ago

Not very... Richard-D-Wolff democratic of them...

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

Just for fun, count how many times their rules mention that you can't promote independent politicians. lol. lmao.

It's very funny to me that you're literally not allowed to talk about the nationally popular Democratic Mayor of New York on r/Democrats.

They should be happy, the electorate is sending the dems actually fighters, embrace it.
