I've been hearing how much this guy sucks for years and years now - why do the good folk of Canada not simply get rid of him?

[–] CMDR_Horn@lemmy.world 34 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Probably the same reason Americans can't get rid of Trump

[–] Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Cult-like devotion to right wing populism with complicit oligarch-controlled media? Does eems like it's a problem everywhere, to varying degrees 'cor

I genuinely wonder how much of modern politics is due to all the lead in gasoline up until the 90s

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

For what it's worth, it's the same oligarchs

Voter turnout was less than 50% both times, and here in Canada we have a HUGE political ignorance problem. Way too many people here are completely disengaged from politics and it’s entirely their fault, too.

Conservatives vote for him because they are stupid as hell. He’s massively, overtly corrupt but he wears blue so they vote for him.

He was elected provincially, only Ontario gets to decide.

The other main party, the Liberal party, was lead by a wet paper towel that had some fairly weak stances on some subjects that people didn't like.

There is a 3rd main party, the NDP, that had been elected about 30 years ago during a financial crisis, and because of their performance, the people around at the time have vowed to never vote for them again.

Combine that with our First-Past-The-Post voting system, which translates 40%, 25%, and 25% of the votes for each party (Conservative, Liberal, NDP) to 70%, 25%, and 5% of the power for each party (Conservative, NDP, Liberal). There is also the Green party which makes up for the remaining percentages.

I think all of the above is stupid and wish it were better.

First around the post really is a major problem in Canada, federally it benefits the Liberals and to a slightly lesser degree, the Conservatives, so neither will ever get rid of it. Gotta love a system where 35% = a majority.

But also don't forget Ford's popularity also came with the promise of $1 beer.

[–] Yttra@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Buck-a-beer (low adoption and discontinued, nobody could afford to make beer that cheap), free license plate stickers (costs the province 1.1B per year to waive that fee), and tough on Trump! (he folds on that last one every time the US threatens another national tariff)

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Look at the charismatic chucklefuck he is. He also has a superpower - he's a politician who can say sorry. He does some corruption or outright stupid shit for a few billion, says sorry, dials it back and we're back in love with him. It's the Onterrible way.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

As a Canadian I have no clue why not. The guy is a crackhead "lite" version of america's Mangolini with the charisma of a used car salesman. Somehow there's still enough idiots in this country that can sniff out and vote for fellow morons.

Bobby Broccoli recently did a whole series on how his brother came to power and what the dynamics at play are. It’s like 5 hours long, but worth a watch if you’re interested: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAB-wWbHL7VvVT1LbcOIkqkowoZry6Rfd

[–] AccoSpoot1@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Why do y'all keep voting for the fucken Fords?

[–] guyoverthere123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I live in Ontario.

In the last provincial election, ~60% of the eligible voters didn't vote.

Of those who did vote, half voted for a Conservative, and we've had Doug Ford for the past eight years.

[–] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 2 points 2 months ago

Bigger question is why don't more ppl vote. Election turnouts are going down (by policy aka systematic or by choice aka disillusionment)

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 months ago

Im not even canadian but ive heard enough

HE CAN EAT MY DICK

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ford Nation? More like Car Nation.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Ford F-150 Nation

(Best selling vehicle in canada)

[–] johsny@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Good way to do a bit of population control.

People want to speed and get away with it. Democracy is a device that ensures we will be governed no better than we deserve

[–] Mpatch@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Fyck ford, regardless I see nothing wrong here. It's a 10kmph increase on a road way where 120-140 is the normal

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago

These two guys crack me up, well the other one I just know by crack anyway

[–] hakase@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Shame about the bike lanes, but I fully support raising (highway) speed limits and banning speed cameras.

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Why? Speed cameras are just speed bumbs to knock people down from unsafe speeds at critical sections usually.

I have to hand it to Ford, he oozes charisma. He presents such a bad idea in a casual and enthusiastic manner; even convincing himself. He could sell shit sandwich and make everyone eat it for free. I can kinda see now why many people are easily pulled by populists.

[–] akilou@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

I mean, it's right there in his name

[–] dan69@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I’m glad it was just a magnet thing. Just like it will be lowered in less 8-13 months. Bc if I know dumb ppl in this modern day.. they too will use their mobile phones and will surely get into or commit β€œaccidents”

[–] CoolSouthpaw@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

He's always been a piece of shit though.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

62 mph for a highway that size seems slow I can’t imagine how slow it was before. You still need speed cameras but I don’t see a problem with 62 mph on a highway, in fact I’d be pissed it was so slow

[–] Teepo@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

62 (100km/h) was what it was before. It's being raised to 69 (110km/h).

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He sounds like Doug Dimmadome, owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome.

[–] vatlark@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

While Ford is objectively aweful, I don't hate this specific move. Sure, raise the speed limits on the highways to 120 or 130 if you want, but absolutely use speeding cameras to enforce it. Especially on local streets.

[–] akwd169@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Hes raising it from 100 to 110

Its a nothing burger. Useless political stunt, posturing, hes a fuckin meat head desperate to stay in office

[–] sixpaque@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

population control

[–] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

He's raising the speed limit from 62mph to 68 mph lmao what a worthless fucking difference
