Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Mike Waltz the US Envoy to the UN said:

that the US will “create alternatives to our [military] basing posture” in the Middle East by “hardening some” and possibly moving others underground. “So this leverage that Iran thinks it has now is diminishing faster and faster, literally every week as we speak,”

This is a huge admission. He tries to frame is as strength but Iran has actually made it impossible for the US to use its bases. They're being forced to start moving underground and it's going to cost them a ton of money. This also shows that the US has no intention of holding up its end of the MoU.

“So this leverage that Iran thinks it has now is diminishing faster and faster, literally every week as we speak”

You can just move a whole military base underground in weeks?

Can someone who knows more than I do explain why the military plan of "bomb active construction sites on the bases you're at war with" isn't a viable strategy for Iran here? I'm sure it shouldn't be because there would be no reason to even pretend to implement a plan that stupid.

You can hire no bid contractors who will tell you it can be done in weeks at exorbitant cost, even though it definitely can't though and that's basically the same thing

Funniest thing they could do is hire the Saudi Binladin Group.

Is the US still a month away from running out of oil like Mango Mussolini said a few days ago? Or have they been able to get more oil? Can't really construct anything underground if you don't have oil to power construction equipment

[–] DasRav@hexbear.net 30 points 6 days ago

I am sure military contractors will get this done in record time and well under budget!

Pentagon official says that each branch of the US military will get their own super secret base that nobody will be allowed to shoot back at. They say they will be consulting military contractors from the 1980's who were responsible for such highly successful projects as GI Joe HQ, Thunderbird 5, and Castle Grayskull

I love not having healthcare* so that the shit country i live in can have the most expensive and least effective military empire imaginable just pissing away money and value in an exponentially increasing state intrinsically entwined with its own decline

*sorry i meant healthcare i can afford

Old news. Americans have been flying their planes into the ground for generations already. doggirl-smug

They just tried to land the planes at the underground bases than don't yet exist, it was not the planes fault, it was the timetravel fault!

Waiting for those underground runways.

Doctrine of underground aerial supremacy

Iran actually has 1 or 2 airbases "underground": the hangars & taxiways are situated inside mountain tunnels leading directly to a runway. There's cool footage of their F-4s parked in them & discussion of how basing Su-35s in a couple such centrally located mountain bases would go a long way towards denying hostile overflights.

Normal targeting of an airfield usually involves hitting aircraft parking spots & the intersections between taxiways & runways--the runway itself is very easy to repair, to such an extent that munitions specifically designed to attack airfields usually also scatter mines so the enemy can't simply drive a bulldozer up to the pothole you created & just fill it back in.

They're moving the Stargate from Cheyenne Mountain to Raven Rock.

Moving shit underground won't exactly help that much.... you have to bring stuff topside to use it. Sure they can't just willy nilly blow your shit up at any time, but they can certainly watch and wait until you bring it outside to use it.

"Listen, they have extended their reach way too much, they are losing their advantage, now we only wait for Steiner to attack..."

The Americans have once again forgotten to add Kurt Angle to the mix. Their chances of winning drastic go down.

300 million dollar for a hardened bunker for the equivalent of a parking garage with mold.

[–] test_@hexbear.net 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

doesn't the MoU stipulate that US forces are to leave the region? The timeline for that seems shorter than the timeline to dig all these underground bases that, during construction, would be easy to blow up with missiles.

If I remember right it did yes

[–] red_giant@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

Regular moleman W

How are they going to fortify those bases?.. With the composite ultra strong engineered concrete... That Iran has a near monopoly on and has the secret sauce to the most advanced stuff that survives US bunker busters!!!
